Vaccines have given us hope, but they won't end the global battle against Covid

In other words just like the flu.

Honestly lose my mind at some of the headlines the media uses to get clicks only to find that the actual content says everything we already know...

but it isn't just like flu.

I'm pretty sure in order for it to survive it will eventually mutate to something which isn't as severe?

We will also have regular vaccinations to deal with the said mutations.

Like the flu.

Apologies if this is an over-intrusive question, but what age category do each of your loved ones fall into? Would be interesting to know if those outside the JCVI top four have started getting jabbed. No obligation to reveal, of course.

I'm 71 and Mrs GH is 69.  My brother-in-law, who's 72 has just had his appointment for a first jab next week too.  We all live in South Wales and have been called to mass vaccination centres set up in community sports halls.

Was about to pop in and say the same thing. The headline suggests that even with vaccines, this (lockdowns, restrictions, no normality) is going to go on for a very long time yet, but the piece doesn't really say that at all and is exactly what most have suggested would be where we end up, mild disease for the most part, some individuals needing further protection (ie managed like flu, still a problem and still puts pressure on our healthcare systems, but manageable with surveillance and updated vaccination programmes). It's always possible for biology to ruin our predictions, but it does seem the most likely end point based on all the information we have.

So essentially almost 1 in 10 in care homes aren’t take up the vaccine? Hopefully it’s for medical reasons and not them just refusing to have it.

Will probably be some who have refused it, and some won't have been able to take at the time because they've been ill or on certain medication.

If the patient has to give consent I suppose it's possible some of the ones with severe dementia etc. are not capable of doing that and so may be missed, maybe they need next of kin with POA permission.

They also haven't been able to go to care homes because of outbreaks in a few

It does say though that 99% of care homes have been visited by vaccination teams. Hopefully 90% of residents vaccinated, along with close to 100% of staff, will be the foundations of the ring of steel that was supposed to have been put around care homes in the first place. With the emerging data on suppression of transmission through vaccination, if family members and visitors are also vaccinated this should hopefully be sufficient herd immunity to protect those that for whatever reason didn't or couldn't take the vaccine. As more of the population get their shots, we should see community levels of the virus drop quite a bit if the transmission data is true.
