The other thing to bear in mind is surveillance, we just happened to pick it first but it’s not to say it wasn’t already all over the world anyway.

Suspect this is behind the truth of it.

I don’t know, but with what we know about the virus I would’ve thought it would take quite a significant change for it to suddenly start spreading far more readily from surfaces.

I thought what made it so contagious in the first place was it’s ‘spikiness’ and how easy it latches on, so would assume it’s to do with that.

The other thing to bear in mind is surveillance, we just happened to pick it first but it’s not to say it wasn’t already all over the world anyway.

Yeah I agree, first to point out doesn’t necessarily mean it came from here.

And no that is not a defence to people calling it the British variant 😛

It's an interesting observation, as I do feel a lot of Britain has lost it's sense of community. The neoliberalism and libertarian attitudes have really crept it. I actually think a lot of divides have been created in society as a result of the pandemic, so it's not just the physical health impact it's had. It has put a spotlight on a lot of selfish pricks amongst us, who I used to think were in the minority.

Humans are inherently “selfish”. We are biologically wired to live in small groups and look out for the members of those groups to the detriment of people in other groups and different species.

Japan are surprisingly anti vax. Half said they won't take the covid vaccine in the last poll I saw

True - think this is linked to past scandals when the vaccines turned out to be ineffective.

But nonetheless it's a society that by far prioritises the wellbeing of the community over the individual.

maybe, but elsewhere not seeing rapid rise in cases like we are...?

Does that imply its an environmental e.g. behaviours of people as opposed to the virus itself which are causing the huge increase in London and South East because other countries aren't seeing the extreme rises we are linked to the new variant?

Has the new variant just become a scape goat?

maybe, but scientific consensus is it's the new variant.

That suggests that re-infection is incredibly rare.

The briefing outlines measured reinfection rates ranging from 0.1% to 0.9%. Other groups e.g. Imperial, suggest reinfections rates could be as high as 10%. Clinical staff working in a covid rich environment are also more likely to be reinfected. ......It is time you apologised for calling me a liar and show respect to those putting their lives at risk whilst trying to save the lives of others.

Don't exercise heavily after catching Covid

I’m not sure about that, I support a championship football team and at least three of the players seem to get it every single week, and it seems to be the same across the rest of the league (loads of games cancelled recently due to too many Covid cases) They’re out for a week or so and straight back in the team.

I’d argue that like everything it’ll affect everyone in different ways.  I had a positive test a month ago now and even when I walk upstairs I’m out of breath (granted not the fittest but did used to walk about 3 miles a day to and from work).  Lascelles and Saint-Maximum from Newcastle have apparently struggled to recover from their bouts of it.  Whereas others like you’ve said have been out and back in a week or 2 (Salah was one).

Think what’s clear is it’s a horrible disease and we can’t predict how any one of us would feel with and after it.

maybe just depends on how bad you get it, some people take longer to recover due to trying to do too much too soon.

Well said, but most of his posts are trolling for attention so I would probably try to ignore him if I were you. Not really worth your time. Thanks for all you do.

Questioning assertions made about Covid isn't showing disrespect, it's just trying to make sense of this situation, your claim may be true but then it may not, that doesn't make you a "liar" just not fully aware of how this is playing out.

"Clinical staff working in a covid rich environment are also more likely to be reinfected." Are they? or are they more likely to have developed immunity to it? Your claim isn't (yet) scientifically proven so questioning it is perfectly fair. BTW saying that these reinfections have been confirmed by a PCR test means nothing, the PCR could be picking up fragments of the first infection, it is not reliable enough. I know it's been hard for medical staff throughout this and it's understandable if you are a bit oversensitive to any criticism/questioning but no one on here it being deliberately disrespectful we just want to try to understand what's going on.

    • Maybe you need a groovy mayor who can get you the money.   Anyway, looks like mayors going to get a whole load of fiscal devolution and greater powers...so best everyone gets one, a decent one, and get a load of Madchesterism.

    • Another great weekend with family and friends.  We spend most of our time between Obelisk, and second stage due to having young children.  Overpass, Florence Road, Nathan Evans, David Byrne and Alex James were the highlights for me.  Quite enjoyed a dance to Gok Wan on the Saturday too.   Certainly feeling the Latitude blues this week and looking forward to next year.   Also looking forward to all the predictions for next year in the 2027 chat.   Hope everyone had a great festival.
    • How much is Burnham's success down to Manchester getting a shitton of investment for public transport infrastructure?   There's no doubt he did the work, but the money dumped into Manchester for him to achieve that was huge - the most of any infrastructure project outside London ever. Did that need a mayor, or just the money?
