Alt-J seemed to be part of that critically beloved crop that loads of people touted as "the next big thing", only to peter out when it really mattered for reaching that next level.

I really liked them til I saw them live.  It wasn't that they were bad, as such, as they did a fine job of recreating their studio work on stage, it just felt lifeless and sterile.

im a massive fan myself those first two albums were both 10/10 the next two - perhaps not quite as good -  I think they have a niche sound that is always going to struggle crossing over to mainstream popularity. Think they perhaps peaked 10 or so years ago when they were headlining the other stage -

they will always have a strong loyal fanbase though and that will get them sold out tours in reasonable venues - but may not necessarily translate to good positions on festival line ups.

Unless they have a next album thats gonna blow the general listeners socks off - I can not see them picking up a slot as big as other headliner again.

Unless of course its a lengthy hiatus - as sometimes a long absence can give a band a big boost.

Can not beleive its been 13 years since they won the Mercury prize!!!!!

Agreed.

Saw them 3 times in 2015, including the Glasto set before (after?) Lionel, which was a biblical couple of hours.

Astonishing MD helped. Though I hasten to add it wasnt the sole reason.

It definitely helps to let yourself melt into the sound that they make 😉

i've never been very fussed by alt j.

Maybe 8-9 years back two door were my favourite band and they had alt j as their most similar artist on spotify, tried them tons and never got it! Always found that very strange

I missed both the Alt J stage headlining slots - for the Pyramid headliners - surprising for me

Did catch them once on the other stage 2013 in sunny afternoon run of them then Tame Impala & Foals that was absolutely cracking-   although a twinge of regret that i missed Frightened Rabbit to catch all of that.

Seen them o there own tour 4 or 5 times though consistently great show
