Weather thread 2015

2011 was indeed a tad nippy; I wore the same 3 layers for the whole 5 days just about, colder than a polar bears nib nabs overnight it was.

Absolutely stinking when I got home, a steaming hot bath x 2 was needed to decontaminate, but it was still bloody brilliant! :)

Fri 2011 wasn't nice, but at no point was I as uncomfortable as I was in the heat of 2010.

Whether or not I'd be saying it after 5 days like 2007, I cannot say as I wasn't there. I suspect I would have preferred 2010 as I got restbite from the heat at night.

I have to agree, I can handle rain and mud but the heat of 2010 was completely unbearable and ruined the daytime of my festival. I couldn't do anything until the evening, completely uncomfortable. Edited by alframsey

2010 heat was humid to shit! We were sat around JP and in the open air it was a case of drink some water if you could struggle to move lol. My mate had my rain jacket during the Robert Plant rain last year so I literally had a tshirt on, no jumper or anything and by the end, that was getting a bit needed one but it was more as I was drenched and didn't fancy getting ill than it was cold. Lovely to change out of it though, try off with a towel and change. If I didn't think it would be my only U2 chance and it was Gorillaz the previous year instead, I'd have gone without a thought,

As testing as 2010 could be, I would have serious concerns about anyone who preferred 2007. I still have flashbacks every time it starts to rain at the festival.

2007, the cold, and the unrelenting rain, was what led to the NFR NFC thread..

I was there in '97 and '98 and personally I think the cold made it worse than those years.

Those who moan about '10 just can't imagine how shit it was.

Still had a good time, but it did feel like some sort of endurance test.

I know I've not been to GF, but I've done hot festivals. And I'm old enough to remember 1976.

In terms of British weather I would suggest that it's 'not possible' to be too hot! I'll take slightly uncomfortable sweltering at a festival over any rain every day of the week.

As a ginger, I disagree

Why the fleece I have to ask? It may be wet but it's highly doubtful it'll be 'fleece cold' enough at the end of June, even at night it's been 16/17 down here in Cornwall. Fleece in June to me spells 'sweat to death' haha

In my opinion whilst rainfall charts are unreliable, temperature is rarely massively wrong.  However a clear evening in June can be bloody cold.

Sadly, Harry, I am prepared to sacrifice you to the burnt crisp club to ensure I get a hot sunny festival. I don't feel good about it, but it's a tough world out there.

If only I had a soul to sacrifice :D

I'm a ginger and would happily sacrifice myself for a hotty this year. I just want to sit on the grass this year. Last year I had jelly legs by Sunday.

Accuweather has dipped down dramatically. Rain on Wednesday and Thursday, and highs of 21, 18 and 20 during the festival.

I knew I'd tempted fate by posting screenshots to my Glastonbury WhatsApp group!

I always look at the weather for a few days after the festival if it's looking bad. In my mind there's every chance it will blow in sooner... Edited by Peroni

Ok then ;)

This data is scraped from the NOMADS Ensemble Probability Tool which basically allows users to query the GFS ensembles to determine probability of a selected set of weather conditions at a given location. Ive written a little R script that queries an ensemble run for multiple precipitation events (rainfall of less than 1mm/6hour and greater than 1,2,3,4,6,8,10,15,20&25 mm/6hour) at the location of the festival this is then graphed as below.

The X axis represents the probability of the event occurring as a percentage, the Y the Y axis represents the rainfall amount queried for 4 each day

The blue bar represents the last available ensemble run and the black + * x show the same results from the previous 3 ensemble runs, Ive put these here as the give an indication of confidence in the forecasts, i.e. if the models are constantly showing the same outputs we can be more confident in their predictions than if they keep fluctuating wildly.

Only Wednesday to Friday so far as gfs doesn't go beyond that point.

Holy shit, that's some effort!

    • It can take around 30-45 mins to walk from the arena back to the transport hub with the crowds, depending on density. Allow even longer in poor conditions. I don't think you'd need to leave Linkin Park early though, you have at least an hour and 20 minutes to walk to transportation. I certainly wouldn't leave early in your shoes, knowing I can just walk to the airport if needs be (2 mile walk and another 30 - 45 min walk depending on your walking speed and conditions.) Maybe just don't linger too long for the toilet / food after Linkin Park have finished.  It will definitely make sense and all just fall into place on the night, don't worry too much and have a great time. The very worst that can happen is a little extra walking to the Airport Skylink bus stop, as those Skylink busses are 100% 24 hour. 🙂  GFS, ICON and ECMWF are ALL in agreement on the latest runs.... After a mildly moist Weds and Thurs, high Pressure building from Friday... Lets just hope they continue to agree... ☀️☀️☀️
