What is the efficacy for AZ? I’m thinking it’s somewhere between 60-70%, whereas biontech is 95%?

62% with the standard dose, the only dose tested in over 55s.

90% with half dose/full dose though, we just need proper data on it. It could be amazing, we just don't yet know, frustratingly.

62% effective at preventing symptomatic infection doesn’t sound great from the headline but the key point is that it’s very very effective at preventing severe illness/death. Not a single person who received the vaccine was hospitalised after testing positive.

Far better sterilising effect with the good dose. Sorry, I can't remember where I saw that, possibly in Nature or maybe Prof. 🦆's analysis on here.

But yeah, no serious disease at all is great news.

Seriously, some people think sturgeon should resign for being pictured at a wake without a mask? At work I have to wear a mask at all times, apart from if I'm eating or drinking. If I'm having a cup of tea and my boss walks past, she doesn't sack me for not wearing a mask. Grow up.

And for the record, I am no fan of sturgeon.

How has it gone in Liverpool?  I see the infection rates have dropped in Liverpool and Sefton. How much is it due to mass testing?   Or lockdown?  My father in law is in Sefton and many of our close friends are the Merseyside area.

Unfortunately not sure - username is no longer accurate! So impressed with how quickly their numbers came down though

That’s ultimately the aim of the vaccine tbh. Any full sterilising immunity that gives us a herd immunity position would be a bonus, but if we get a vaccine that transforms covid from a genuinely life threatening illness to something that can be managed with regular lemsips and a week in bed, then that’s a very big win.

Tier 4 spreading almost as quick as the new variant:

I saw earlier it could be as soon as Boxing Day for the Birmingham area, they doubt they move them sooner.

Yeah, LD:SD reduced transmission by 58%, SD:SD was only a 3% reduction in asymptomatic cases (pretty wide confidence intervals on those though, hence they are calling it an indication that transmission is reduced). It’s in their Lancet paper. I’d be surprised if the others don’t have some impact on transmission though, given symptomatic disease does correlate with viral load, just not likely to be sterilising immunity a la the measles vaccine.

Once Christmas shopping is over I wouldn't be surprised if the whole country moves up a tier.

We’re more or less shutting down on Christmas Eve at 3pm. Some shops can open after Christmas, but pubs/restaurants gone til at least 12th January. No inter-county travel after the 26th, household visits down to 1 other household from the 26th and none at all from January 1st. Cases gone crazy this week (though from what I see around me, I’m not surprised, looks like everyone all of a sudden forgot we weren’t out of this yet!)...

Have to say I'm glad the shops are open late, have been doing bits of food shopping after 8pm to avoid crowds. Some of the shelves are empty so I think they'll have been busy!

One last trip to find a pig in a blanket tomorrow and some Bailey's. Not sure which takes priority....

Tony Blair says we should use the two dose vaccine as one dose and vaccinate as many people as possible.... also vaccines passport are a good idea we should use.

Hahaha true to form, that self serving clown gagging to get his dose before the oldies have their second one.

I do agree for what its worth but where Tony Blair is concerned its always worth asking why he pops his gross, hideous, war criminal head above the parapet When he does. The answer is always self interest. I wonder if he’s ever been formally diagnosed a narcissist or a sociopath because thats all he is.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/dec/22/worlds-media-ask-how-it-went-so-wrong-for-plague-island-britain-covid

Quote

The Sydney Morning Herald had a brutal answer. Britain’s response to the pandemic had been “mired in inaction, plagued by failures of the state to mobilise and Johnson’s own destructive habit of promising false dawns simply because he cannot stand to be the bearer of bad news,” it said.

Time after time, Johnson has “promised a ‘return to normal’ before the British state was able to deliver. Instead, Booster Boris has delivered up a busted flush. Britons have extra cause to feel cheated. They have been whispered fantasies by a prime minister who thinks optimism is a substitute for hard truths and a clear, consistent management plan.”

Savage.

Some empty shelves is standard fare this time of year ... you simply can’t fill the shelves quick enough .... no signs of supply issues as yet .... but it will start to happen Boxing Day onwards ... just hope there are enough raw materials and backup in the pipeline for longer shelf life products

Oh now I'm really angry. The scum making political digs for reasons that are irrelevant to the real world.  I didn't vote for SNP and I am fully aware that Nicola is milking the situation for all she can.  BUT I think she is doing the right thing for the country.  There I've said it go argue..

I don't like The Sun but I don't see how you can say it's irrelevant. She makes the rules,  she had ensured Scotland has been under stricter restrictions than England for most of the pandemic yet in terms of deaths we've been pretty similar so the main effect of these restrictions has been to make a political dufference so she can push for another decisive referendum during a huge recession. She broke those rules and she got caught and the public have every right to know. I don't think she should resign but she rightly has had to apologise and it is right that it should dent her "Saint Nicola" image.

Alas, it looks like a press conference could be on the cards later today..

Robert Jenrick on Sky news just now:

'We won't hesitate'

The government's COVID operations committee is meeting today to discuss the new variant of the coronavirus.

Mr Jenrick adds the mutation is prevalent in "most regions of the country" and "it may be necessary to take further action."

Asked if the guidance could change over Christmas, the housing secretary said “If we need to do that we won’t hesitate to do so”.

The guidance could change over Christmas? Surely they won't ban everyone else from seeing each other even on Christmas Day? No way that would be followed at this point and people will lose their shit.

Imagine this will end up being the Birmingham/Midlands tier announcement. Having said that though, I guess that would effectively change Christmas plans for anyone moving to tier 4.

To be honest, he was so vague that it could be certain areas only or it could be the whole country, although like u say that would not go down well with only 2 days to go until Christmas.
