It definitely time everyone stopped pissing their pants about the vaccines not working until they know they aren’t going to work!

Wonder if that will make the front pages tomorrow, or pictures of a packed Soho inferring everyone there is irresponsible...

I should have linked this as this study specifically references B.1.617.2

Happy freakin days!

So it does seem that the vaccine escape side of this variant hysteria is completely unnecessary for now. Shame the damage is done and the majority think any new variant will put us back to square one

Just need to hear that it's not as transmissible as feared and then we're back on track

I guess it also fits a good narrative for a final vaccine push for those who are eligible, but haven’t taken it yet. If the threat of this ‘scares’ even 1% of those to indeed go and have the vaccine, then it’ll be worthwhile in the long run.

Simon Calder reported back from Portugal earlier. He said the PCR tests cost 4 times more than his flights and the paperwork was more complicated than travelling around old cold war Russia. He also said there were 24 no shows on his flight, so the above was obviously stopping a fair few people who had booked from travelling. It is 28 degrees there though apparently.

I'm not sure - I don't think you can reverse this fear as easily as people assume. There will be double vaccinated people who are terrified of going back out into society. I'm really against fear being used to control the population and I think some hidden harms are going to come out after this. There's more to life than just covid and vaccines and I think any damage done will outweigh the benefits of a small number getting the vaccine who wouldn't otherwise

I saw a tweet from a local authority that said "our team will find a reason to vaccinate you" on Saturday so it  sounds like everyone is pushing ahead regardless. Glad the government are behind them - seems illogical to go rigidly by age now in those areas - younger people will be heading back out more, for both work and socialising, and the age of those catching it is lower in Bolton

According to the BBC, in Glasgow people between the ages of 18 and 39 are being invited to get their vaccinations early because of the rise in the number of Covid cases in the city

Yes - my 24 year old niece reported this too - her mates are getting texts.   Unfortunately she didnt get the text as she is still registered with her home GP.  I think it is only for a few postcodes - not all of Glasgow though.

Hope the SAGE guys update their pessimistic models now...

I think that stat of 0.06% hospitalisations is important to dig into, as it shows both how brilliant the vaccines are.

The vaccines were never going to 100% successful at preventing serious disease as they were in the some of the trials. (And like @Zoo Music Girl mentioned - some are still being hospitalised after being jabbed, and that's always going to be the case).

0.06% is 1 in 1667. That's the chance of hospitalisation if infected after vaccination. It's a very small number - it means 2795 people out of the entire UK population. Which is low enough that we could actually deal with it even if everyone got sick the same week. And that means that transmission of the new variant doesn't actually matter - once the adult population is vaccinated we can let the exponential growth happen without damaging the NHS.

Was in Sale today at the Makers Market...

Interesting to see how many people still wearing face masks...  Easily around 50%...  Outside in the fresh air.

People need properly informing of the dangers and the fact masks do nothing outside.

I broadly agree with you with masks just out and about outside, but in a market situation there's often noise, you're having to speak loudly to people you're buying stuff from - I can sort of see benefits there?

One thing that I hope has become apparent to people during this pandemic is that science isn't black and white, its an array of competing views constantly shifting as new evidence emerges. It also has a very human side where prejudices and attitude to risk play a big part.

Science is cool.

And the science as to what prevents spread has to be balanced against the science of what people will actually do under certain restrictions. The scientific advice if it were possible to guarantee 100% compliance with any rules would have been very different (and, depressingly, a lot lighter and easier to deal with).

NHS website is taking 37 year olds for bookings now (covering page still hasn’t changed). Maybe even younger but that’s the only one I’ve tried.

It was speculative admittedly but followed your prompt and it's not letting 32yr old me book yet.

sob.

BBC suggesting still a fair amount of hesitancy to go shopping:

I guess that's because of older people being most likely to go on a Monday morning? Perhaps different half terms too falling on these dates. It was also much warmer this time last year. Not sure they can make judgements based on a Monday morning.

I reckon this coming weekend will look healthier!

Didn’t work for me - 37 at the end of July. Hopefully not too far away!

Ah, it's not letting me book because there are no slots for 2nd jabs. Thanks for the heads-up though.
