I don't know what some people expect. We are told it will be a very tough winter with tough restrictions in place throughout, with the Spring earmarked as when things can start to get better but some think we'll be seeing a loosening of restrictions by February. We are in this for the winter sadly.

To clarify, it is a member of the Cabinet who has intimated that loosening of restrictions could start at the end of February, best case scenario wise.

So my housemate went to his parents ( in same town ) for Xmas and now his stepdad has tested positive.

It's pretty obvious to me how all this was gonna play out. Just sucks cause I spent Xmas alone to minimize risk n it doesn't even matter.

Stay safe out there!

and you  .... I presume the app has pinged him ?

Cabinet members individually say a lot of things. If people expect restrictions to be loosened mid-winter they are going to be disappointed. Areas could go down a tier like they have done but overall we are in this position till the Spring regardless of how many they vaccinate.

That's not a bad thing when it comes to vaccines. Too doom laden and people will just give up. Some hope and people will follow more to give time for vaccinations.

Anyway, FT says its MHRA source rather than a govt one

Again with the baseless claims that people will stop follow the rules with no data to back this up.

Is that where it comes from? That’s wildly optimistic. Probably about appeasement of backbenchers. Even though Labour won’t vote against them.

That's what I'm expecting too. I'm basically geared up for tier 4 until end of March with any reprieve a bonus.

This sounds more likely. Maybe a bit of relaxation in March as the days start getting longer but I’m geared up for more of this torture until the clocks go forward.

do you not think that there will be some that who have had jabs that will be happier to be a bit more mobile then ?  Ive no data .... but I do think it will happen dependant on the tier situation ....

? Its human nature. I'm not sure what data you need? There are polls which says this lockdown is less followed than the first one. And any post vaccine will be less followed.

The same discussion basically goes round and round in this thread about when the restrictions will be relaxed. I think it boils down to much the same thing that it did in the first thread about coronavirus and Glastonbury: that some people find it easier to think positively and err on that side, and others prefer to prepare themselves for the worst and that way anything less is a bonus. I'm in the latter camp but I think it's quite an even split in here having followed this thread for some time.

I haven't asked obviously mine won't ping till we get tested

I think that you dont get tested until you show symptoms ... and he is the only one that needs to isolate when the app pings him ... as his housemate you dont need to unless you show symptoms ... standing by to be corrected though

But its not a punishment. We should all be grateful if the govt locks us down

That was on 5th December

The same member of the Cabinet as this one four days ago?

At the latest Downing Street press conference Hancock was asked if he thought the government was guilty of overpromising by suggesting the UK can return to normality by Easter.

The Tory minister said he was “highly confident we’ll get things back to normal by 2022” due to the coronavirus vaccine roll-out.

I didn't say we should be grateful, they are needed to stem the transmission of the virus. The fact that some on social media are peddling that these restrictions are a punishment is part of the problem. We should view them as a necessary tool to help us get in top of the virus and keep services running in the NHS.

Yeah there might be some, but with the public messaging being that we still need to social distance etc for a while after having the vaccine then the majority will still do so because it's the right thing to do.

Do you genuinely think we will have restrictions until the end of next year and people will go along with it?

Yeah that isn't the message politicians are giving and I dont think it is the right thing to do to mess up the economy or peoples employment one minute more than is absolutely necessary to stop multiple deaths.

Once the death rate and hospitalisation rates are massively down thanks to mass vaccination (hopefully by easter) then social distancing can get and stay in the bin as far as I am concerned.

There will absolutely be restrictions until end of next year - whether people want to go along with it is irrelevant. Domestically we might be ok, but you will find that travel restrictions will still exist.

So the Telegraph says - "Ministers are looking at proposals to triple the length of time between taking a first and second dose from three weeks to 12 weeks, in order to speed up the delivery of the vaccine."

Aside from the very dodgy maths there, why the hell should Ministers even have input on that? It should be a medical decision and should be left for medical people to decide based on facts. Politicians should shut the fuck up on aspects like that.

I dont even think that tbh. Tourism is too important.

There’s going to be some fabulous psychology studies done about human behaviour in this Pandemic

Ha on both ends!

I'm no lockdown sceptic. I acknowledge the need for it when we need to control things. I'm just amazed that some people seem to want it past a point when restrictions will be worse than covid past mass vaccinations.
