Birkenhead Punk Festival at the weekend, an enjoyable couple of days with mainly lesser known acts. A few great performances but also a lot of average to awful. All adds to the fun.

 

Best stuff was The Indestructibles, Dead Raze, Spam Javelin, Stuntface and Random Hand.

 

The downside was the sound in the bigger venue, the snare drum was overpowering everything and the sound guy seemed to like it that way. When the bigger acts turned up with their own sound engineers, it was no longer a problem, so ut was clearly him.

As above, saw Duran Duran last night at BST, I thought they were brilliant and certainly still have it, Le Bon sounded great. Banger after banger, they have such a huge back catalogue of hits, the two hours flew by

 

Would love to see them at Glasto soon, they would go down really well. The only question is where would they fit, would love to see them in the Legend slot, that would be an insane Sunday afternoon singalong of hit after hit and they would attract an enormous crowd, it would come across brilliantly on the TV coverage. But they could still easily justify a headline set in my opinion. One of the very few bands who could still fill either slots...

Saw ho99o9 and the absolutely batshit insane Violent Magic Orchestra in Brighton on friday night - seen the first band a few times, twice at glastonbury as it happens, and they were their normal mix of hip hop/punk/electronic and were properly good. But i knew what i was getting into with seeing them! 

VMO were a very different thing - hard to describe, but kind of cold norwegian black metal mixed with techno gabba breakdown craziness - it felt like the whole audience had a big smile on their faces while also not knowing what to do with themselves 😀 euphoric and atmospheric, but when i stream their songs it doesnt even have 10% of the visceral impact of them live. Holy hell, that would go down amazingly in the SE corner in the wee small hours . . . . very much one to watch!

I saw The Cure last Sunday and KOL last Monday in Belfast at outdoor gigs. 

 

Sunday was one of the best gigs I've been to and I'm still playing the cure every time I get in my car and telling everyone. Real mixed crowd and it seemed EVERYONE was loving it. 

 

One minor complaint for both gigs (uncontrollable and unfixable) but with the super bright nights here this time of day the whole show was in complete daylight. (For reference I'm it's not dark ATM until 11pm or so) 

I felt this ruined some atmosphere for the cure definitely and it looked like KOL had plenty of strobes etc but it was so bright you could only notice if you looked at the lighting rig 🫣

Last minute trip to see Kings of Leon last night in Leeds (my first ever time) and had a great time! Seen them the last 2 years in a row so wasn’t particularly fussed about seeing them again for a while but my best mate wanted to go because he’s never seen them so I figured I’d tag along for his second ever gig. The band were on really excellent form last night and it does seem they’re incredibly rejuvenated  - even when Caleb admitted later in the night he was losing his voice he sounded excellent. While I missed out on the likes of Arizona and The Face that had made some recent setlists, getting to finally hear Four Kicks, Radioactive and Black Thumbnail was excellent. 
 

The Snuts were also enjoyable as the support. Having missed them a bunch of times last year, the wait I’d say was worth it. The sound was quite quiet for them from the back of the arena meaning I couldn’t understand the vocals the best but the band were still on very solid form. Overall, a very enjoyable evening and onto Wolf Alice this Sunday!

Went to the Castlefield Bowl on wednesday as managed to get a couple of freebies to Wet Leg and English Teacher -   had out of country friends visiting and this is the gig they really wanted to see.    Was massivly more interested in the support act personally -  English Teacher played a new song heavy set - so probably a sign album 2 is getting closer -   as good as album 1 is - it had a rather heavy live showing over the last couple of years and maybe time for some new songs.

 

Then Wet Leg a band ive caught a couple of times across the years the main difference i notice with the expanded line up  singer Rhian Teasdale rarely touched a guitar in the set and focused more on dancing around the stage it did make the performance a lot more dynamic - songs from the second album have started to hit harder now.  to my surprise Manetout now the big finish not Chaise longe,  probably not the kind of thing i normally like but  I think they are certainly a guilty pleasure band for me. 

 

A lot of people will hate them and I get that, but there popularity i think is still yet to peak

Maccabees at Alexandra Palace Park last night was everything I'd hoped it would be. I haven't managed to catch them since their return but this felt like a full circle moment and special show. Great support as well from White Lies and Westside Cowboy.

Self Esteem at York Museum Gardens last night. Superb as always, I've seen the show before for A complicated Woman, but it still packs a huge punch. She was emotional too, cried a couple of times. I'll see it again for one last time end of August when she supports Pulp, and can't wait!

The Big Moon - my first time seeing them and I don't really know their songs, very polished musically, but perhaps felt a little safe after the energy brought by the first two acts.

 

Moonchild Sanelly - fantastic, bonkers in a good way, and the crowd knew a lot of her songs (possibly from earlier support slots with Self Esteem), so much singing along.

 

Joshua Idehen - an absolute delight as always, his set is so joyful and infectious! Booking for his headline tour in the Autumn.

The Cribs in Leeds last night... I feel broken this morning and wasn't even in the gigantic mosh pit 😂 It was incredible! They are playing at their best, and to a good-natured home crowd that makes for something special. 

 

Supports were Lottery Winners, Sherlocks and Ellur (who I missed due to the usual Google magical mystery tour getting into Leeds). Sherlocks were solid if unexciting. Lottery Winners are finally starting to grow on me, and I really enjoyed them. 

 

Also enjoyed Millenium Square as a venue, the uphill slope from the stage really helps with sight lines. Sound was great, food and beverage ok, toilets really good!

Friday - MCR @ Wembely - Good. Though the gap between the Black parade album set and the rest was too long (maybe 10-15 mins) but second set was spot on. I'm not a huge MCR fan but I though the theatrics were a bit hammy tbh and didnt really add muchbut the music and atmosphere was great.

 

Saturday  - Iron Maiden @ Knebworth - cracking day. Hot, cider fuelled and watching 2 minutes to midnight while being upside down on the spinning Red Devil thing and seeing the whole crowd far and wide is something I will never forget! Transport to and from the site was however shocking - 2 hours to get in by shuttle bus due to traffic (may have been an accident) and no shuttle back meaning a 1 hour walk back to Stevenage. If this is going to be the case for Oasis next summer I'll be going to Heaton Park!

Wolf Alice at Exhibition Park last night were really excellent! Ellie is such an incredible presence on stage and her vocals were absolutely phenomenal, how she manages to go from the quieter, heartfelt songs like Gospel Oak and The Last Man on Earth to screaming her head off at Yuk Foo and You’re a Germ is remarkable. Theo was also excellent at hyping the crowd up at every song and seemed like he was having the time of his life. Also getting to hear their short but sweet rendition of Smells Like Teen Spirit was a joy and the crowd lapped it up. I really do think they should be headlining R&L at a minimum in the next few years, they are absolutely sensational.

 

Keo and Cliffords were also excellent support acts. After hearing so much about Keo as one of the exciting new bands in the indie scene, I must say live they definitely lived up to the hype. Really terrific and powerful stage energy from the lads and I wouldn’t be shocked to see them exploding once their debut album comes out. Very reminiscent of Wunderhorse but that is absolutely not a bad thing in my book. Cliffords also really delivered in their short support time, Iona Lynch is a force of a singer and her and the band really brought it. I’d love to see those guys getting bigger because they were excellent. Overall, a really brilliant evening of music!

System of a Down were incredible on Monday.  One of the best gigs I've ever been to.  If it wasn't for the football tonight I'd have been very tempted to buy tickets again for show 2.  First proper big stadium rock concert for my son and he loved it.

I went to QOTSA / SOAD last night. 

It was always going to be a dilemma on whether to go after I learned it clashed with the semi-final, but after the bum fight to get tickets I wasn't not going to go and I would have been more pissed off to have both missed the gig and watch England loose. 

 

It was a great show. It has to of been one of the best times I've seen QOTSA for a very long time (up there with their Brixton shows way back when).

 

SOAD lived up to my high expectations and there was a great atmosphere around. Nice comradery with everyone around me checking the scores etc. Appreciated the intro to Cigaro to try and boost morale when it came through England were out! 

 

Overall I would say it was up there with gig of the year and another band ticked off the bucket list.

Rush at the United Center, Chicago. Anika has been superb sitting in for the late Neil Peart on drums - she absolutely smashed it on Tom Sawyer. Geddy’s had singing training and sounds better than he has for decades. Amazing setlist too; they’ve got 4 different ones on rotation and each on is a must see for fans. Roll on Europe 2027

Pulp at the Royal Festival Hall tonight. They played More in full but interestingly Jarvis gave anecdotes, power point presentations and played demo's between songs. A rather novel way to do a full album show and made it seem extra special and personal, which it was as you will not get many chances to see Pulp in a "relative smallish venue".

 

They had a string section and pulled Wickerman out of the closet and we were treated to a great cover of Abba's The Day Before You Came. They finished on Something Changed, a trully wonderful show, my only criticism is that maybe a few more bangers at the end would have been nice like Common People, Sorted for E's & Wizz, Disco 2000 etc but then if they did it would just have been just another Pulp show. I left feeling I had been to a real one off show.

Friday- CMAT and Katy J Pearson. I was impressed with Katy, not really listened to her before. She's a good pairing with CMAT, complimentary style. CMAT was crazy as always, and she did a fantastic cover of Wuthering Heights!

 

Saturday - David Byrne and Anna Calvi. What can I say - totally outstanding show from David. The stage was 3 sides of video walls, and I'm sure you've seen clips of the show. Phenomenal creativity, choreography and musicianship, and those songs! I instantly wanted to see it again, on a big cinema screen or in a theatre so I could absorb all of the details without tall people in the way 😂 Anna I've not seen live in over 15 years. As ever, she demonstrated great guitar skills and vocals, and David came on for a duet of Strange Weather.

Been at the excellent Godney Gathering this weekend here in the shire. Was amazing to have been able to do a dj set in the silent disco. 
Best acts of the weekend Land of the Giants, Revolution Roots, Fun Loving Criminals and the excellent Rhythm of the Nineties.

Would highly recommend this festival for next year. £50 for a weekend ticket, £12.50 a night per adult camping with views of Glastonbury Tor and £5 a pint, £7 a pint of cocktail 😉

Great day at We Are Wirral Festival yesterday. I'll be honest, my expectations were low but it was well organised, the sound was really good, food and drink options were good. The Coral headlined and were head and shoulders above everyone else, but still enjoyable sets from The Lotery Winners, Hard-Fi and Thrill Collins. Would go back, but not today because the line-up is rubbish.
