Because if he can get someone like Lisa Nandy to say she wouldn't book a foreign holiday now then it becomes a thing.  Then they get some representative of the travel industry - probably that gobshite from Ryanair - to come on and get all angry.  Then Simon Calder will come on, stood outside an airport or something, to earn his appearance fee.  Then the PM on Wednesday will throw it back at Starmer saying Labour want to cancel summer and claim his government is doing all it can to support the tourism industry.

And that's how content is made!

Spot on, that.

To a certain degree, but scientists and politicians also have to react to what is happening...so maybe christmas could have happened if a new more infectious variant hadn't started spreading throughout SE England etc. And now we'll have to see the state of things in the early summer on what sort of foreign travel is allowed.

We were all going crazy about the impending disaster caused by the lax restrictions in early winter before we knew about the Kent variant. And SAGE were calling for a firebreak earlier than that. The government fucked up big style.

Yep same here. We've booked to go to Japan for my 30th for the fall season this year. Leaning heavily towards "it won't happen", but it's fully refundable if we don't and we had a stonking deal on the flights and one of the hotels. Worth a punt.

Me too. Booked for September '20 then rescheduled for March '21, then rescheduled again for September '21. I have no idea if it will happen but it's six months away and if the last six months are anything to go by, I'm sure it's going to be a rollercoaster between now and then. I wouldn't be mad in moving it to October/November to be honest

This is exactly why the future wave fearmongering should be confined entirely to the travel industry. We are absolutely slaughtering every other developed nations when it comes to the vaccine programme, so we’ll avoid the feared summer wave whereas your France’s and Germany’s may still have high case numbers.

Of course, I’m still confused why we can’t allow vaccinated people to visit disease riddled areas given that the vaccines appear to reduce transmission as well as severe disease and that even bringing the virus back into a heavily vaccinated population doesn’t pose a material danger, but the answer will no doubt boil down to variant porn despite the fact that the vaccines work very well against all variants.

And to think, some people on here doubted they would even do a million per week! 😄

I don't think it was too unreasonable to have some scepticism given our government's record over the last year or so.

Thankfully the vaccinations are going well, because we've all witnessed in harrowing detail what happens when mistakes are made, and in Johnson's case, repeated.

Thanks for that, honest that's incredible and brought a small tear to think about how amazing everyone is doing to deliver that.

Thanks to everyone including those on here who are helping to achieve that 🥰

I'm not bigging up the shite government, far from it. I believe most of the credit goes to the scientists, the NHS workers, the volunteers who developed the vaccine and got it into so many arms so efficiently.

I've seen how they do it every year with the flu jabs, so I never expected any different for this.

yeah true...but I don't think it was expected to be as bad as it was...I certainly didn't think we'd see nearly 1.5k deaths per day.

Have we had any days since last March with zero covid deaths?

looked at some charts...as far as can see got down to single figures last August, but didn't actually any have any zero death days. Just thinking we may see some zero covid death days in the coming months..that would be good....

    • ^ and oh yes one of the other highlights for me was all the Red Kites hovering over the campsite all weekend. Amazing.
    • Ah the days before mobile phones when you held up a cigarette lighter for effect and the air was thick with some lovely smokes
    • With BST speculation slowly starting to creep into life, might as well start the engines.    If he opts to hit Europe again so soon, could see Springsteen doing this and London. A pleasing sense of circulaity may help play a part in persuasion there.
    • Know you can play fast and loose with wording, but think Williams is a Lytham exclusive.
    • First time for me, really enjoyed it. Nice venue, nice weather, good vibes, etc.   Notes on performances: CMAT's a great performer - seen her live twice now.  GANS are my favourite new act since Big Special, and live they're fantastic. Fellow Brummies too, so I'm all about that. The album's a bit disappointing though. Primal Scream were great, although I felt the crowd seemed a bit muted. The Libertines sounded knackered. Not sure they're suited to a festival. First time seeing The Royston Club, thought they were very good - the tent seemed to be full of kids on each others shoulders singing along. I'm all about that. First time seeing the K's, a bit disappointed. Didn't like his voice, and I felt like every song sounded the same as the last one. Sarajevo is a good tune, though. It still sounds like all the others, just a bit better.  The Maccabees and Two Door Cinema club were a but underwhelming, but Pelican by the Maccabees is a banger. It all sounded a bit Travis/Early Coldplay to me though. The Wombats took me by surprise - I expected 1 1/2 hours of 'Let's Dance to Joy Division' style indie-landfill, so I was surprised to hear that some of the rest of their stuff had dynamics and range. I still don't think they're any good, but I can't say they didn't surprise me either. Just not my thing.   Surprise of the weekend for me was Rizzle Kicks. Never listened to them before, but they got me out of my tent and into the arena as I was trying to nurse a hangover and I thought it was a blast.    Will probably go next year too.
