It's to allow large touring productions to get their full show in. A good example would be Pet Shop Boys a couple years ago.

It's actually a relatively "standard" size - being the same off the shelf product as used by (amongst others) R+L, Wireless, Download, etc, and also approximately the same height as various others like IoW and BST.

 

It's actually the Pyramid (being smaller than the current industry norms) that's arguably out of proportion these days.
