I'm not sure he seems out of his depth in terms of competency, I just think he comes across as very nasty and interested in picking fights. Starmer does seem to trust him and he's got a senior role in both the campaign team and whips. I think he's probably best off left there where he's mostly out of the public eye and media attention.
One thing to remember with earlies is that all 3 shifts are the same. Fine if you get morning shift, great if you get the afternoon/evening shift. Can be a bit sh*t if it's nights. A friend got nights a couple of years back. She did feel like she was starting the festival off on the back foot, and did struggle a bit. Doesn't help that you are trying to sleep during probably two of the noisiest days in the Oxfield.
Can't remember exactly but I think I remember her saying she was glad she'd done it but that she probably wouldn't want to do it again.
