Live gigs - Who you've seen were they good, bad etc.

Just back from a drive around Nevada, Utah and Arizona. Caught a couple of gigs in Vegas:

 

Santana at the House of Blues. Surely they’d kill it at Glasto. Tailor made for West Holts. Great to catch them in a intimate venue.

 

Motley Crue at Dolby Live. Wasn’t particularly looking forward to this (not a band I listen to voluntarily), but they were very entertaining, helped by keeping the setlist short and doing a medley of covers (Ramones/Beastie Boys etc).

Patti Smith at The Palladium last night. 50th anniversary of Horses. Absolutely amazing. Stripped back production no light show even. It was all the better for it. She was totally brilliant. The only downside was Mr Depp coming on for the last song

The Last Dinner Party live tonight at Circuit for their album launch (comes out Friday). Lots of fun and the band clearly having a brilliant time. Played their new album in full and it sounds great live. This Is The Killer Speaking is SUCH a tune!

Panic Shack @ the foundry tonight in Sheffield.

 

Hadn't heard of them, someone on here said they were excellent live on the tours thread.

 

They were right! Really f**king right. Great gig. Thanks to whoever that was!

Ryder The Eagle at Gullivers in Manchester last night. Absolutely incredible. Didn't want it to end.

Bit of a stress full period of time - so needed to go to a gig - luckily quite a few good options this week so for £20!!!!  (i love you twickets).  I found my way to the Nova Twins gig at the Ritz lastnight.

 

second gig in a row 10/10.  Fantastic show full of energy some of the new songs were received fantastically well particularly NOVA that became a very involving audience participation piece and Glory that was the last song.

 

Choose your fighter saw the twins in the middle of the crowd and support acts HotWax and Ashaine White on stage in their place - Its still the sets big moment though Antagonist runs it a close second.   Only track from the first album was the well received Taxi.

 

Generally one of the funnist rock gigs ive been to. 

 

Missed Ashaine White sadly but from final 30 secs - but caught all of HotWax who went down very well - and certaily won some new fans in the process.  Its actually my 3rd or maybe 4th time seeing them as a support act.  Their album Hotshock earlier in the year came out quietly but is well worh a listen.

 

The main conclusion i walked away with that given for £20 i caught to great bands -  and I rated the gig at 10/10 it is starting to seem absolutely pointless playing big money for a big arena gig in my head at least.

They are playing Manchester tonight and would have been my second chcoice for a random gig this week - if i had not lucked in on the Nova Twins ticket yesterday.

Scott Lavene at Kazimier Stockroom in Liverpool last night.

 

He's a really engaging performer, just him on guitar/piano with a drum machine and loop pedals to keep the rhythm going. Kind of melancholic singer songwriter stuff, but very funny.

 

Support was from local lad Paul Nazole, really impressive stuff from him, ably backed by a fella on harmonica, I'll be keeping an eye out for him in future.

Love Hawley and his band. Always a great live experience. Finally get to see the Coles Corner show in December, after battling through the absolute scrum for tickets for Sheffield City Hall earlier this week. 2 nights pretty much sold out in minutes.

They are the best fun live! Gutted to miss the Foundry gig due to flying back from holidays. Yellow Arch earlier in the year was total chaos (in a good way!) 😂 

 

Very much hoping they will be on the Superstruct festivals roster again next year.

Little Simz at the Co-op Live on Thursday. Been a fan since I discovered Sometimes I Might Be Introvert on NME’s best albums of 2021 list so it’s been a long time coming! You could absolutely tell she was so humbled and having the time of her life for her first ever UK arena show, the energy didn’t get dragged down once and the crowd around me was having a brilliant time! Thief, Venom, Woman and Gorilla had the entire place bouncing in particular! Lonely was also a really beautiful moment with Simz saying how she doesn’t like performing it because it reminds her of the hard times making the new album and the crowd responded overwhelmingly! An excellent live performer and her band were absolutely on it too, she absolutely deserves this level!

 

Greentea Peng was also great as the support. Missed her Glasto set from this year but an incredible voice and her and her band were very tight-knit! Overall an absolutely brilliant time!

was at The O2 for her London show and have to agree with everything you said. Great show, great band. Little Simz should be headlining El Pointi in the next couple of years.  Greentea Peng was great too, super tight band.

Went to Self Esteem's homecoming gig at Sheffield Arena tonight. Took both the kids (my youngest's first non-festival show) and we all loved it, just utter joy from start to end.

 

And an 8 year old's description of twerking ("I don't know what that is but she is definitely looks like she's having fun") will stay with me for a while

Self Esteem, with Nadine Shah and Moonchild Sanelly at Sheffield Arena tonight. What a show! All three were incredible in their own way.

Biffy Clyro - O2 Academy Oxford Tuesday 14-Oct and Thursday 16-Oct Prospect Building Bristol

 

2 intimate unplugged gigs with Biffy Clyro last week. Both in venues that would be deemed big for some of the bands I'm currently seeing a lot of, but small for a band the size of Biffy. Proved so popular that they had to book matinee slots for all venues across this tour, so each night was only a 45 minute set, which was slightly disappointing, but still worthwhile seeing them so up close and personal given the price. Managed to get to the barrier on the second night, which is going to be highly unlikely when seeing them in arenas next year. 

Was a nice little setlist both nights. They varied the early one to the latter one slightly, but the beauty of the Prospect building in Bristol is, which we didn't realise at the time, we could hear everything pretty clearly from outside, so whilst we couldn't see, we at least got to hear the tracks we didn't see early on both days as we'd got there early enough for some food and drinks beforehand! Very much looking forward to future gigs at the Prospect should they come up for bands I like.

Beach Bunny at Albert Hall, Manchester. Very disappointed overall. Not really the bands fault but the sound mixing was awful. First guitar kick was genuinely painfully loud. Couldn't hear a word of the vocals afterwards, got better as the show progressed but still pretty poor throughout. I'm not the type to pick up on sound problems either but even I couldn't ignore how bad it was here.

 

Other issue was the crowd. Dead all night. Band even commented on it. Wondered why 70% of the people were there as they didn't seem to know a single song or appear to even like what they were hearing. Worst of all, had a middle aged couple in front of me who seemed only to be there to chaperone their adult looking daughter (?), who then pushed forward towards the front while they stayed back to spend the entire gig talking into each others ear, which was extremely irritating as they were directly in my sight line. Was like being at a cinema with people talking in front of you. Why bother coming, or at least stand at the back if you just want to talk through the gig. 
 

Shame cause I enjoy the band's music a lot and it was my first time seeing them. Hope to catch them again down the road to redeem tonight because it was a 5/10.

Went to see Helloween last night in Hammersmith and they great as ever. A terrific career spanning set, lots of fun, loads of singing along and a great set up. All good.

 

Beast in Black were supporting. Third time I've seen them in such a slot, and it's probably the first time I grew tired of their shtick.

Do they have many gigs there? I wasnt aware of this one i must admit!

The Divine Comedy at Swansea Arena. With it being a Saturday night, the audience needed very little encouragement to get out of their seats. As always, Neil’s a great performer although he f**ked up the first verse of Absent Friends which related to actor Jean Seberg. Rather than start again he told us to look her up on Wikipedia 😁

Managed to bag a ticket to see Gurriers last night at Where Else in Margate.  150 capacity, basically a sweaty basement in a bar.

 

Funny place, didn't even have to show my ticket to anyone to get in.

 

Saw them at Glastonbury and they had a decent crowd then so was surprised to see them playing such a small venue.

 

Well worth the trip though

They blew the roof of the place in Birmingham saturday gone. I saw them exactly 1 month ago supporting Kneecap too. Not even a band I listen to on record, but phenomenal live
