  2. Obviously horrible news. But I think pointing the finger at Rayner is not only unfair to her, but also serves to help silence critics of the Tories. Don't forget that over the years, BJ's words have been far worse in terms of racism, homophobia etc. and have certainly been as divisive as anything any other politician is responsible for. If an atmosphere of division contributed to this horrible event (and we don't know that it did) then a great number of people, politicians and otherwise, left-and right-leaning, have helped us get there. I think singling out any individual for that is disingenuous.

  3. We don't know the reason, but there's no doubt there is a lot of nasty hate and division out there, amplified by social media, and all political leaders no matter their stripes should be careful of the language they use, and that includes calling tories scum.

  5. Tell that to William Hague and Iain Duncan Smith, the public currently trusts the Tory party more because the Tory party has connected more with voters over the last decade. I don't like it, but moaning that they have it easy is entirely unhelpful. Turning Labour policies into a compelling narrative that connects with voters is the answer, that isn't an easy thing to do but that has to be the aim. Sitting back and bemoaning the public for not realising that the Tories are awful isn't going to fix anything.

  6. What are you basing this on? Checking recent polling the Tories and other right-wing parties (i.e. UKIP and Reform) are still under 50% combined (40+3+4). Whereas progressive parties (not necessarily left-wing, but certainly all considerably to the left of the current Tory govenment; Labour, LDs, Greens, SNP and PC) are on 53% - https://www.politico.eu/europe-poll-of-polls/united-kingdom/ Add to that that 66% of people think that the NHS should be funded by the government based on taxation, and 70% believe it's the sector that the gov should spend more money on (dwarfing the likes of Defence, Crime and Policing and Pensions. 62% of people support (or strongly support) the nationalisation of the railways. The majority of Brits want a progressive goverment. That's what Starmer SHOULD have been doing, but he hasn't. He's gone to war with the left of the party on some terrible advice of those around him. He isn't connecting with the electorate and he isn't building coalitions with the other prgoressive parties. I'm not a Corbynite. Did I like him? Yes. Did I vote for him? No. I'm not sure why Starmer supporters keep bringing him up. It's time to move on and deal with the situation facing you today. Thinking that all Starmer critics are just scorned Corbynistas may help you ignore the obvious regarding his successor but ultimately it's futile if your aim is, as you say, to get rid of the Tories.

  9. Christ. Who ever thought Barry from EastEnders would tread the legendary boards of the Joiners, following in the footsteps of PJ Harvey, Radiohead, Oasis, Coldplay, Ed Sheeran etc. It's my main local venue. Seen hundreds of bands there. Might give that a miss though unless @SighMo fancies it?

  17. The system doesn't help the Tories inherently, the Tories have been better at using the system to their advantage over the last decade, if Labour is to regain power they need to be better at connecting with voters. Whining about the system not being fair won't do that. When you say the Tories have made 5 big mistakes in 18 months what do you mean? There are two big issues in the past 18 months: COVID and Brexit. With COVID most of the public has been pretty lenient on the government as they where dealing with a situation unlike any in our lifetimes, yes there have been mistakes but few that everyone saw coming so it's hard to get too worked up about it. There is of course the giving loads of money to your mates issue, but in general the public think all politicians are bastards so they don't really see that as a party issue. With Brexit most of the public voted for it so just saying it's a terrible idea doesn't convince. Labour needed to set out what a Labour Brexit would have looked like, how it protected things the Brexit voters wanted "sovereignty" or whatever but also didn't lead to some of the problems we are seeing now. Until Labour become a voice for a positive version of Brexit not just complaining about it they won't win back Brexit voters. Other than those two issues where you seem to be out of step with the population at large where is the huge cataclysmic fuck up that everyone is ignoring? Afghanistan? Essentially the US's problem. Gas crisis? Prisicesly why we have the price cap to protect households. Social care? A time bomb that is very much getting worse on the Tories watch but they have at least made some sop to raising taxes despite howls of despair from their own backbenches. The Tories are shits and life for many people gets harder under their rule whilst those at the top get richer but the idea that they have crashed the bus is just wrong for most people. Until you understand that you will never win the argument.

  19. The tories have the advantage of being in government and controlling the messaging, and Bojo knows how important this is from his time in the media. So, they'll just come out and say that the hgv driver shortage is necessary as businesses adjust and start paying more and providing better conditions for drivers, and the media puts this out before it is analysed...so they make it as almost part of the plan, a necessary pain before the promiseland. They will say we're going to level up, with out being specific what that actually entails, and that is the message that goes out. They say they will get brexit done, and people think it's done, except it isn't of course. He may be a twat, but Johnson is actually pretty bloody good at this politics thing.

  20. I'll quite happily concede that I'm giving Starmer a hard time at the moment, certainly compared to Johnson. But that's because I genuinely care about the Labour Party and want them to do well. I hate this incarnation of the Tory party, it's the lowest I've ever seen them go, but I don't know what else I can say about that. Whereas with Starmer/Labour, I see a guy who I was happy to get elected to leader, perform so miserably. He's never going to be PM, so therefore he needs to go, sooner the better.

  21. It's just my observation. From (most ) Newcastle fans you get 5000 words how bad Ashley is, 3000 on Bruce and a sentence that the Saudis are a bit dodgy. The Newcastle fans are definitely complicit in the sportswashing and it's right that is called out. They went mad when Wonga were investing in the club, but now have been bought off. I hope the media continue to call this out. When the Newcastle FC pride group talk crap about how it may ultimately help gay people in Saudi Arabia then Iost for words. My fear is when the football starts it will be forgotten. I would react the same if it was any clubs fans, so don't think the targeting is correct.

  24. The singer said he accepted there would be backlash about some of their activities, such as continuing to fly on private jets. "I don't mind any backlash at all," he said. "We're trying our best, and we haven't got it perfect. Absolutely. We always have backlash for everything. "And the people that give us backlash for that kind of thing, for flying, they're right. So we don't have any argument against that." Taken from the BBC article about the tour announcement. Pretty much self-parody at this point. If they really wanted to change the way that they and other bands your, then actually change it. Be the first big band to minimise their stage show, travel commercially, plan a tour that's vastly reduced in carbon omissions, even if it takes twice as long. Instead it's just gimmicks and empty platitude, be better if they just shut up about it and carried on as normal, rather than indulging in smug, self-congratulatory back slapping for actually doing next to fuck all. Laughable how their eco-tour plans rely on the audience doing all the work cos they can't be fucked to do it themselves and make any actual, tangible sacrifices.

  27. Not doing this specifically for G but I’m using it as an initial target, I’m seeing a personal trainer 3 times a week and cycling 2 times a week. I’m approaching the heart attack years( late 40s, early 50s) and I’ve spent the last 25 years overweight to varying degrees so figure it’s now or never. Ultimate target is to be a racing snake in 4 years when we are selling up and going travelling. I’m healthy now, I don’t do sick, but the weight and lifestyle will eventually catch up with me if I don’t get rid of it now.

  30. Chris and the lads are consumate professionals and as far as I know, have never dialed-in a show, and that's hugely important as I'd imagine it's difficult not to as part of a mammoth world tour. I'm a little surprised at the level of vitriol towards them on here because surely they've lived the ultimate Glastonbury dream, from punters to headliners. Musical content aside, they get the festival, promote the organisation at every opportunity, buy into its charitable ethos and support the Eavis family. Without doubt they have played no small part in contributing to where the festival finds itself today. And I for one respect that.

  33. I mean that is kind of a shit argument made by that Ryan twitter tit. Arguing that Johnson was being reckless by allowing all restrictions to be eased when cases were still rising is very different to saying we are facing a difficult winter because of other govt actions. Just because Starmer who was listening to scientific advise may have called it wrong this summer does not mean he shouldn't call out other risks going forward.

  36. These beautiful boys and girls just don't miss, and this looks to be one of the weaker songs on the album if anything. I wouldn't have picked this as the lead single to be honest. They've already scooped up my AOTY this year, and if the tracks on the new one are anything like the bootlegs of live versions I've been listening to on repeat, it's got the biggest shot at AOTY next year as well. Some of the new tracks remind me of Arcade Fire in the best way possible, and wouldn't look out of place on Funeral. They've got some great stuff coming, and Basketball Shoes is going to be their answer to Slint's, Good Morning, Captain. I think they're amazing, they were my first gig back and I've got tickets to seem them twice in December and might have to look at that Albert Hall date in April. I've pre ordered the signed record, even though I don't have a record player. I feel like it's going to be a classic, and a defining record in my life. Exciting times.
