We went from tier 2 to 4 on NYE. Christmas was quieter than usual, a lot of places were closed, including us from the 21st. There were definitely still a few tourists around though. Then, on the Bank Holiday Monday (28th?) It went crazy. The weather was good and people were still off work. Car parks were full, roads were busy as were popular walks. Would guess mostly day trippers based on when the roads were busy. Busier than last half term. Then tier 4 came in and it was like a tap had been turned off.  Weather was still good but hardly anyone about. Hard to say if it's got quieter since the shift to lockdown. Maybe a little

He’s a real humble guy. While the government were off having a Christmas break, he dusted off his scrubs and went to work on the covid wards.

It's not just about death rates/numbers though. Got sent this by a ICU consultant mate to show that it's the ICU admission rates which are key. Really easy to become overwhelmed.

Compared to 'flu' and viral pneumonia - 2017-2019 figures show a total of 5782 ICU admissions for viral pneumonia (yearly average of 1927) .

 Covid 19 first and second waves up until now, so under one year, equal 21,084 ICU admissions. Add to that increased isolation and specialist treatment needed, this stretches resources further and  increasingly better treatment  has slowed the death rate, but often means longer stays in ICU

There's normally about 4100 ICU beds in the UK. So they have to adequately control the spread and that is as key a metric as reducing the death rate.

That’s incredibly bleak. I really worry about the well-being of the staff on ICU and in hospitals. There’s a possibility that there’s going to be a lot of traumatised people left in the wake of this, when the pandemic finally dies down. I hope that the staff get the support they need afterwards.

Admitted to hospital with non-covid a week ago.

No vaccination offered.

Tested 3 times since admission.

Positive test today.

Currently asymptomatic.

20% of deaths are from hospital acquired covid.

Fingers firmly crossed.😞
