I'm not suggesting Florence isn't worthy or would be a poor headliner, but in terms of the criteria above, others are worthier, if it came down to a choice. There are better acts who would headline that stage, shirley we can agree on that.

Possibly, but don't call me Shirley.

On some news outlets he's being touted as the UK's biggest dj, Zane. Really?

If we're talking radio djs (rather than live performing artists) and amongst young people, at any one time the radio 1 breakfast show host probably is but the slot lowe had is probably 2nd... and in terms of musical influence arguably bigger (regardless of how annoying they might be).

(Referring to my suggestion that Kylie, Madonna or Taylor Swift would be worthier headliners than Florence).

I'd go with: longevity, success, status and popularity. I'd also throw in quality, but that's more subjective.

EDIT: Just to say, by using the word 'worthy', I appear to have rattled one or two cages and I'm not sure why. The Pyramid is a hallowed stage and whether you use the term worthy, or deserved, or justified, all I'm referring to is that there's a hierarchy of stages for a reason and reason why some don't get to play there. I'm not suggesting Florence isn't worthy or would be a poor headliner, but in terms of the criteria above, others are worthier, if it came down to a choice. That just goes to show what utter bollocks deeming a headliner as 'worthy' is. If we just went on that, we'd have absolutely terrible headliners every year of outdated acts flogging their latest greatest hits.

Also why are Florence and the Machine having to be judged for a spot directly against Madonna, Kylie and Taylor Swift? They're all female fronted acts but Florence and the Machine are marketed differently, have a different sound and are just a different act - all of which puts them at a disadvantage but they still manage to outsell Taylor Swift.

Said the same in the TITP section. Why, when a female act is rumoured, are they then compared to other female acts who could fill the slot, rather than other acts of the same genre, who actually sound relatively similar?

Of course, it's because her being female is more important than the music she makes.

Agreed. If he's articulated one thing, it's that russy's biggest love is of his own voice.

Because there are three headline slots to fill (two if we accept Coldplay really are TBC, which I don't) and more than three artists potentially competing for it. I don't see that they're all female is relevant, although Glasto hasn't traditionally reflected gender diversity in much the same way it's failed to properly reflect musical diversity. But when we're talking about two or three slots, of course everyone in contention is going to be compared against each other.

Probably. There's a reason he gets the first play of almost every hit record going and gets interviews with Kanye etc, people actively went out of their way to listen to his show. Annie doesn't have anything like the same gravitas, wouldn't be surprised if Reading etc give their announcements to Greg James now.

But why does she get compared against those three (two of which highly unlikely to headline anyway) specifically, rather than all the other contenders, who happen to be blokes?

It's only me who raised the comparison, for no better reason than those were the people in my mind at the time.

At this point, it could really be anybody, but I'd like to see at least one strong female headliner this year, whether that's Swift, Florence, Kate Bush or anyone of that ilk.

    • Pretty much all festivals lose out on major artists because of production limitations though. Glastonbury is no different to most other festivals.  Lots of acts can/will adapt their tour production to suit festival stages if they want to play them, but some acts with stage designs and routines just don't want to adapt, and would rather just stick with a rigid, well-rehearsed production and take the money for their own gigs, whether that's a lot more than playing Glastonbury, or slightly less than playing some other festivals (but with added complications). Trying to adapt the stage, layout, access to b-stages etc to accommodate a single headliner on a Friday and then having to change it all around for a Saturday headliner isn't really a goer when most headliners can just easily adapt their show to stay on a main stage, if they're so inclined. They have a year to figure out how to perform a song on a main stage and ditch a few dance routines out on a b-stage if they really put their mind to it. It's not that difficult......
