Live gigs - Who you've seen were they good, bad etc.

What do you guys mean by "format " @NorthernSoul52 ?  Not picking an argument, am genuinely curious/interested.  They have become absolutely huge as a live act, to the point I would consider going along for the spectacle/show, and the handful of songs I like and which I'm pretty sure they'd play...must be loads like me in same position.

They’re definitely at the peak of big stadium shows, and like you said, a lot of people go for the spectacle as much as the music. But is that kind of setup really sustainable in another 5 to 10 years? The Music of the Spheres tour in 2025 didn’t feel too different from when I saw them in 2023, still amazing, but I’m not sure I’d rush to see the same format again.

 

I think their next move might be to go smaller, more intimate gigs, acoustic sets, or something a bit more stripped back. Didn’t Chris mention that the next album might be a musical?

 

On the other hand, they could double down on the tech, more AR or VR elements, global livestreams, or something completely wild. Honestly, I wouldn’t put it past them to end up playing in space at this rate, "live from the ISS"!

 

Either way, they’ve always known how to switch things up when it starts to feel like they’ve done it all, so I wouldn’t be surprised if the next era feels totally different again.

Dogs D'Amour at Buckley Tivoli at the weekend.

 

A band I watched countless times in my youth, from dingy clubs up to venues a little bigger that most academies are now. They even started cropping up on Top of The Pops on a quite regular basis. Then the downward spiral started, but they (well, main man Tyla) are still going and can still put on a good show. So many great tunes, lovely to hear them again after many years.

Beta Band round 2 for me on Saturday in Manchester. Thought sound quality was better than Leeds week before but an inordinate amount of chatterers and drunk folk took the shine off an otherwise superb gig b

Yep tons of fun at Brixton, I thought some of the album tracks might drag but the likes of Moonshine and Find the Colour went down very well.

 

On another note, agree on Sigur Ros, by far the best I've ever seen them. Ara Batur has been on the bucket list since 2008. However I think it was Untitled 3 that stole the show for me.

Lady gaga last night in Manchester. Second time at the venue and we were in the "cheap" seats to the side and back row but what an amazing show. We went for my partner who loves her and she was having the best time. I enjoyed enough of it as someone who knows most of the songs and can see she was having the best  time. Dancers and band spot on as well. 

The venue really is great sound both times I have been has been spot on parking wasn't an issue at all. Queue to get in flowed pretty well. 

 

 

Back to Manchester on Saturday for the rugby league final with the Pigeon detectives playing before hand. A little bit different ha

Ash tonight instore at Banquet and then at Circuit were AMAZING! New songs sounding brilliant (even better live than on the album - Ad Astra a highlight live) and so good to hear some of the old tracks too. Feel very lucky to have been there!

Red Rum Club at Electric Brixton last night. The boys just keep getting better and better. Seen them a lot over the past couple of years and it was nice to hear a lot of the newer tracks live. I say it every time I see them - I don't understand why they aren't absolutely massive!

They are SO good live. December will be my 12th time seeing them since 2019, and it's always brilliant. The venues seem to be creeping up in size, but slowly.

 

I'm not sure what they need now to push them up a notch so they become as big in the rest of the country as they are in Liverpool. A radio hit (if they're still any thing)? A slot on Jools? A daytime Glastonbury slot with a song on the highlights?

Last minute night out to see The Kooks at Newcastle arena with a bunch of friends. Really didn't think I'd be missing much seeing them again after seeing them at TRNSMT in the summer but it was a very fun time all things considered! Luke is a very charming frontman and definitely knows how to get a crowd in good spirits - Sofa Song and She Moves In Her Own Way had the whole place singing along within the first 20 minutes and See Me Now was very touching and Luke seemed very moved. There was a run of songs before the encore where the energy definitely dropped because of a run of deeper cuts back to back (Shine On and You Don't Love Me helped raise it) but Ooh La and Naive as the encore is a guaranteed winner. Half the crowd was on shoulders for the latter! 

 

The K's as support were also very enjoyable - from some moments, if you didn't have a clue you'd think they were the headline act based on how massive the energy was from the crowd for their full set. I saw more people wearing K's shirts than Kooks shirts around Newcastle yesterday. While I'm not the most familiar with their music, the band had great energy and balanced out the upbeat moshing songs with the ballads really well - even I can admit Sarajevo is a brilliant closer to get the crowd going wild. Have a feeling these lads are only going up from here and I wouldn't be shocked to see them upgrade to arenas in the next few years.

First visit tonight to the Bristol Beacon to watch Rochford and Level 42. Can’t wait to see my first live act at a venue I’ve heard so many great things about.

Dutty Moonshine Big Band at La Belle Angele in Edinburgh last night. Supported by all female scottish band The Laurettes. Seen Dutty a couple of times previously (both times at the excellent Lindisfarne festival) and thoroughly enjoyed them. Was nice to see them in a small venue and they absolutely smashed it. If they're on the line up of a festival you're at next year, well worth checking out. Support were good fun as well.

The K’s are great live and can see them getting even bigger. Saw them early at Woodsies and again at Roundhouse

Panic Shack really good fun at Shiny New Model festival in Cambridge, recommend getting a ticket for their tour if you can!

Architects last night in Manchester, superb. As energetic as expected and didn’t disappoint. Read a lot on here about them stagnating and taking a backwards step following the 2022 arena tour then supporting Biffy the same year but it felt like they really earned a near full Co-op Live last night. Gig of the year so far for me out of 80-odd sets.

Sunday Night - Birmingham Utilita

Parkway Drive, Thy Art Is Murder and Amity Affliction. 

Incredible set from Parkway Drive on their 20 year anniversary tour. Setlist encompassing nearly every album over that time and pyrotechnics to give Rammstein a run for their money! Right up there in my top ten, maybe even top five sets I've ever seen. Amazing atmosphere, some great circle pits and lots of fun had in a fantastic crowd. 

Thy Art is Murder as main support wasn't really my thing, but Amity Affliction to open up the night were brilliant. Felt personally, these should have been main support and thought they were pretty tight given the changes over the last year or so. New clean vocalist was very good. Not the same obviously, but still worth seeing. 

 

Friday Night - Oxford Academy

The Enemy, The Bracknall, Arthur and the Invincibles. 

A right throwback to my mid-20's from The Enemy, capturing a lot of tunes that brought memories of summer festivals with mates, midweek drinking, single living and tunes banging out of the Citroen Saxo! 😄

Fantastic support from The Bracknall which have become a real favourite of mine over the last 3 years or so and have now seen them around 14 or 15 times and got to know them quite well through seeing them so many times. Great lads and always time for a natter and beer at gigs. Check them out if you're into Oasis/Kasabian and looking for something in a similar style. AATI were okay as an opener. Again, not really my thing, but entertaining for half hour none-the-less. 

 

Off to see Biffy Clyro unplugged twice this week in Oxford and Bristol.

Inhaler and The Snuts at Liverpool Arena last night.

 

There on a freebie, which normally means they've struggled to sell tickets, but it was pretty full to be fair, I had no idea Inhaler were big enough to do arena gigs.

 

The Snuts were great, always an enjoyable live act, though they are pretty heavy on the backing tracks. 

 

I've been listening to Inhaler all week, but nothing has really stuck. The similarities to his dad's voice just make me want to put on an old U2 album.

 

It was enjoyable enough, I may catch them if on at a festival but wouldn't shell out any cash. Their fans though loved it, the atmosphere was great and everyone was really up for it.

they're a band i've always kind of quite fancied seeing, but just never gotten around to it.

 

managed to blag a ticket for the show on Saturday, and i have to say.. they were truly fantastic!

 

really wonderful evening.

Well The Pigeon Detectives certainly surprised me. Played 5 songs. I ended up knowing them all (I think it has something to do with I was around during the indie landfill era) but they got the occasion and was good fun. Great energy for something they really could have just phoned in

Great gig. Albeit the first half - upbeat bluegrass - better than the 2nd set which had some straight up country.

Saw Richard Hawley on WSM pier on Friday night. 
Odd venue. They literally moved all the arcade stuff out of the way and put a stage up. Bar didn’t cope, loos were inadequate and there was a crowd blockage at the entrance. Shame. 
 

The music though? Absolutely perfect. What a guy.
