I don't think you're grasping how big a deal it was... To say he was a children's presenter greatly undersells how popular he was. I'm fairly sure it was the biggest crowd of the weekend. This was of course before the legends slot became a 'thing' - we certainly never used that phrase in the 90s, but his impact was the closest to Dolly-sized phenomenon that year.

Dolly is a musician.  Rolf was a big deal, fun and popular, yes, but musical legend? No.

Was he in that slot?

Clarification who I was talking about being popular.

nah ... it was much later when Rolf was a big thing.

It didn't start happening every year then though. Otherwise in 2003 it was feeder, sugababes or Macy gray. From James Brown in 2004 every year there has been a 'legend' four down on the pyramid every year.

It might not have started happening every year (I'm not sure, tho I thought it had), but for me as a punter that oldie slot started with tom Jones in '92 (I've been going since '86).

Perhaps it wasn't always on Sunday? Or they couldn't find someone suitable in 2003?

Biffy

Fleetwood Mac

Coldplay

If they get the Roses then Biffy move to Other.

The Jacksons fill the legend slot followed by Adele. You canny move for chairs and blankets which you can then use to get some kip on during Coldplay.

Biffy Clyro and Adele in non-headline slots? Christ. Can't tell if the Adele one was serious but Biffy won't be playing a non-headline slot.

To be clear, my long held total guess for the 3 headliners is Biffy,  F Mac, Coldplay.

I think they fancy Adele but share many peoples concerns about 1 hour 45 of her ballads headling the pyramid. So after the legend to a big sunset crowd could sound like a plan.

I admit that getting the Roses in instead of Biffy, now they are back on the road, was more personal preference / wishful thinking.

I love forum logic sometimes.. Band A will headline main stage unless Band B play, in which instance Band A will headline second stage.

Unless of course Band C are already booked to play somewhere else and then they get them in instead....although that was maybe Plan B than Band B.

Hearing this a lot lately and totally don't buy it. Just because an act is predominantly slower-paced, there's no reason why that should exclude them from headlining. I admit the vibe will be different from Metallica of Kasabian, but different doesn't equate to worse, and I expect for the fans, it will be magical, even if there is no mosh pit.

I'll be elsewhere.

i agree.  she's not my cup of tea, but she has fans by the legion, many of whom will be at the festival and will be happy do see her.

I personally believe it's more Adele having been to the festival and having sussed this out for herself...and thus excluding herself. Unless a more suitable slot is found for her*

And less to do with that stuff (she never explicity said) about not playing to huge crowds.

*Leonard Cohen played 'slowies' for 90 minutes from The Pyramid earlier in the day. (And was fucking brilliant).
