Who thinks lockdown has been a walk in the park?

It’s been horrible for me. Emotionally tough and stressful. Strained relationships, missed memories, no release.

And I consider myself one of the lucky ones as I’ve still been earning, my family are safe and I’m not waiting for hospital treatment.

Nobody?

EDIT: I think maybe some people think it's been a walk in the park for other people.

Yeah, I think everyone has found parts of the lockdowns difficult at some point or another which is understandable given how big a change it has been.

For me it hasn't been too bad just because where I am in my life...I don't have much of a social life as have a family, and I have been able to work throughout and am financially ok, and my main escape these days is running and walking the dog which I have been able to continue without interruption. I have missed seeing my mum the most, but with zoom I've probably "seen" and talked to her much more than I'd normally do, same with my siblings who I hardly see in normal times. My kid's mental health has improved with less school, and she has still managed to see her friends quite a bit the little rule breaker....but don't get me wrong, I know how this lockdown must be a total nightmare for a lot of people...young people, those who live alone, those who have lost businesses/jobs/income, those with health conditions that can't get treated, those who live far from loved ones etc etc.

I would really like to go to a busy pub though. And I was really looking forward to a festival this summer, but not sure if I'll get to one...although I do have tickets for Manchester psych fest in September.

I have to say I find the idea that Johnson would be toast should there be another summer wave, given that he's already survived:

  • fucking up the brexit negotiations
  • completely mishandling the pandemic from the start
  • the complete fuck up of Christmas/NY
  • repeatedly lying to parliament
  • the Acuri scandal
  • and many, many more hits,

quite cute.

I think the Scottish Tories will do horrendous in the Scottish elections due to Johnson. They completely rely on the unionist vote and I don't think it will be forgotten that he sold out the Northern Irish unionists.

I've had quite an easy lockdown. I'm an introvert, so sometimes it's good not to feel obliged to socialise with my more extroverted friends. I'm working from home, which is nice. I've saved money by not being able to go to festivals or on holiday. I live with my husband and have no kids, so I haven't been lonely or had the stress of home schooling etc.

But that doesn't mean I want lockdown to go on forever, or that I'm not aware that a lot of people haven't been as lucky as me. My lockdown has been a walk in the park, but I don't think everyone else is squinnying over nothing.

Lol what?

We chose 3 months because that's all that had been tested and that we had any data for whatsover. In the same way we've now discovered that 3 months isn't just okay, but better than 2 weeks, it stands to reason that the *best* interval is just as likely to be over 3 months as between 2 weeks and 3 months. Plus it means you can vaccinate more of the population more quickly.

I've said before, if you guys are so convinced that the vaccine will reduce transmission loads, you should be in favour of giving everyone a single dose first then doing second doses. Because the marginal benefits of the second dose are not as good as the benefits you'll get of reducing transmission by having everyone vaccinated. Even for the more vulnerable.

Muzzles

Just testing the automatic down voters 🙂

They do make human muzzles you know. Ironically they're normally fitted below the nose for safety reasons. They're a BDSM thing so all the talk you've done about muzzling your kids probably has you on some watch list at this point.

I hope that's a funding issue and not a sign of what's going to happen to the nightlife industry....

It's a funding thing.

TfL lost a shitload of money last year, due to, you know, being a public transport system reliant on fares for its money suddenly having a 90+% drop off in passengers. This meant they had to go to national government for funding and the Tories imposed a bunch of budget cuts/measures which they made integral to the deal, and yet for which they are currently trying to blame Sadiq Khan...

Yeah, mines been pretty cruisey.

Furloughed for the majority of it and thanks to very cheap living expenses (staff accommodation) I've not had any money troubles. Even when we reopened I still didn't do my full hours. No kids, so none of the grief of homeschooling etc. Housemates I mostly get on with (and the one I don't like moved in with his parents so that was a result!) so no loneliness and I live in the Lake district which hasn't been this quiet (not right now, it's starting to get busier again) since Wordsworth's day so that's been my walking in the park.

I don't feel guilty about this but definitely acknowledge that so so many people, including lots of my friends, through no fault of their own have had a much worse time of it.

wow - send one my way - I will take whatever is on offer...

that and the NYT article from earlier shows how dangerous it is to Pause the vaccine programme and expect everything to be ok even if you do want to restart it

    • I don't think a whole raft of attendees who've been going every year since the mid 90s and mid 10s collectively all thinking the festival is no longer for us suggests we've all aged out of it at the same time. Something fundamental has changed and its pretty obvious what that is. The fact that theyve managed to skinny down the line up so much AND STILL get punters in is a real credit to the bookers, filling it with enough of the current thing to get the kids excited for a weekend while pulling in enough big names to make it worth a day out for the casual Florence fan etc... is impresive. Re Leeds: Annecdotally, from videos, numbers have looked tiny vs Reading, esp on the camping end of things, it would be good to know the official numbers and how much they're down from the peak sell out years

    • I mean she's never going to admit it, but of course she would do a deal...same as Labour would with lib-dems/greens if meant getting into government.
    • They probably do make more from the festival. But take a look at an aerial photo from any year - there's always a few fields that would be viable for festival related use yet are left empty. I guess they just don't want to deal with the associated hassle.
