2019 Headliners

I don't think The Cure is that bad of a choice at all. I think a lot of people on here underrate them. One of the most important alternative bands, very influential. Popular with many generations; you've got the older folks that grew up with them and there are plenty of young fans too. Hell, I know a lot of people that got into them as teens in the noughties; usually their path of music discovery started with modern indie, and then progressed onto The Smiths, The Cure, etc. Pretty much everyone that cares about music knows The Cure.

Killers is a bit boring though. I like them but they've played so much in the past few years, feel like everyone that wants to see them has probably done so already

I was talking specifically about in the run up to the festival tbf.  A quick wiki check suggests that KOL's third album shifted 900k copies in the UK, which looks to be around the same as Stormzy, The Cure and The Killers new albums have sold in the last 10 years combined.

Its difficult to get exact figures, and is a wee bit harsh on Stormzy as its accepted that he is being pushed forward by the festival.  The Killers in 2019 are what the Verve were in 2008.  Except the Verve had the cache of being reformed.

Who buys albums these days though?

The Killers - 12,679,004 monthly listeners on Spotify. 320,655 in London.

KOL - 8,392,611 monthly listeners. 217,154 in London.

In comparison...

Stormzy - 2,879,123 monthly listeners. 233,500 in London.

The Cure - 6,970,609 monthly listeners. 156,698 in London.

I'm not saying its any barometer of quality.  More an observation about the perceived 'size' of the headliners.  Over the last few years, whether you like their output or not, the likes of Coldplay, Kanye, Adele and Sheeran were megastars and amongst the biggest acts in the world when they headlined.

It was just an observation!

Bugger. Had money on Madonna and Gaga.

Fairly uninspired by the prospect of Stormzy, Killers, Cure though will prob go Killers for the craic.

And certainly don’t think those are TV friendly choices. They each have a few TV friendly songs, but a Madge or a Gaga or a proper classic rock act would be far more TV friendly all round. So not hugely sure those arguments stack up.

But as someone said, once inside the gates won’t give a slightest fuck who’s headlining ?‍♂️

Self confessing I spend quite a lot of time throughout the week here checking to see any further updates on who it’s going to be headlining the pyramid, as well as other acts to be confirmed for the festival. The anticipation is fun, and if nothing else it’s a laugh coming on here, but at the end of the day for me it absolutely has no bearing on my time at Glastonbury who plays what stage and at what time. I could go every year and not see a single act and would have the time of my life. It’s nice to have headliners and acts you’re raring to see, but when it’s all said and done, it means shit all who is or isn’t playing the fez. Count yourself lucky you’ve got a ticket for those who have as there are thousands without who couldn’t give a shit who was playing.

It’s a privilege to rock up to the festival every June, the acts themselves are just an added bonus.

Kings of Leon in the 10 years prior to that have sold several times more than the Killers have in the last 10 now (unless they've made up a monumental gap with sales of old albums). They've also sold more the Killers in the UK in their careers overall, if you're interested. Those 2008 headliners were a pretty big deal at the time, the end of the Verve and the decline in popularity (and output) of KoL and Jay-Z just makes it look much weaker than it was.

KOL was a lot of fucking fun that night. The vibe in the field for JayZ was unique in my Glasters going experience and the Verve was an under appreciated belter.

Despite the line-up looking weak, 2008 was a great festival. Maybe it was because of how slowly the tickets sold. But some great atmospheres.

    • Orbital opening the Other stage is a bold choice!
    • Great start for them
    • Thanks so much - that's very helpful. Someone else mentioned getting a train from Loughborough to East Midlands Parkway, and then a festival shuttle from there to the site. I think they were then going to come back on the Skylink Derby to Loughborough - I assume this is because the trains don't run as late as the Skylink, otherwise they would just come back the same way they came?! Is the transport hub a long way from the main stage? Just wondering what time I would need to leave Linkin Park to be sure of getting a shuttle. As I say, I am sure it will all be clear on the day, even after a few beers! Just hope the rain stays away...
    • I really don't think they would put Olivia Rodrigo on Occident stage. If it was her, they would put her in earlier Mordor slot and move Big Thief or Little Simz to Occident.   Fontaines DC are more probable, but don't really match the hype. However, again, if the hype was real, the artist would end up in Mordor.   That being said, I would love to see Fontaines DC tonight.
    • After all the good advice on here I had a nice visit to the site earlier in the week.    Walked down from Pilton village to Hitchen Hill and down the footpath to the Wood by Woodies.    Really strange seeing the site empty of 100,000 people. There is far more hedges and woodland on the site than you remember when the festival is on. Can see the stone circle and some structures still up on site. And looks like Worthy View has some camping going on there during the summer too.   Lots was fenced off with electric fencing to help wth the cattle grazing. Is really amazing how they set up the site as its hard enough accessing the area by car and foot nevermind all the kit needed to set the festival up. As others said you can't walk the whole site but nice to see the site again after a few years away   Pilton is also a lovely village with a nice village hall shop and post office attached, and got to speak to some locals who told me a few tales of past festivals down the years. One house for sale there would be lovely to live in - if only I had £2 million going spare
