I'm fairly sure that the hottest day the festival has ever seen was Wednesday 2017 when it was in the mid 30s.  It was kind of surreal pitching my tent in that heat and then having to basically bin off everything I was wearing because it was drenched with sweat.

 

I thought I'd experienced a few hot festivals, 99 and 10 were both scorchers but honestly the last 5 years have put those to shame.  I'm fairly sure that 2019 was the year I sacked off most of one of the days because it was just killing me and I spent most of my day kipping in the shade.

 

They definitely need to think about large shade solutions and water misters in key areas as this kind of spell of extreme weather is not only going to become the norm, but is likely to be milder than what is coming down the line over the next couple of decades.

Whilst there have been odd days in recent festivals that were off the scale scorchers I seem to remember 2010 was relentless over the entire festival. And it was glorious!🙂

 

I've never seen dust like that on site though before or since. I think my tent that was used that year is still covered in it.

Think the most rain I've experienced at Glastonbury was a wet Sunday mid-morning and it was crap, I looked vulnerable and got upsold on making a donation to Greenpeace 🙂

What is my point here?  I'd rather biblical heat to biblical flood.

Yeah, 2010 felt like a hot one at the time, but manageable.  The dust was impressive and coated everything.  I had a white t-shirt that got stained by a mixture of sweaty sunscreen and dust that never came clean after.  The campsites looked like a refugee tent city in the dust and it was the first time I saw a mini-tornado.

 

It's a serious business though, heat.  I still maintain it can f**k you up at a festival worse than rain.  I know that Boomtown in particular have made a massive effort with regards to adding shade and other festivals need to take notes.

Its hard work as a pale bloke who doesnt appreciate the higher temps. Ive learnt to avoid the sun whenever possible, and hoover up the shade if im at a festival. On that note, how amazing are trees and bushes? My walk to work today was down a tree-lined road and god, it was blissful compares to the other side of the road.

I wonder what they do if it was a red warning rather than amber like is today? That means schools closed and people are supposed to avoid going anywhere unless they have to. Would they even open the gates?

We all know Glastonbury is bigger and harder but it does seem like all major concerts / festivals actually planned for the coming days - BST, State Fayre, Harry Styles, The Cure in Wales etc - are still going ahead

This is interesting. I've been every year since 2011.

 

I remember 2011 being quite bad, upon entry. Very much 'what have I signed up for here?' territory.

2016 I remember vividly - van towed out of the ground ON ARRIVAL, and New Order saying the crowd was flat in between songs, referencing the weather.

 

2014 (I think) I remember some torrential downpours - I had to leave Jagwar Ma midway through on Park. It just wasn't enjoyable stood there dripping. I think that was the year where the music got temporarily stopped during a storm as well, then Elbow came on Pyramid as the clouds parted. I think that was all 2014 anyway, sometimes the years blend a bit.

 

2013 I don't recall being particularly bad but there are pictures lurking of me in wellies, so the ground can't have been great.

 

Still stand by that I've been very lucky, though. The run since 2016 has been insane, tbh.

Those rainfall figures are presumably for Yeovilton, and I don't trust them for Worthy Farm - I remember the weather in 2009 as being very similar to 2008 so I'd be surprised if there was actually 7 times as much rain. Certainly not anything in the way of noticeable mud.

 

My recollection is hazy by this point but I remember 2009 as some light rain on either the Wed or Thu evening, fairly clear over the weekend itself (maybe a few light spots of rain but nothing memorable / damaging), and then a couple of relatively short but heavy showers on the Sunday night / Monday morning. I think 2008 was near enough exactly the same but without the Sunday night showers.

Agreed...apart from the almighty thunderstorm on Thursday night, 2009 was a nice dry sunny one (Sunday in particular up until right after Blur). I was back in trainers by lunchtime on the Friday and sitting on the hill in the park in the sun watching the Dead Weather! (ok there was the odd muddy patch in shady areas for a bit, but if you can sit on the ground anywhere, it's not a muddy one!)...

It’s a fine line. Sure it’s up to people to look after themselves, but knowing so many don’t, does the festival have a responsibility to regulate best behaviour in the midst of potentially fatal heat?

Coachella, Mad Cool, Primavera etc have a totally different setup. Later starts and finishes, no camping or camping off site, misting areas, huge airport sized hangers for shade, water everywhere.

Yeah Sunday afternoon for Brian Wilson was lit in all ways
