Especially with schools all off now, the sooner the better imo.

Being cynical .. are they saving millions per day by not having to pay full furlough until Tier 4 / full lockdown is announced?

If so, then I certainly wouldn’t rule that out as a major factor.

It’s the calling card of this government though, acting too late, doing too little and among others.

so many people without .... I wish there was a way of defining the exempt though  ... Im sure so many are now taking the piss ... ive a family at work .... one said there was no way he was f ing wearing one ... then when the rule came in he was exempt .... then his mum became exempt and now is sister is too ..... Someone else had cold sores and had stopped wearing hers .... someone else says they give him nosebleeds ..... Its franky ridiculous in comparison to someone being severely ill or dying 😞

In Spain where I live everyone is wearing a mask and at all times in public. I mean everyone.

So either the UK is really unlucky to have so many people with these medical conditions or the vast majority are exaggerating because of their own entitlement.

Draw your own conclusions...

Really surprised there’s still that much resistance to wearing them. I could count on one hand the number of unmasked people I’ve seen indoors over the last few months, just seems to be the norm now. Even teenagers piling out of school into the corner shop are putting them on before they go in (I’m only using this example as back in September, this wasn’t the case, not having a go at teenagers!). The only places people aren’t wearing them is sitting down in bars, cafes, restaurants...and surprise surprise our cases have gone through the roof since they reopened 3 weeks ago (they’re closing again tomorrow)...

I have got quite used to wearing a mask, I really don’t see the issue with at all. Apart from when I go out and forget one ☹️

Pro tip - hang a spare one from your front door handle as a reminder.

From doing bus journeys I can see that the majority of non mask wearers seem to be younger women who don’t want to smudge their make up and the type to complain about getting spots from masks.

My biggest issue at the start of the mandatory mask wearing was that the masks that I had wouldn’t fit over my impressive lockdown beard. The beard had to go

It's strange seeing different people's experiences. Over the last few months I can probably count on one hand the number of people I've seen without wearing or properly wearing a mask, and it's definitely the kind of thing I'd notice.

Personally, I think there's benefit for them to become mandatory in places like hospitals (for visiting) for many years to come and I definitely think more people will take the Japanese cultural approach to wearing them in the future. Ok, maybe not totally widespread but I can definitely see them becoming used as normal practice beyond the pandemic on public transport or flights, etc. COVID aside, I think I read that many seasonal bug figures are down, probably due in small part to not coughing over each other on the tube, bus, plane, etc.

I keep an emergency one folded in my wallet.

I think it could be advisable, certainly in winter going forward. Everyone saying that it would be really tough this winter because “we’d have flu as well as Covid” and yet it’s been a very mild flu season because all the measures also slow flu viruses, which just aren’t in the same league as Covid. It’s obviously gonna be a tough winter but flus not a big factor in that.

In East London, I'd say it's about a 50% "good compliance" rate, which I find quite depressing, given the very minor inconvenience to wear one.

Thats dreadful if anywhere near correct (50% figure I meant to quote above)

In Edinburgh and surrounding regions it's easily 95% plus. I believe this is reflected in the virus prevalence here as the numbers have been relatively low compared to the UK as a whole.

I am sure this is also a direct correlation with maks compliance and wider rule breaking.

I’m another that gets quite surprised by the constant anecdotes of no one wearing masks. I moved out of London in September back to Torbay and in both places I would say 99% of people I have seen have worn them in shops and public transport. I remember more recently anyone I have seen without one (I could count this on one hand) had a lanyard on presumably to explain why they were exempt. I think compliance has been fantastic since they became compulsory and think we should focus on that rather than continue to highlight and exaggerate the tiny minority that do not wear them.

Seconded, assuming by good compliance you mean mouth and nose.

Shouldn’t really be a surprise our rates are such a binfire at the moment really..

Yeah, I don't have any data to report accurately but it's nowhere near 95% on general wearing - perhaps 75% and a huge number, perhaps a third of mask wearers, only wear it over their mouth.
