Bowie for Glastonbury.

Loving that Friday line up.

I think the issue with Bowie's gigs in the 90's wasn't the set lists, but how he chose to sing those songs. I saw him play Wembley arena in 1995 and the famous songs were unrecognisable/ terrible. I think the NME described him as 'a mad old badger' in the review of that particular gig. The next year I went to Phoenix 96 and didn't watch Bowie because of his performance the year before. Bjork and the Prodigy were amazing at that festival though and the toliets were the worst I have ever seen.

In 2000 at Glastonbury me and my wife decided to give Bowie another go and that night he was brilliant. Great set list and the songs played like they were on record.

I didn't like Heathen or Reality much. So, for me, it was a brief respite

That's not what you were saying though.

You said his performances werent good in the 90s, but he was good at glastonbury, then you are suggesting the performances went to be being bad again. Which simply isnt the case.

Whether you liked heathen or reality or not, the performances on the reality tour were fantastic.

If you mean The Phoenix festival when Bowie sang on Thursday 18th of July 1996 then I am not surprised as very few people were able to see it - I worked at them all so I was already onsite so I saw the whole concert - was a bit puzzled why it was so quiet { many wandered off after The Prodigy } - I was told later there was some screw up over people arriving but what the specific reason was I don't have a clue as I was miles away from the entrance - between 96 and 97 I must have seen him a good five or six times { all mean fiddler events } so they all merge into one.

There is a few youtube clips although I suspect the ones claiming to be from 1996 is 1997 as the claimed 1996 clips look a lot more crowded than what I remember.

its a shame Vince pulled the plug as I did like working there.

there is a old posting that shows the line up for 1996 so these are not my images

if you recall it was dead Hot that weekend - I know everyone was asking at the bar ' do you have any Ice ? ' - the WBC missed a trick that weekend as they could have made a bomb by selling it in a bag - I used to cool off by lying under the fridge truck when I was not on shift.
when it started in 1993 the plan was to shut down the Arena right after the last band and that caused a lot of problems for security but in later years they kept it open far later.

have a read at http://corben-dallas.blogspot.co.uk/2012/09/blast-from-past-phoenix-festival-1996.html

I got in the crowd to watch the cardigans, and I began to feel a bit funny, just made it to my mates when I passed out completely for an age, waking up to coolio being very loud and bassy. Very hot indeed

A festival where David Bowie, Neil Young, Massive Attack, Bjork, Bis, Kenickie, The Flaming Lips, Frank Black and The Fall were all on the line-up, fucking hell. I clearly wasted my summer of '96, spent all my time finger painting, drinking Sunny D and getting my head stuck in the fence between ours and the neighbours' gardens (trying to stroke their dog).

i was at that Phoenix 96. i remember the heat, my car overheated in the queue to get in resulting in us having to push it into the car park. i hadn't seen the line up in ages until it was posted above. we must have got in ok as we saw the prodigy do that set on the mainstage. i didn't watch Bowie.

Nothings changed so.

Nah a lot of the setlists from way back when are incomplete. A lot of the setlists online are based off what a lot of radio stations broadcast at the time which was usually only part of the set. Or off what MTV or Channel 4 broadcast etc. Pre internet w*nkers. How did we survive?

I loved Phoenix, went twice. Shame glasto doesn't have main stage music for four nights......

I'm quite glad it doesn't, pottering around the site and seeing what's on the small stages and just hanging about with my friends on the Wed & Thurs is my my favourite bit of the fest.
