Like Foals this year I still think Glasto should've took a chance and have them headline the Friday with Radiohead headlining another night.

Kendrick, The XX, Radiohead

In an alternate reality, that's what we'd get. Two exciting up and comers and a legendary, Glastonbury favourite act.

Leeds Arena seems to have screwed you guys well and truly over. Less travelling for me, but not good news for you guys.

Was Sheffield Motorpoint getting good gigs anyway? Leeds is probably nabbing gigs off Birmingham more now.

Bit riskier than Foals. The xx haven't headlined the fests that Foals had before this year and their sophomore was seen as a bit of a drop.

Of course, looking at it now - imaginably after festivals have sorted their headliners - the time off has served the band well and the hype train is picking up pace. People seem a lot more enthused about them now than around Coexist and summer 2013.

Interesting to see people mentioning their headlining prospects. I recall a few people tipping The XX as one of the 'new headliners in the near future' in a thread on here a year or 2 ago. But as Dental says, they probably needed to have headlined some of the smaller festivals already (e.g. Bestival, Latitude).

I'd be all for Glastonbury having that sort of headliner on the Friday every year but I don't know how viable that is for the long-term prospects of the festival.

I think the success of In Colour probably helped and although they don't have the live reputation of Foals they're possibly more popular.

Yeah people in Birmingham complaining about bands skipping their city... In Sheffield we get absolutely naff all these days; you certainly do better than us for the size of your city.

But Birmingham has more than twice the population of Sheffield and is relatively equidistant from all major English cities with no real close competitors other than Wolverhampton and Coventry, both of which have nothing to shout about.

Whereas Sheffield is very close to Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool etc. so you can see why Sheffield might get missed out.

The Civic Hall in Wolvo is disgusted by this comment

Birmingham is about as close to Nottingham (where The xx are playing) as Sheffield is to Leeds, and it's closer to Nottigham than Sheffield is to Manchester or Liverpool.

Fair point on the population being twice the size but I don't think anyone can really complain about Birmingham not getting it's fair share of gigs. In most instances it's the third picked city in England by touring acts.

While this is true, Nottingham is the only city around Birmingham which is relatable to those northern cities I mentioned, and Birmingham is rarely overlooked for Nottingham, the Midlands is generally overlooked as a whole IMO

and Birmingham is lately overlooked for Bristol, Brighton etc.

YouTube's mucked up that video for the new song. I found this one in the comments and it had a proper version.

Same again really. I wanna like it just as I wanted to like On Hold but it doesn't do nowt for me.

Yeah, I'm in a similar boat.  On Hold just hasn't grabbed me (aside from the part where the Hall and Oates sample kicks in).  I do quite like I Dare You though.

There's so much hype behind their comeback! Hopefully we won't have to wait another four years to hear something new from them.

On Hold I think is decent, it surprises me that it's come out so late in the year when I think it might have gathered a tiny bit more steam if it was released in Summer. I'm also hoping they play one or two of Jamie's tracks.

    • Another one from Sheffield DocFest this weekend, Earth Wind & Fire docu, directed by Questlove. Sensational archive footage, contributions from band members, family, plus a lot of very big fans (Stevie, Lionel, Flea, the Obamas) and a warts n all assessment of the genius / flawed human being that was Maurice White. Also, I never realised he started out as a jazz drummer with Ramsay Lewis. Well worth a watch.
