First post-festival season gig on Wednesday - Red Rum Club at the Boiler Shop in Newcastle. Saw the lads supporting Blossoms last October and really enjoyed them so had to get a last minute ticket. Thoroughly enjoyable show, lots of fun energy going round the crowd and the band were genuinely thrilled to be playing there and it showed. Definitely will be seeing lots more from them in the future! Also got to meet Fran the singer by chance after the show and he was incredibly nice!

 

Brogeal were also terrific as the support act, I wasn’t too familiar with them when I saw them at TRNSMT but I really enjoyed them this time. The lads were also incredibly nice when I talked to them at the merch table, hopefully will be getting to a show of their own very soon!

Just coming here to write something positive about Lola Young.  

I saw her do a short set and interview on tuesday.  absolutely stunning as always.  

 

Last night she played as part of a festival here in new york and I wasn't there, but read (and saw) that she passed out on stage towards the end of her show.  The comment section is absolutely vile, saying things like "it's always something with that girl" "maybe it's pre-diabetes" "I don't think shes cut out for this", "hootin and hollerin and fallin over" etc etc 

then i see her story on instagram where she says she's taking the next day off, and to please give her another chance. 

it absolutely breaks my heart.  

I cant remember the last time I saw someone as talented as her, who tried so hard and put in so much effort.  maybe she's pushing herself too hard?  maybe its the label?  maybe it's none of our business.  but I do know that I am astounded at how many people would go purposely out of their way to kick someone when they're down.  It's the internet i suppose, I shouldnt be surprised at how mean people are.  

anyway instead of engaging the trolls I just wanted to write something positive about her on the internet

Hadn’t had a proper chance to give his new album a listen, but it sounded great and he’s still an absolute legend with a very talented band backing him up.

Self Esteem. 10/10.     Moonchild Sanley in support put out one of the best support slots ive seen in recent history as well as joining SE for In Plain Sight,  despite saying she was not feeling very well,  I think she pulled out of the next date.  

 

SE - absolutely killed in - having seen her before this year i was a floating voter on her and made the late decision to catch her at Glastonbury where she was the 2nd best thing i saw (Pulp obvs).  The setlist is very heavy on the new album which is perfect because its landed so well,  There was no slow build up it was full on from the start every track got big reception,  but yet still managed to find higher gears for the closing The Deep Blue OK, proceeding the encore of I Do This All The Time and Focus Is Power.   Seems pretty obvious in retrospect that Manchester Academy all be it doing 3 nights was to smaller venue and il say the same about the park sub headline slot 

 

Clearly a bigger artist than the bookers thought she was - certainly nailing it this year.

Saw the Busted vs McFly tour over the weekend at Leeds Arena, the absence of 1/3rd of Busted was felt, but otherwise genuinely shocked how much fun I had, one of the best gigs I've been to all year. You forget how many 2000s hits they have between them, so it was just nonstop throwback tunes. Partner described it as an "elaborate year 6 disco," and that was spot on (and very much meant as a compliment). I was also seriously impressed with the actual staging. Really added some spectacle to the gig with the rotating lighting rig, loads of pyro, sparkler walls and confetti cannons. Also enjoyed that the front standing pit was seemingly massively undersold (the gig was sold out, so wasn't a ticket sales issue). We had tons of room and could go bar/toilet without fuss and still had an incredible view even from the back of standing. Loved it. 9/10.

Gathering of the Angels - David Lynch festival over the weekend (what used to be the Twin Peaks UK festival).

 

absolutely wonderful event, and lovely people.

 

lots of events going on, film screenings, talks, Q&A sessions etc..

 

had the pleasure of meeting the wonderful Michael Horse (Deputy Hawk).

 

music wise there was Chrystabell (previously saw her at an earlier edition of the festival too) who is just fantastic, and last night there were little sets from Tim Burgess and DJ Yoda (both of whom are thoroughly nice chaps).

Not a "gig" I guess but John Lydon "I Could be Wrong, I Could be Right" in Dublin.

 

A mix of brutal honesty, more than a hint of old man pub bore with a touch of sanctimony, admirable perseverance in the face of heartbreaking loss, a few laughs and then him calling people cúnts and kicking them out for heckling.

Beta Band - outstandingly good! 

 

Really hope they carry on after this tour and write some new stuff. Maclean hasn't ruled this out, according to an article on a Scottish website.

 

Would be fantastic to see them at some festivals next year.

Frank Turner Lost Evenings VIII in Edinburgh 4 night’s festival at the weekend
Night 1 - Frank and Sleeping Souls - B sides and rarities, with support from Haiver

Night 2 - Frank and Matt Nasir Acoustic set with support from Nina Nesbit

Night 3 - Frank Turner and sleeping souls- positive songs for negative people album with support from Skinny Lister

Night 4 - Frank Turner and Sleeping Souls- the hits with support from Arab Strap. 
lots of other bands on second stage which we never got around to catching. 

Night 4 and Night 2 were my favourites. Came home with nasty cold though and sore feet. Next years Lost Evenings controversially in Dallas, Texas!

Good description of him i think. He's somehow fascinating and boring, charismatic and irascible all at the same time - sod working with him, it must be ridiculous!
