It was great!  Stage setup not as good as the slow rush tour, but I loved every minute 😎

Great show today from Yard Act in the Brudenell car park with support from Phil Jupitus. 

 

Played the new album and a few old well known ones. 

 

Free as well.

I did them in Birmingham on Sat, first time seeing them live and what an experience it was. Felt like i was at a rave for a lot of it, the lazers and light show were amazing. Can certainly see how they would smash Other headline slot if given again!

sort of reminds me of the time i saw Dumpys Rusty Nuts playing on a flatbed trailer in a car park in Enfield (many moons ago...)

Also saw Tame Impala over the weekend, was brilliant and def plan on going again next tour

Took a punt on Florence Road last night to see if the slight hype that is building around them is well placed and I have to say......(dramatic pause)........ It is well placed.   They were excellent than band themselves remarking how happy they were to have sold out  Manc Academy 2  (900 capacity if your wandering).  so soon after playing to 100 people in Manchester a few months earlier.  (google tells me this was the deaf institute).

 

The band still dont have an album and one EP and a couple of singles to there name though tracks like the closing double one Break the Girl and Storm Warnings we're treated by the crowd like returning old favourites with the biggest reactions of the night going to the ballad like Rabbit's Cant Swim -   New songs were welcomed by the crowd all night.

 

I suspect the experience of supporting O-Rod has won them quite a few followers as-well - Im sure they will make at least the next step up in venue sizes with relative ease - especially after their busy festival season.

 

All in all a very accomplished confident performance from a relative new comer - definitely see them if you get the chance.

Agree - the Furries were really, really good! 

 

Can't say the same about the awful Arena, though. Couldn't see anything and the sound there isn't great.

 

So looking forward to seeing them properly at EoTR.

It’s a funny old arena - about half the capacity of most, and with relatively few permanent seats. I’ve been many times and never had a particular issue with the sound, although have heard it said by others. It won’t be an issue for much longer though with a new, larger, arena currently being built near Cardiff Bay, and no doubt the Utilita will be pulled down so they can erect more office blocks.

Yeah RAH on Wednesday was special, I've never been a hardore fan but both my birth parents were really into him, so mostly went in their memory. He knocked it out of the park though, SoS solo to close was haunting.

Ratboys at The Garage - absolutely love this band having discovered them quite recently. Listened to their new album loads and now I’ll go back and listen to their earlier stuff. Fantastic!

Had a very enjoyable time at the Radio 1 Big Weekend Friday and Saturday! While I'm not the biggest dance music fan, Friday was very enjoyable with Fatboy Slim absolutely terrific as the headliner - what a show! Fisher, MK and Sonny Fodera were all entertaining too - Fisher bringing out Tones and I was a choice but she sounded great considering how dreadful Dance Monkey is. 

 

A brief rundown of everyone I saw Saturday:

• Zara Larsson - was baffled by her booking as a headliner initially but she absolutely put on a show. Excellent live vocals, very charismatic stage presence and didn't let the energy come down once. Also very fun to hear the likes of Lush Life and Symphony live as I remember hearing them all the time when I was younger.
• Lola Young - ended 20 minutes earlier than her set was planned for but was very good for the time she had. Very lowkey set from her but her vocals are outstanding. Plus I got to meet her briefly after James Blake and she was very nice!
• Nothing But Thieves - first time seeing them and really enjoyed their set! Starting the set with Amsterdam and playing Overcome halfway through were choices but Conor sounded excellent and the band were in very good form.
• James Blake - the set of the day for me. Tent was half full as everyone was waiting for Zara but he was exceptional. Few technical difficulties but nothing can stop how excellent his vocals are. Getting to hear a lot of his new album plus the likes of Limit To Your Love and Retrograde from the front was fantastic. Plus Lola as a special guest was great to see!
• Mitski - only caught a brief part of her set because the tent was rammed but really liked what I saw. Very capitivating presence on stage and her live band were excellent! Ethereal vocals as expected!
• Erin LeCount - despite only having 30 minutes, really great start to the day! She had loads of diehard fans down the front even at 12.30. Excellent vocals and loved how she constructed most of her set through loops. I do expect to see her getting bigger and bigger.
• Florence Road - one of my most anticipated sets of the day and they did not disappoint. Definitely one of the most exciting up and coming bands working, Lily is a fantastic vocalist and the band as a whole sounded brilliant, would love to see a headline show of theirs soon!
• MUNA - been a fan of these guys for a few years now so was delighted to see them live finally! Despite Katie having a cold, she sounded superb and Josette and Naomi brought so much fun energy and kept hyping up the crowd. One of the most fun and carefree crowds I've been in at a festival, so much positivity and fun from these guys. Really hope they tour soon because I'd certainly love to see them again!
• Rachel Chinouriri - another artist who I didn't see their full set but Rachel was brilliant for the time I saw her! She was overcome with emotion after the first song and seemed so delighted to be there and the crowd more than reciprocated that. Really really charming show from her!
• Wasia Project - the biggest surprise of the day. Didn't know a lot of their music but was blown away! A lot of genre changes in their music but they made it all work! Olivia sounded terrific and was backed up by an excellent band!

 

Also briefly caught parts of Skye Newman and Ellie Goulding and both were enjoyable for the very short time I caught them. Overall, a really excellent time considering how much I was underwhelmed by the lineup! Would love to see Florence Road, Erin, MUNA, Rachel and Wasia Project all on the Woodsies stage next year!

The music the messages the graphics the art of it all is spellbinding.

Good to hear. Off to see them in Sheffield on Friday. Think this will be 6th time I've seen them over the years.

Not a massive fan, but we were in  Boston this weekend and got behind the stage up in the gods seats for Springstein - was enjoyable. He's a great musician and watching Tom Morello also added to the experience. Due to the political nature of the show, it was interesting to see it in the States as opposed to in the UK. Very good none the less.

One ive been waiting for a while to see finally came up last night in the form of the magnificent Big Theif, My second visit to Factory International/Aviva Studios - I am now 100% convinced it is Manchesters best venue, even though in the heat it was a little Sweaty in there.   

 

Big Thief were great - This gig coming just under a year since the last  album (double Infinity) came out, and quite surprisingly given it was the album that kicked of the tour they only played 2 songs from it, with Los Angeles a particularly noticeable absence.  Instead it perhaps felt like a preview of what is to come next with 6 new songs featured.  Still some absolute highlights for me included Masterpiece, Simulation Swarm, Vampire Empire and of course the absolute tune that is Not!

 

However overall it was sadly not the best gig for me, the venue was great, the band were great but....  the third element the crowd were sadly awfull.  A medical emergency could not be helped perhaps unsurprising given the heat, but had to relocate 4 times due excessive patched of gig talking,  A guy who was so pissed he had to be carried out after being too pissed to stand up, as well as quite a lot of general irritability  maybe not surprising in the heat, but ive been to hotter gigs and it hasn't been this bad.  A few attempts by Arienne Lenker to get the crowd to sing the missing words were met with relative silence - most notable during Paul, she certainly did her best to inspire the crowd though the gig. 

 

luckily I managed to finish the gig making my way into a patch of the crowd on the front left that generally seemed to be enjoying the band they had paid to see so it was alright in the end.
