Im sorry but how the absolute shit has this variant come in from south africa?! Why are we not just closing the borders or at least forcing 10 day quarantine like australia? This variant entering the country from outside europe is completely avoidable and completely unacceptable. Disgrace

How many Tories live in that little Tier 2 area in the middle of the country? Might as well make them the same as the surrounding areas.

It's Rutland, which is part of the constituancy Rutland and Melton, which shockingly is Tory.

Feel like the second new variant is just a way of demonstrating “virus have variants” and take the international eyes off the Dartford one.

For schools, just close them for six weeks until the vulnerable are vaccinated. Children don’t need to lose out as they can reduce Easter holidays from 2 weeks to 1 and summer from 6 weeks to 1. So same number of weeks learning but when it’s safer.

On a side note, I really do not like or have any time for Matt Hancock, and think he’s hardly pretty much this whole pandemic pretty shockingly - but I do think he’s delivered this announcement far more eloquently and less robotic then Boris ever has.

He’s even actually attempted to answer some of the questions he’s been asked too! And not an ‘alas’ to be heard.

And just leave kids with nothing for the next six weeks?

I don’t disagree that schools need to close in some way, but you’re either suggesting no online or in-school learning for those 6 weeks, or you’re suggesting stripping teachers of 6 weeks of their holidays, which definitely wouldn’t go down well (and I’m speaking as a teacher!)

So this south african strain has had whisperings for the past few days - this was not the first I've heard of it. Now almost everything ends up in our newspapers nowadays, but for some reason this has been kept on the fringes until mentioned in this press conference https://www.theweek.in/news/health/2020/12/21/south-africa-claims-new-covid-19-strain-as-uk-grapples-with-faster-spreading-mutation.html and it also ended up in the Express but they count the same.

Now I hope this is the government using it to justify/deflect/whatever because the alternative is not good...

He is easily the least offensive of the lot of them for my pallet. I believe he may actually have something resembling a heart deep down somewhere.

Still a d#ck, though!

Well us Norfolk folk are well and truly peeved... if there was a genuine worry about cases/hospitalisations around here or a full lockdown was needed I’d be more sympathetic but we’ve had some of the lowest rates the whole time in the country. I get it’s about getting ahead of the curve but it doesn’t help that so many livelihoods are being ruined because of this constant stop/start approach

Hancock says he is confident “we will get through this” by the spring.
And people should resist temptation and avoid seeing people whom they don’t need to.

If only the government weren’t so incompetent, I’d feel a bit more positive after hearing that

    • Very different in terms of time of game,  yet remember how excited I was before the first game in Euro 2016 having grown up not sure I would ever see wales in an international tournament. That day scraped a win against Slovakia and was just happy to see wales score and win at a tournament, little did I know we would finish in the top 4. Hope Scottish fans get the same experience.
