Dylan live is an absolutely incredible thing. Reinvention, inspiration, a moment, something that will never be the same twice. You're seeing art, and artist creating something specific and unique. But some people want a faithful rendition of a song he recorded on a rainy afternoon 50 years ago.

Apparently the band and Michael eavis don't see eye to eye after rhcp pulled out of headlining in 93. Allegedly they even offered to play for free one year! Alas, they Are between releasing albums and are not touring currently so it looks pretty unlikely. However, I am of the opinion that if they were to headline they would fucking smash it and play a helluva headline set, whether that's now or ten years ago when they were "relevant", still a massive band imo. Just gutted ill never get to see em with frusciante on guitar.

I saw them with Frusciant and they were fairly bad, I hear they're worse now without him, unsurprisingly

some people want an acknowledgement that an audience exists and there is some kind of communication between themselves and the artist

Sure, but if they go and se Dylan, and know anything about him and how he's done his concerts for the last 50 years, they should know they're not going to get that. It's like reading a Sven Hassel book and complaining there's not much romance in it.

Rhcp were awful when I saw them at Reading 07. Although I've never been a massive fan anyway.

I'm not much of a fan but went with my Ex to see them at the O2 and it was surprisingly quite good. Their live shows seem so inconsistent!

true...

I was almost impressed at the level of indifference he showed when I saw him

I'm fascinated by it. You're a musician, right? (Forgive me if i'm wrong about that) Now, i know that none of us can possibly know what's going on in Dylan's head, but do you think it's possible to perform like he does and only be interested in the music that arises from that form of improvisation/willfulness/spontaneity on stage?

Sven Hassel. Staple holiday reading for my old man. Orrible shite.

Hehehe, i've never actually read one, but in the same way i've never knowingly listened to the Foo Fighters, I'll have a punt on them being pretty terrible.

I get the whole improvisation thing, I really do but there's a fine line and one I'm sure it's very difficult for artists to judge.

As a music fan, I'm probably very hypocritical in my thoughts on it too. On the one hand I love seeing a band I've seen live loads of times doing something different but if it's a band I've never, or seldom seen, I want the big old tunes and I want them played properly.

You know you've hit that point with an act, when you treat the song that gets the biggest cheer with indifference or even a "Christ, not again".

Can't believe people even considering Libertines. 2 albums. 11 an 13 years ago. Not even remotely big enough. Pete Doherty was more famous for his substance abuse than his music.

I have read so much of this thread and it's a complete mind feck how the various theories for 3rd headliner evolve and sometimes funny how people reason their own choice.

Some of the names mentioned are amazing and as above some underwhelm me. How the hell have they managed to keep it such a good secret.

They're headlining at other major English festivals and their Hyde Park headline show was, while not quite sold out, very well attended. If you think they're not big enough to headline then you're dreaming.

Just watched paul and ringo play together at the rock n roll hall of fame induction on YouTube, have either been ruled out by being unavailable? Could they play under the name The Beatles or would there be some legal stuff preventing it?

I know it's a bit much to ask and it will probably be Oli Murrs or something

I'm very much up for different versions/interpretations of songs. Hendrix did it. Wilco does it... it can be done with a feeling of enthusiasm and fun.

I think that's the key though with inprovisation, it's the effect it has on the audience and not the performer. If an act is doing it out of self righteous personal motives he can do it alone in his front room and still have the same desired outcome. I think there has to be that thought of how it will be received by the paying audience - which causes more issues when you place that in a festival environment where not everyone has paid for this act, and even more issues when placed in a glastonbury environment where virtually no one has paid to see a specific act.

BonScott paid to see a specific act who aren't even playing.

Another UK fest for The Antlers? Getting my hopes up for a Glasto appearance...

I've only got into them recently but they're another act I'd like to see added to the lineup. They're playing in Poland over Glastonbury weekend so they're definitely around.
