does Glastonbury really give leg ups to smaller acts that frequently? If you look back over past headliners I think it's a bit of a myth.

The Killers, Arctic Monkeys, Beyoncé, Kings of Leon and Mumford & Sons all got their first major headlining slots off of Glastonbury in the past ten years.

It depends on if you choose to discuss smaller acts.

In recent history GF gave the Arctic Monkeys Pyramid Healine and the next year they headlined everywhere.

In 2014 the gave Kasabian Pyramid Headliners in 2015 they are headlining everywhere.

Maybe that is what she meant?

The thing about Emily's comments about Florence is that she says she "doesn't know what she's doing in summer". That is almost certainly untrue. If she's lying there then not much else she said in the interview can really be believed. It's just standard platitudes.

If it is true, she's not playing.

That's exactly what i thought... and if she does know about florence's plans why would she big up another festival's headliner(though i don't think glastonbury loses too much sleep over ticket sales over other festivals).

I struggle to see any scenario that would lead her to say what she did other than florence is playing. Whether she is bigging up florence to be a headliner, or saying that flo as sub-headliner (or even co-headliner) is a real coup is more the question to me.

If our remaining headliners are coldplay and elton there would be no need to talk about developing headliners - In terms of new headliners it's difficult to think of anyone possible bar flo and TS.

Not quite within years but Muse also? Gorillaz too (though i realise that was special circumstances like basement jaxx)? That's quite a few when you add them up...

Kasabian had already headlined R+L :P

Yes where would those minnows be without Glastonbury....

Well in hindsight now they've all headlined loads of festivals since they might seem like more obvious choices but Florence is the same position as them and bigger than some of them were. There were undoubtedly many people complaining that they were weak choices at the time too. It's just part of the process.

my take from Emily speaking about Flo is that she's not headlining anyway, tho it's of course possible I'm wrong. I lean that way more than I do the "she's headlining" way.

I'd say Flo will play before Coldplay.

I must say I can only see them as subs not headliners, so totally with you on this one

I really don't think flo is comparable to any of those acts.

Killers were massive. I saw them in the tent in 2004 then on the pyramid in 2005. They were adored. Them headlining was no risk.

Beyonce had been a global mega star for a decade.

Mumfords had conquered the world in a way flo is nowhere near.

I dunno much about Kings of Leon but they had a few albums already plus that shitty sex on fire song. They were bigger than she is I reckon.

Even arctics in 2007 isn't comparable as there was a tidal wave of hype around them that flo doesn't have.

She's just a bog average act being bumped due to lack of options

She's headlined Bestival and Latitude, subbed T, R+L and IOW already and by most accounts she got a big turnout at the Glastonbury set she did on her first album. Sold out arena tours and been tipped to headline on the next album since her last festival summer. To say that she's a no-mark is pretty staggering.

I think Russy actually meant to say she was 'shite'.

I've just given that Foo Fighters gig from Reading a go. First time I've had a listen (knowingly) to the Foo Fighters. Absolutely the antithesis of my type of thing. Rock guitars. Alternate histrionic squealing/ growling from Grohl while the others pound away tediously. Not for me.

For all my defence of her, I probably wouldn't go see her unless there really wasn't much else on - which is completely possible. I just think a new headliner that's reached the stature Florence has absolutely deserves to be given the nod instead of repeat bookings and all these older acts that have only just heard about Glastonbury.

i think russy is just thoroughly ignorant of FATM and their size.

we're talking about a multi-million selling, Coachella-subbing, European festival headlining act that headlined mid-sized UK festivals on their last album.

if they're not at Glastonbury headliner level, then they're very, very close.

Absolutely spot on. If Florence hasn't done enough to be offered a shot at headlining then the bar for new acts is being set stupidly and unrealistically high.

Jay Z hadn't actually headlined any other festivals before Glastonbury either, I believe?

Kings of Leon were fairly popular in the UK at the time, they went global not long after that headline set as Only By the Night released with Sex on Fire on it. They preceeded to be naff for another 4 years and then released a decent album again in Mechanical Bull.

    • From Magyar’s FB:   ”Our country's energy and water supply is stable. As of today, voluntary consumption reduction is no longer necessary. The turbine at the Paks power plant is generating stably. Thanks to precipitation in Austria, the water level of the Danube will temporarily rise by 20–30 centimeters. Thank you, Hungary, for the unprecedented national unity shown in recent days! We have much to be proud of, and much to carry forward into the period ahead.”

    • New Overmono album is... just good for me. Had high hopes which were later dashed a bit after listening to some of the singles but they brought me back around enough to appreciate some very nice work in there. https://music.apple.com/ie/album/pure-devotion/1894298100
