  1. Sorry to continue veering off topic but this is a very important point. For me as a non-British person living in Britain the NHS and the BBC are absolutely the best of Britain. Sadly the Tories started a culture war against them and is absolutely determined to destroy them and it is only when they are gone that people will realise their worth. Such a shame that so many people fall for the rubbish about them that gets spouted. Yes every large organisation will have examples of things you don't like and a certain percentage of waste but their output is remarkable. Fight for improvements to it by all means but fighting for it to disappear is actively fighting for poorer people in society to have reduced access to culture and the disparity between what the rich and the poor can afford is already at an all time high.

  3. Tbh as much as the BBC can be irritating - services like 6music and BBC Introducing do more for the British music scene than our Government would.

  4. So, who's the Glastonbury headliners gonna be?

  5. For me live music gets a hell of a lot of support from the BBC. Not just from the Radio stations doing concerts and live sessions on a regular basis but from BBC introducing both nationally and locally. I am quite happy with the way that the BBC is funded and would actually be prepared to pay a bit more. What I would want in return for this is less interference from the government of the day.

  10. The licence fee costs about £2.20 a month more than an ad-free Netflix subscription and is definitely not a rip-off for me.

  16. Just got back to Europe from following them around their tour down under - they really are on the form of their lives right now. Setlists are getting mixed up and they just seem to be having so much fun at each show. As somebody who was also disappointed in the 2017 performance, I really expect their slot this summer to go down a lot better - I'd anticipate there's less casuals at the set and the live stuff has just gone up a few notches since then. In particular Eucalyptus, About Today, Smoke Detector, November and Vanderlyle have been so good live on the NZ/Oz tour. High Violet on Sunday was a superb way to finish the tour (and kinda weird to hear Vanderlyle not just sung along by the crowd!).

  17. How sure are we about SZA headlining the Pyramid? If I'm correct we only have 1 source pretending this, right? I'm nog buying it. She has had a LOT of streams recently, but I suppose the vast majority of them comes from the US. She's really not well known in UK or Europe by the average music lover. Just look at the other festivals she's playing in Europe this summer: small ones (We Love Green, Primavera Porto) or mid-sized (Primavera Barcelona). Primavera festivals target a specific market of alternative music fans, a totally different approach than Glasto that targets a way bigger, more diverse audience. Not only is she as a person/artist completely unknown to the average Brit/European, even her songs with >1 billion streams didn't have a lot of airplay on radio stations etc. (I'm Belgian, maybe in the UK she had more airplay). She has 0 festival anthems. Looking at the previous years, that 's a big box to check to headline the Pyramid. Even Lana, who is also really big in terms of streaming and who is headlining other big European festivals, played the Other last year. And on top: for what I know SZA doesn't have a stunning live reputation. So... I really doubt Emily has booked het for Pyramid closing act. Would be a perfect Other headliner, tho. And I'd take her over other rumours as KoL any day. But no, as long as there's no announcement, I don't believe this rumour. Field would be historically empty & BBC won't have a lot of viewers.

  22. It isn't actually in that everyone who works there gets paid so it costs money to run and it is funded from the license fee. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/explainers-51376255 I sadly think the BBC is one of the culture wars that the Tories started. People used to appreciate how great the BBC was and it's one of the few British institutions that is the envy of the world so of course the tories have to try and destroy it. Anyway we'll get confirmation of the headliners this week.

  23. Both those interactions sound fine. However, outside my Glasto family, whenever it comes up that I regularly attend I get the usual banal "who's headlining" or "isn't it always muddy" bollocks. The only exception was 2 young guys in the local pub who had never been able to get tickets and it blew their mind I'd been 10 times. I got them into our ticket gang and last year, they went for the first time. I'm now a legend and always get a free pint if they're in.

  24. it could cost £0.01 per month, the cost is irrelevant - its the fact you have no choice but to pay it.

  25. i don't believe this for a second - it gets worse every year but these days it seems that the main stages are run almost as a BBC reality show. i don't know why they don't just rename it the "BBC Glastonbury Festival" and be done with it. unfortunately, here in the UK, the BBC is already PPV - the only difference is you have no choice in the matter and you have to pay or you'll end up getting some enforcer banging on your door... whether you want to watch the f**king BBC or not.

  26. Fred again is without a doubt one of the most popular dance music artists in the world right now, he is like dance musics best kept secret He is currently on a last minute tour in Australia and played a lat minute gig at the Sydney opera house and they sold out in minutes with 125k people in the que, he then sold out Rod Laver arena (15k capacity) for 3 nights in a row in minutes, then flew to the gold coast for a "pop up dj set" and they sold 35k tickets in an hour If you are not into dance music you may not of even heard of him, but I can guarantee you 100% this guy will draw the biggest crowd for any act at this festival and I would bet money he will produce the best set of the week

  27. Ah yes, of course. Well, acts of that ilk, y'know. Some high energy techno. Not too much, just a few good acts. And here's another one. Stingray on IICON.

  28. It’s a 20,000 capacity venue (so, think O2 London for comparison). Bigger names tend to sell it out instantly (though Coldplay sold out 4 nights at Croke Park instantly!). Typically there’s no crossover with pyramid headliners (The Cure in 2019 and Arctic Monkeys in 2007 are the only ones I can think of that played Malahide and then topped the bill at Glasto later in the week), but there is no pattern! 😁

  35. If they don't announce by 21 March then they have a real issue. The following week is the run up to Easter, people are travelling, seeing family, have holidays booked etc. Their focus won't be on the festival, the announcement could be missed/ignored by many. EDIT: And the longer the announcement is left, the more people will have chosen an alternative festival to attend if their 'full' announcement is already out there.

  44. I really liked the first wave. I can understand the line-up feels cheap in terms of big names, but if we talk about music, I really like the vibe. I don't go to Sziget for the big names, I can understand most people do. Let's wait to see next one
