Spain and Portugal are ok at moment...France, Poland, Scandinavia definitely not...and Italy and Germany not looking good either.

Yeah, that's a fair assessment.

But there's no reason to think these recent mini spikes can't be quickly reversed and then cases can plateau again, as they seem to be in the UK.

It’s a fair assumption a big chunk of those cases are from other NHS workers.

Yeah, but if 1 worker harasses 20 of their colleagues there are gonna be a lot more victims than perps.

I also wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the perps were patients.

And if I really wanted to play devil's advocate, I'd suggest there's a possibility that some of these cases might have even been perpetrated by the met police...

But when did it last actually work or do anything apart from make those protesting feel better that they did all they could before the inevitable? Extinction rebellion pissed off way more people than they converted to their cause.

Allowing protest does keep up the illusion that we live in a free country and society I guess. Its just different from the oppressive regimes of the past.

The people have no power, and never will again

Well, unless they actually storm parliament and take over...no. But they do have an impact. Poll tax riots were part of the end story for Thatcher. Iraq war protest did not stop parliament agreeing to invade Iraq, but helped to reshape future policy on intervention in middle east, syria etc (which I actually think was wrong), extinction rebellion and school strike protests have definitely brought to the forefront the urgency of climate warming, and blacklivesmatter protests have changed the conversation on racism in this country. They do make a difference, and they are important as fuck.

hopefully, you have to act quick though...which means more strict lockdowns, and people are sick of it and getting angry.

Yes, the B117 has already already become the dominant here and whole Europe now. There are regional differences (Austria somewhere in the middle but as said we are opened up). This might explain why some regions are doing better that others (here in Austrias west the cases are that low that they could already do some small social distanced gigs). The SA-variant is not the problem as its under control. Its a race against the virus now, we had some time to prepare, but after the EU vaccination chaos we have lost that time. So, yes, some countries like France or Germany will go into Lockdown again, but hospitals are not on the brink at the moment, at least not now. But there is a cautious way of handling the situation at the moment as we are in the third wave, but this differs from country to country. We hope that it`s not an empty phrase from politics when being told that summer will be normal as by June nearly every adult should at least be vaccinated with the first dose, which will give us together with the vaccine passport a really good position, not expecting it to be absolutely normal like said from our politicians but travel, sports, events, hospitality should go ahead - it would be a catastrophe if not or totally restricted.

That makes sense. I'll fully admit I'm a champagne socialist and haven't got the balls to actually join a protest, i just think with social media and the even worse traditional media it's a battle that is unable to be won

Yeah in Spain today:

  • Bars, restaurants and shops: Open including inside restaurant dining.
  • Mobility: Can travel freely within your region.
  • Gatherings: Groups of up to six people
  • Outdoor sports: 50% capacity
  • Theatres, cinemas, concert halls, museums: 50% capacity

In summary, life feels pretty normal.

Reports of Europe's demise have been exaggerated...

Austria:
    •    Bars, restaurants, Hotels: Closed since November
Shops: Open for a few weeks now
    •    Mobility: Can travel freely except for some regions where cases are too high
    •    Gatherings: Allowed, but maybe restricted to a certain amount again
    •    Indoor and Outdoor Sports: allowed, but no spectators
    •    Theatres, cinemas, concert halls: Closed, Museums: Open for a few weeks now

but there are regional differences, Vorarlberg in the far west nearly everything is open allowed with some restrictions (maybe quite similar to spain).

last summer has been rather normal, now with restrictions not normal, but not that bad, but yes, reports exaggerated

Good news I think @Toilet Duck?

Yes, good news that post-vaccination we still see good neutralisation (at least in the lab) suggesting the vaccines will still suppress transmission of this variant to a reasonable extent. Also augurs well for the Brazil variant which is kind of like a hybrid of SA and Kent (and we already know the vaccines protect well against the UK variant). But the main worry in terms of changes in the receptor binding domain are shared between Brazil and SA, so this is a good sign. The reduction in antibodies doesn’t seem to have as much impact as feared, probably because the level of antibodies produced after vaccination is huge (on the one hand, there’s an argument we may be overdosing, but if it is providing protection against new variants too, then maybe not). The real proof will be actual clinical outcomes from real world use, but it’s definitely a good sign (and of course, other parts of our immune system are still pretty effective at staving off prolonged infection with all these variants).

The cases appear to be stabilising in Manchester. It looks like the case "rises" may well have been down to the increased testing as much as anything else.

The weekly figures look a bit worrying, but the daily numbers are starting to look encouraging. More boroughs showing (admittedly modest) daily drops now. R appears to be just underneath 1.

It'll still be good to get a few more people jabbed before doing anything like opening the pubs. We're getting there 🙂
