I think if anything, they acted too early with their Christmas announcement. Given the circumstances, a couple of weeks notice would have been acceptable - and I’m sure we have been given a different level of restrictions if this was addressed a week or so ago rather than a month ago.

I think the issue is people do need time to plan for the gatherings no matter the size so the time might have been necessary but maybe a delay of a week or 2 would have served better

We have a lot of bookings from London over the Christmas and New Year period. Quite a few came in after  the announcement yesterday, including one guy who'd booked for 11 nights. And couldn't understand why we were cancelling it. Asked if it'd be OK if he put a different address? Or if he went somewhere else first between London and here.

But there's still a lot of confusion. Had a few people from tier 3 areas who thought it was OK to go on holiday somewhere else because it was Christmas. In these cases I do actually believe them too.

Literally fucking *everything* the Government has to U-Turn on is easily predicable 2 weeks in advance of the actual decision, just by looking at the publicly available data.

If you could bet on those U-Turns, I’d make enough to retire at 30.

I'm with @efcfanwirral on this really. We have plans to see one set of parents, but I think if the government told us not to we could probably use that as an excuse not to. It gives a bit of extra weight and makes you feel less like the bad guy. As it stands we are going ahead but we both have big doubts about it. I have always felt there is a different between what's allowed and what's risky, but it just gives you a bit of breathing space to deflect the final decision away from you. 

I've already sacked off seeing my family, which I do feel bad about. But for me on a personal level it's not a huge heartache. I'm not big on Christmas and not hugely close to my family. I feel bad for my mum, but I know I will see them once it is safe to. I've seen them twice this year though, so not in the position of people who haven't seen theirs at all.

For people who have as much invested in it as @WestCountryGirl clearly does, I would say you should just do it. You're clearly going to be as sensible as you can in the run up and it's clearly affecting your mental health. For me not seeing my parents for a few months is really not a big deal so I may as well play safe. For those who it is I can see it's a harder choice, especially when you have made plans and have your heart set on them.

I do think it would be unfair to penalise people just for living far away from each other though. As others have said it's the family who live far away from each other who are less likely to have seen each other this year than those who can go for a walk round the corner.

LadBible, which is a great barometer of public opinion on Facebook, has put a post up about Christmas potentially being cancelled. Around 90% of the comments are basically telling the government to get fucked and everyone is going to party regardless. 
 

Looks like there will be a huge spike in January 🤦‍♂️
