The Co-Op at Glastonbury

One of The first cooperative society was set up in the village of Fenwick Ayrshire in the 18th century. Local weavers were struggling to buy food so they organised and sacks of oatmeal purchased and sold to the families without profit. They became the fenwick weavers  cooperative society. Others followed elsewhere. Right up until the 60s the coop provided families with food clothing etc at competitive prices and families could earn a dividend every quarter. Many older folk can still remember their co membership number that had to be quoted at every purchase.

times have changed but the co-op is an important part of the socialist history of the country.

Think the co-op shops that I've seen at other festivals have been brilliant. Lots of stuff to buy, including booze and fags and all at a reasonable price. Option to pay with card as well was excellent. Plus the DJ set in the co-op? Good to see the G is following suit with other festivals.

They had a pop up shop at latitide last year, there were random dance parties in the pot noodle aisle and the cashiers were formation dancing ...... and they didn;t stock hot chocolate ?

was it open 24 hours?

i can see strategic visits trying to time it when the beer has had the longest in the fridge.

More things to plan!

It looks like they did chilled ready meals at latitude,, now all I need to know is what size battery do you need for a microwave in a tent.

2x12v 180ah's along with a 6ftx3ft 120w solar panel plus regulator all connected to a 1200w or larger invertor unless your microwave is 12v rather than 240v.

You did ask!

Don't know about the other festivals, but at Latitude I'm pretty sure it was like 7am to 3am. I'd imagine that could vary a bit by what demand they think they're going to get at a specific festival / pitch.

We had a village planning meeting about this. Basically Michael and others want a shop in the village. Our last one closed some years ago. It couldn’t compete with the opening of Tesco’s in Shepton and sadly closed its doors.

the Coop said they would open one in our village hall building as long as they had a shop at the festival.

So Pilton residents get a shop at last.

Had a wee holiday in the village last June and noticed the lack of a local shop. Shame locals have to go to Tesco’s, especially the elderly or those without cars. It’s an issue in my area as well. Hopefully it will get the support of locals.

Co-op will open a pop-up convenience store at this year’s Glastonbury Festival.

The partnership, which builds on the success the retailer had at music festivals last year, will see a Co-op convenience shop built in the campsite area of the Somerset-based festival, which regularly welcomes 175,000 people.

The store will sell a wide range of food, drink and festival essentials like sandwiches, water, bacon, eggs and bread, alongside sun cream and rain ponchos.

Alongside the pop up store, Co-op has also submitted planning application for a new convenience store in the village of Pilton, adjacent to the festival site.

Amanda Jennings, director of marketing live and local at Co-op, said: “As the first national food retailer to work in this way with Glastonbury, we are developing exciting and unique plans together for the festival store. Equally, if the planning application is approved, opening a Co-op in Pilton would give us the opportunity to continue to serve the local community once the music has stopped and the tents have been packed away.”

Michael Eavis, Glastonbury founder, said: “When I was a small boy there were three shops in this village. My earliest memories of going to the shop were to buy one penny packets of sherbet! Since then, one by one, the shops have closed and for several years we’ve had no shops at all.

“But now, thankfully we’ve managed to persuade the Co-op people to make a pledge and commit to trying to provide our marvellous village with a model village shop. We’re so lucky and my enthusiasm is shared right across the village.”

Presumably they reckon they’ll make enough over glastonbury weekend to offset any loss they’ll incur by keeping a shop open in Pilton all year round. They must have big hopes for festival weekend.

I think I remember reading the Tesco in Reading makes more over that festival weekend than over Christmas and that isn't even on festival grounds so definitely think Coop will make a killing!

I think it will do very well, especially if selling cold booze, sandwiches/snacks and if they do hot food like sausage rolls, pies or pizza plus ice (can you imagine?!) they better have the staff to cover the demand tbh

The one at Latitiude was ipen whenever I went past, be that at midday or 3am, I'm not sure whether it was 24 hr but close enough I think

The one there was outside the main arena, near the campsites so didn;t take away from traders onsite, so not sure what the set up at Glastonbury will be - but certainly sold beer, wine and soft drinks at Latitude
