I'm enjoying the new series of The Thick of It...

A photocall staged by Matt Hancock backfired this morning when it turned out that the GP surgery he was visiting has not yet benefited from the vaccine rollout he was promoting. Speaking outside the Bloomsbury Surgery in central London, he said:

"It’s great news this morning that the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine gets to all those GP surgeries that like this one can do all the vaccinations that are needed"

He was then confronted by an angry GP, complaining that he didn’t have any and had been waiting some time for a promised delivery.

I've just looked in the 'About' section and the figures for week ending 20 December (week 1) include the wider time period of 8-20 December. Not sure why exactly but at least they didn't halve as it appears.

A grim consequence of improved drugs: 

"There is a common misconception about ventilation and respiratory support. These are not treatments; they simply stop people dying while they hopefully heal. Dexamethasone, the steroid identified as effective at reducing mortality in the Recovery trial, is the single best treatment we have available for Covid. It certainly stops many people dying, but it may not make them better, at least not quickly. This is a large part of our current problem: people who previously died within a few days now need respiratory support for weeks on end. Our mortuary is emptier than it was, but the hospital is much fuller"

That is indeed grim, so treatment approves but soon it seems, no where to give survivors ongoing treatment.

Lol we were joking about this last night. The ridiculous thing is in any scientific laboratory in any country it will look very multi-cultural. Probably as many European scientists in England working on it as well.

There's no obligation to take part so might as well fill in the form, especially if it looks likely for approval and you're not high up the list. They have said that if you're offered an NHS vaccine they'll tell you if you had the placebo or not and how the trial is looking so you can decide to take the Oxford/Pfizer vaccine if you want. 

50% chance of getting a vaccine is better then 0% chance until Autumn.

Given the choice between the AstraZeneca one and one of the new tech ones I'd be more inclined to have the astra one just because of a history of autoimmune disease in the immediate family (three prety severe cases over two people) and I believe that is a legitimate concern and the only thing that can help calm those fears is time.

But obviously I'll take that risk when the time comes if I have to (100% for other people), but I will be asking my GP if that is an option for me.

Im sure someone will call me an irresponsible Anti vaxxer loon of course for even thinking about this...

7 day average down from 663.6 to 645.4 (per 100k).

Still a massive amount of cases per day but another encouraging drop to the 7 day average.

For those who are interested or saw my posts over the last few days, my girlfriend's homeware retailer employer have now predictably succumbed to pressure and allowed head office to work from home for the duration, effective tomorrow. Glad the decision has been made but very, very unnecessary resentment caused among staff for absolutely no reason. A bit like the opening of the schools this Monday!

To be honest, at this stage, I'd take any of them! If push came to shove and I was offered a choice, Pfizer.

Recent convo around a blind vaccination had TD hoping he would have been given the Pfizer shot.  That may have changed with recent updated detail on O/AZ efficacy and dose regimen.
