Whitty talking up the possibility of restrictions next winter. I’ll be glad of the day that he goes back to not being a household name.

Had enough of experts. Where have I heard that before?

I mean I’m not sure Whitty himself would disagree with what I said. I get the feeling he really doesn’t enjoy the publicity and is looking forward to it being over.

True. I'm sure he'd be much happier out of the limelight, or more importantly, nowhere this cluster f**** of a government response.

what are peoples perceptions on how this lockdown is compared with other restrictions we have had previously ....? it sees like it is quieter than tier 4 ..... but nothing like as quiet as the National lockdown in March .... hopefully Boris has some very strong words in tonights press conference  and people take notice .... a few police pull overs of essential journeys would definately help too ..... from a perception point of view ... its amazing how word of mouth and social media talk get a message out ......

We went from tier 2 to 4 on NYE. Christmas was quieter than usual, a lot of places were closed, including us from the 21st. There were definitely still a few tourists around though. Then, on the Bank Holiday Monday (28th?) It went crazy. The weather was good and people were still off work. Car parks were full, roads were busy as were popular walks. Would guess mostly day trippers based on when the roads were busy. Busier than last half term. Then tier 4 came in and it was like a tap had been turned off.  Weather was still good but hardly anyone about. Hard to say if it's got quieter since the shift to lockdown. Maybe a little

He’s a real humble guy. While the government were off having a Christmas break, he dusted off his scrubs and went to work on the covid wards.

Yeah pretty much, he said there should be a gradual relaxation of restrictions with the possibility of small levels of restrictions next winter.

I believe the seasonal flue is around 5-6k per year. So around that figure I guess would be considered ‘acceptable’.

It's not just about death rates/numbers though. Got sent this by a ICU consultant mate to show that it's the ICU admission rates which are key. Really easy to become overwhelmed.

I don't get much involved in the medical stuff so have also attached the relevant document, with a huge amount of information. The numbers however, don't lie.

Compared to 'flu' and viral pneumonia - 2017-2019 figures show a total of 5782 ICU admissions for viral pneumonia (yearly average of 1927) .

Covid 19 first and second waves up until now, so under one year, equal 21,084 ICU admissions. Add to that increased isolation and specialist treatment needed, this stretches resources further and  increasingly better treatment  has slowed the death rate, but often means longer stays in ICU

There's normally about 4100 ICU beds in the UK. So they have to adequately control the spread and that is as key a metric as reducing the death rate.

Guess they should get more beds for next winter.

Inside St Georges Hospital. Brutal video. All the anti-lockdown twats should be forced to watch it.

That’s incredibly bleak. I really worry about the well-being of the staff on ICU and in hospitals. There’s a possibility that there’s going to be a lot of traumatised people left in the wake of this, when the pandemic finally dies down. I hope that the staff get the support they need afterwards.

A very sobering watch.

Their sacrifice: battle to save the lives of dying patients on 12 hour shifts and wear full PPE round the clock.

Ask of us: wear a bit of cloth when you're in tesco, stop socialising for a bit and watch more netflix

Yeah it's fucking ridiculous really when you put it like that.

Really hits home when you see it like that.

    • Proper special gig tonight. They won't mean much to most people, but The Dogs D'Amour were one of the most significant bands of my youth.   Tyla, yer main man of said band, was playing in Birkenhead tonight. Not many there, but it was going fine. Then he decided he didn't like the smoke and the flashing lights so suggested moving the gig to the beer garden. Off we all went, and it was magical. Like having your favourite musician play in your garden. I absolutely loved it.   Before:     After:
