Can anyone remember the ferris wheel and apart from it being wobbly why did it go.

I remember it being there in 07 (my first) or 08 but I can't remember which one and could probably never place it on the site either.

Definitely existed though.

One line email from our financial director at work this morning in response to me asking for some funding earlier in the week.

I've sat staring at it for ages considering whether the response I'd REALLY like to give will be 'career limiting' or not.

It simply reads:

"Just what is it that you want to do?"

"I want to go to Glastonbury and get off my hooter on ket"

cant see any problems with that reply :D

I'm asked this question a lot down under when I let people know that I'm ostensibly travelling half the way around the world to spend five days in a tent on a farm in the English countryside.

It's always a difficult question to answer, because the answer is difficult. It's not something that's easy to get your head around without some experience, or at least some context. Often the question is pre-loaded with cynicism or mockery so no matter the answer, the reaction will be the same. And when I do try to explain it, my answer seems so self-aggrandizing that it almost invites the finger pointing it invokes.

But I'll share my answer here, because it's more likely to be understood, if not shared.

What I get from Glastonbury is a sense of togetherness. It's the power of people, coming together in unison, in spite of differing musical tastes. In spite of preferences about how we tap into our most relaxed state, whether that be chemical or an early night. In spite of whether we embrace or whether we escape. For five days, having stepped through those gates, we are family. Regardless of income or social standing or career position, we're all just ticket holders, there for a great time and willing to come alongside each other. Well, most of us.

The surface level is music. That's what gets reported. That's the reputation. It's mud and hippies and Hunter boots and drugs and Daily Mail soft porn. And there is that side of things and that's fine too, but then there's Leftfield with it's political progressiveness and open, inclusive discussion. There's Shangri La and the SE Corner with it's art installations and challenges to appreciate different expressions of communication. There's the healing fields, inviting us to expand our mind and investigate new takes on reality.

Put together, there's one word that sums up Glastonbury for me. It seems outlandish, even hyperbolic, and it's not something you'd appreciate unless you've been there, open minded, in the spirit of what's put on our plate for five days straight, but Glastonbury can be summed up in this one word. The culmination of nearly everyone's experience, for however long it lasts:

Hope.

Without being too cringe

it really puts things into perspective for me. Recharges me for a bit. It's the highlight of my summer, no matter what I do.

i'm already dreading that feeling of coming home on the Monday afternoon

"Hi Elaine,

We want to be free, to do what we've got to do. But I realise that although it's just the start of the FY budgets and we think we're loaded and just want to have a good time getting everything done we want to get done, there's constraints and competition for funding. Makes me want to scream!

Doesnt really have the same ring to it, but best I could do and won't get sacked / bollocked for it.

Enjoyed some of these responses!

It's hard to put your finger on and describe isn't it?

I've had a go though. Started a blog and may continue it.

Knocked that up pretty quickly, might yet edit it.

Absolutely wonderful writing, Simpo. Encapsulates everything I feel about the place and would want to say about the festival to anyone who will listen; made me well up big style.

Great write-up. I think I need to take a break from reading and watching Glastonbury related things... I'm far too excited far too early.

    • Tonight was a disgrace. There wasn't *that* much rain, and it wasn’t *that* windy. A festival of this size should be able to withstand some adverse weather without it bringing the whole circus to a standstill. And if it is true that part of a speaker on the Revolut stage fell…   As for the communication - announcing Massive Attack were playing at 12:30 and then nothing for over an hour while people waited in the rain. It’s laughable it really is.   If I said I’ll never come back again I’d be lying. The shambles of Barcelona 2022 and the disgrace of Madrid 2023 didn’t stop me, so this probably won’t either.   This festival gets so much wrong, but it is always saved by having such killer line-ups. It’s just a shame it treats the fans/customers/consumers like animals. Compare it to somewhere like Glastonbury and it’s worlds apart.
    • Yeah, I admit that a small part of me felt relieved when they announced that MA are canceled.. But on the positive side- got to see Florence Road afterall, and they were great
    • Glad I could take the €3 bus to Playa Catalunya! Hope y'all warm and dry up.
