App telling me to isolate for 9 days ..,, will that change with a negative test ?

Hello Crazyfool, sorry didn’t see the start of this conversation. Are you isolating due to being in contact with someone who has tested positive?

If that is the case, the length of time you isolate (I think this is normally ten days but could be wrong) is about the maximum length of time that symptoms could emerge. So I don’t think a negative result before that time would reduce your isolation time.

Sorry this is a worrying time for you

I’m isolating because I have a cough that’s got slightly worse ... and my blood sugars are slightly raised ... often the sign of an infection ... test booked in today ... along with someone I work with testing positive... think it’s very sensible to be cautious on this ....

Reading a lot on Twitter about a tier 5.

Apparently an 8pm curfew, and you can't leave the house unless for work or food. Not even exercise.

Probably Twitter BS, but would be a double kick in the nads for me. Tomorrow (well, today) is the end of my isolation. I got made redundant on the 11th. Whilst serving my notice, someone was bought in from outside who ended up having COVID. That put me on a 10 isolation starting on the 17th. I had a test at work, which came back negative. The following day, my sister (who works for the police) was sent home with symptoms. Got a positive test that day. So now not only was I in isolation, but also my sister and parents (Well my dad already was as we worked together). The 28th is our first day of freedom.

If these tier 5 rules are true, they are awful for me. I have no job to go to, and I won't be allowed out for anything other than food shopping. These 10 days have been bad enough, especially as my girlfriend and I live in different T4 counties, so we can't even see each other from a distance in the park.

It's a serious drain on mental health. I can't help but feel like any more tightening of restrictions and people are going to well and truly kick off... I also can't shake the idea that they are going to do something that takes the news away from Brexit on 1 Jan, whether it be tightening or loosening restrictions or even a national lockdown. They've definitely fucked the country some way in that deal, and they won't want us to realise.

Look you should be grateful for more restrictions for as long as possible. WW2 or something. More lockdown the better. Maybe extra lockdowns once everyone is vaccinated just to make sure.

But seriously, sorry to hear its impacting on your mental health so much. All the best

I'd be amazed if the government did anything like curfews or a ban on exercise, but I guess I could see the schools closing. There will be so much opposition to it from his party though at this stage that I'd be surprised.

In reality it wouldn't make any difference to my life currently to be honest, but it would be really shit for kids and working parents again. But what's the alternative if tier 4 isn't working?

We don't know if it is yet really, do we? Not been long enough.

Hope it's negative and if not I hope you get a very mild dose!

Its not about you catching it. Its because its exponential and someone you infect with infect someone who infects someone vulnerable.

If you decide you don't want to risk catching it until the vaccine but you aren't vulnerable, due to age or NHS occupation, they won't shut down society and the economy for you (or me).

But in that case people that don’t interact with people who are vulnerable should be able to form social bubbles as large as they like. (Again, I don’t actually believe this as I don’t think the measures are solely about protecting the old and vulnerable, am just following the thinking through).

Sorry was supposed to quote @deano where he said he didn’t interact with the elderly and vulnerable...  one of those sets of people it’s very doubtful you would know if you were interacting with them or not ... whilst going about your daily life ... and even just visiting the shops

How about indirectly interacting with them down at the shops, with someone who does. You need to think about it more broadly, it's not just about the immediate people around you.

I do agree though, I'll be doing what I can to avoid getting COVID now until I get a vaccine. That means minimal public transport, only really going to hang out with people I know and not taking uneeded risks.

What’s all this going down the shops? We went to a shop once between March and November. Supermarket delivery and Amazon for us. Only time we were within a meter of someone (other than our mental health bubble person) was when people refused to make any attempt to keep any distance between us when out walking.

Working from home obviously.

Now it sounds like people are saying I could have had as many people around at my house as I wanted as long as they were doing the same thing?

The rules are there to reduce the number of people all having Covid at the same time.

If there was unlimited NHS capacity we could just have carried on as normal - but there isn't.

Restrictions and lockdowns are like a flood gate - they help to control the flow.

As for going down the shop, milk and bread springs to mind. Not everyone can have online shopping as there isn't enough slots for it and some people still go to butchers etc... Which is good because otherwise they would be bust too.

@crazyfool1 I know this is a worrying time, but although obviously you don't want COVID, it's worth bearing in mind that if you have it, the most likely outcome, even with your diabetes is for a full recovery with minimal to no symptoms.

And if that does happen - then bonus! You now have antibodies, T-Cells and B-Cells and can have a hugely reduced rate of the thing having any effect on you, or being able to pass it on.

This might be the "good news" we're all trying to avoid!

P.S. Obviously I'm not going to a COVID party, but if I did it would probably be fine.

Pro lockdown people may get what they want

You do realise that it's like being "pro chemotherapy". Nobody likes that stuff, they're just really not keen on cancer.

And we do need to extend the Christmas holidays and put everyone in Tier 4 ASAP. Well, Manchester at least.

I like to think of myself more as "anti-exponential growth" rather than "pro-lockdown". Or anti-graphs-like-the-below.

Exactly, people need to realise that these restrictions aren’t being brought in as a punishment. They are needed to help curb the spread of the virus. We can hold off going to the pub for a little bit longer.

I would be very wary of you getting your news from twitter speculation. If you're concerned about your MH that is the worst place to be hanging out.

I can't see the newer restrictions being any tougher than places being shoved in tier 4 and schools being closed (which is the one thing they've stubbornly refused to do so far and is an easy win). Certainly cannot see curfews and limits on exercise/outdoor activities being introduced.

No it's not. It's about not providing enough economic support during a pandemic.

And how do you pay for it?

I don't disagree but it's a balancing act...

In answer to my own question it will be cuts to public services and the NHS.

I find the argument that people want the  restrictions lifting to ‘go the pub’ very tedious at this stage. It’s clearly much more than that. Does anybody even really care about that anymore?
People want to be able to see their friends and family whenever they want, they want their jobs/business back, they want to be able to take their children swimming and to soft play centres etc.

Yes, the restrictions are still clearly needed and I think the majority agree with them being in place as the virus continues to spread - but it’s very difficult for many to just see the positives of restrictions when it is clearly impacting people in so many other negative ways.

I agree with every word of this, I'm happy to comply to any restrictions as long as I know they have the benefit, I really struggled not seeing people through November but had been told the pay off would be being able to see family and friends more the following month and what did we even get in the end? 1 single day which just felt like a rush.

I know myself and many others are being responsible e.g. we had been planning to have people over in our garden this weekend and to be distanced from them, but the endless restrictions and not being able to see loved ones is really having its impact now

Cheers stu ... probably being cautious ... let’s wait and see ... just done the test at the local racecourse ... so time to wait now ... and cross everything ...
