we went into Wellington last night and it was clear that the numbers and mood was so much more than when we went in 2018. Even here where the limitations and impact has been so reduced it certainly makes people realise they need to get out and enjoy things when they can. I can only imagine what the party will be like next year for most of the world. People will have learned to appreciate and grab every chance they can.

Very impressive and yet reminds me:

- the clapping for the NHS is ultimately a superficial act, especially when there is nothing to stop us from properly investing into the NHS instead so that we can cope better. Billions have been found this year, the money was always there

- the best way to show a sense of community for which we can be proud is to respect the rules (and even exceed them) and we're clearly not doing this in sufficient numbers as we have the third highest number of cases in the world. I see lax attitudes in the UK compared to other countries I spent time in in 2020.

I have seen articles that apparently the new British strain has been found in China.

Would like some input from someone who may know better. But the only way I can think of how this variant continues to spread, is if this version is stickier and sticks to surfaces. If people aren’t moving around the world anymore what is? Goods. Cargo. Food. Anything but people being transported around.

Is there any argument that this new variant lives on surfaces longer, so it is spreading around the world through goods which people handle? Please someone with a more scientific insight can you tell me if I’m completely barking up the wrong tree here!

It's an interesting observation, as I do feel a lot of Britain has lost it's sense of community. The neoliberalism and libertarian attitudes have really crept it. I actually think a lot of divides have been created in society as a result of the pandemic, so it's not just the physical health impact it's had. It has put a spotlight on a lot of selfish pricks amongst us, who I used to think were in the minority.

Last time New Zealand had an outbreak, it was via international freight for memory - so there it is likely this will be moving on surfaces even easier.

Overwhelming cause of infection is through airborne droplets though, I can’t see a change that would make it so much more infectious being related to surfaces.

How is that determined with the new variant though? As it seems to be getting picked up in various places and harder to trace where it came from?

62% of Scottish people voted to keep the status quo and opinion polls have never showed a Scottish majority preferring to exit.

I don’t know, but with what we know about the virus I would’ve thought it would take quite a significant change for it to suddenly start spreading far more readily from surfaces.

I thought what made it so contagious in the first place was it’s ‘spikiness’ and how easy it latches on, so would assume it’s to do with that.

The other thing to bear in mind is surveillance, we just happened to pick it first but it’s not to say it wasn’t already all over the world anyway.
