Live gigs - Who you've seen were they good, bad etc.

Yard Act last night - excellent.

 

Half of the set was new stuff, brave move.

James tonight at Bristol O2. Such a privilege to see them at a small venue as a warmup for their arena tour. I realised today that it's 40 years since I first saw them in 1986 & they played a song from that first time (Johnny Yen). Typical James, they didn't play all the hits, but I loved hearing a bunch of songs I'd never heard live before. They played a couple of new songs that were amazing & had me salivating for their next album! Fantastic night.

My Bloody Valentine were excellent from the Royal Albert Hall arena floor on Friday, my first time seeing them an amazing aural experience!

 

Chvrches supported and did a nice short set, weird they did the Robert Smith song with him in attendance, but not singing his part.

Indeed, that is an unusual development.

 

Still, I really like Chvrches so I'm hoping the new album is coming soon and that it's awesome.

Totally agree a very good night. I thought the Placebo set was amazing, a rare treat of them playing lots of old material.

Amazing set from Wolf Alice at Royal Albert Hall - Ellie’s vocals sounding incredible and they really made use of the venue and played some songs they don’t usually as well as all the big favourites. It felt special and different from the big venues I’ve seen them at before (Pyramid, Other and O2). Loved how personal it was with her childhood music teacher coming on at one point to play.  Last Man on the Earth with only an organ accompanying sounded quite different. Lovely evening 🙌 (Finsbury Park next)

Mandy, Indiana supported by Buffee on Friday at Brudenell. 

 

Mandy, Indiana were excellent and were surprised they got asked for an encore (1st time apparently).  Buffee was 50/50 on- some tracks really liked some didn't grab me.

Am a big fan of Ben de la Cour.  Saw him three times this week on his Irish tour.  He is heading over to the UK.  I reckon he is up there with Townes Van Zandt and Leonard Cohen when it comes to songwriting.

I've been working hard since the back end of last year, and I'm now on the DJ circuit.

 

Played my first gig at the weekend, it went pretty well. Have another this weekend.

James last night in Glasgow, really good gig and crowd interaction by Tim. The rest of the band were great, best I’ve heard them instrumentally.

Support act was Doves.

+ Masayoshi Takanaka was absolutely outstanding at Brixton last week on his second night. Blue Lagoon, Brasilian Skies and Jumping Take Off in particular all delightful, and he's clearly got a way with crowd interactions, even amid the language barrier. Threw a snatch of Williams' Raiders March in there for good measure. If there's still tickets for his Crystal Palace show later this year, would heartily recommend.

 

+ Godspeed You! Black Emperor were surprisingly soporific last night in Leeds, and played a little less than I expected. No matter - still was a terrific show of tone and mood. Glad to finally have them off the list.

James at Liverpool Arena last night. They are so good live, the songs build and build to quite the sonic crescendo, Tim was in good form, his wander about took him to the back of the arena, he was in the crowd for three songs.

 

Doves provided support, it isn't the same without Jimi on vocals, but they still put on a good show.

Saw an indie band called Feet in Milton Keynes last night. I was kinda so-so about their recorded stuff but live, it really did gel well. Was a good performance by them so I'm happy I went.

 

Big reason I went is because one of my friends was the support act. Guy is called Charlie Vaughan, who I'd seen in a few acts before. I thought he was pretty good - sound structures and vocal harmonies were all on point. Though I may not have picked the best standing position as I was by the big amp stack on the bass player's side so just mainly heard the bass.

Saw them in Glasgow on Wednesday enjoyed them as ever . Liverpool set list looks a bit stronger than Glasgow.  Big fan of curse curse glad to see it got an airing .

Agree totally on doves I thought they were good but jimi is such a loss vocally and personally to them . Hope he's back at some point if/when he's ready .

Picked up a very late ticket to Art School Girlfriend good gig in the always decent Gorilla they started slow and got dancier as the gig went on.

I saw Joshua Idehen last night at Electric Bristol (formerly SWX). I'd wanted to catch him for a while and it exceeded all expectations - proper showmanship and genuine connection with the crowd. 10/10

He's fantastic, isn't he! I saw him supporting Baxter Dury end of last year. Looking forward to seeing him again soon.

His 3pm Thursday set at Greenpeace was our group's highlight of Glastonbury last year. Completely uplifting and wonderful way to start the festival. Got tickets to see him again later this year
