Live gigs - Who you've seen were they good, bad etc.

Felt like a proud parent thinking back to their amazing Glasto 2015 sets on William's Green and the Park on the release week for MLIC.

 

Took them longer than expected to get there after the 2014/15 hype but glad they did.

Interesting - one of the songs I thought had a very good reaction was How Can I Make It OK, while Safe From Heartbreak, which is a song that isn't necessarily my favourite on record, sounded rather pleasant as well.

Final gig of the year last night - Stereophonics at Newcastle arena. First time seeing them and had a really terrific time! Kelly Jones is a very entertaining frontman and knew how to keep the energy up and the crowd engaged, even the newer songs had a good reception. His story about starting out with Stuart Cable was very touching and funny as well. Have a Nice Day, Maybe Tomorrow, The Bartender and the Thief, C’est La Vie and Dakota the standouts of a great final gig!

Been to so many gigs recently, don't even know where to start. Manchester has had A LOT on, particularly in November.

 

Heading to Amsterdam for BRMC tomorrow, then onto Paris for round two and back for the third helping at the Academy here on Friday.

 

Been a long wait, giddy.

Final gig of the year*.   Same act as my first gig of the year.  the incredible Heartworms very obviously gone up another couple of gears - Set List has been rejigged since the 1st gig -  With Just Ask To Dance & Jacked that came at the start of the other gig now firmly part of the big ending.  Being in a double capacity venue to last time with a bigger stage gave Jojo the chance to move and dance around in her own unique style.  The performance is now more polished, it really is a work of art.   An hour and a half set for an artist with only one album breezed by as Big extended intro's and outros featured heavily as well as the surprise inclusion of a cover of Bob Dylan's masters of war. 

 

Still obviously a very small act but very much one who has made an impact on the gigging community and the words everyone uses - She is an extremely talented performer. Very excited to see what is next for her.

Just been to see Heartworms at Scala in London. Amazing show, lead singer Jojo Orme has an incredible voice.

I thought this was more of a ‘I a saw this band this week sort of conversation’ and then there was a ‘year of gigs round up’ on another chat, but fair enough.

Wolf Alice at the hydro on Sunday. Incredible, best I’ve ever seen them. Their star is certainly on the rise.

Bill Ryder-Jones at Liverpool Grand Central last night. Beautiful stuff, with tremendous between song chat as he graduated more pissed as the night went on.

Went to Blackpool for The Wombats and The Snuts on Thursday night at the Empress Ballroom. What a venue.

 

The gig was excellent but the Empress Ballroom is an amazing place. Each room had more character than the last. £7 a pint not ridiculous by any means these days either.

 

Superb gig to end the year.

Had the most wonderful week watching BRMC three times in three countries.

 

A friend met Peter Friday night and he put us on the list for Leeds last night - it was a step too far for both of us, unfortunately. Not getting any younger. Exhausted.

 

They are still absolutely phenomenal. I imagine a return to the farm after all these years for them wouldn't happen now, unless they came back with a new stomping record.

 

They also covered I Am The Resurrection on Friday, in a nod to Mani. Beautiful.

So that venue really surprised me in terms of sound quality when I went. Facilities like toilets, not so good!!

Saw The Last Dinner Party on Tuesday at Circuit in Kingston, second time I’ve seen them play their new album there - and this time was even better as by now the crowd was singing along to every song. Great atmosphere but super special for me as I took my 9 year old along - her first gig. She absolutely loved it and is already planning who we’ll see together next. Hooked!

So a gig double header for me this past weekend

 

Friday was Stereophonics at the Co-op, which as a venue continues to impress me hugely. We got AMP club as the cost was quite similar to a normal ticket. That had us on the second tier, back row, and pretty much dead on looking at the stage. 

 

Sound was immense, like some of the best I've ever heard at a gig. Great stage and light setup and the setlist was pretty much all hits, a couple from the new album and a couple of proper rarities (Rewind for the first time in 20 years for me - one of my favourites, and 100mph which is a random addition but sounded great). I've seen them over 25 times including festival sets but that was up there with the best.

 

And last night it was The Royston Club in Liverpool. I've waited a while to see them in their own gig and I can't overstate how devoted their audience is. I love the new album, it only came out in August and everyone knew every word to every song. Loads of people had band tees on, way more than you usually see and there was just a generally excitable and friendly atmosphere. The band sounded incredible.

 

They're honestly going to be huge I think, and that's definitely the last time I'll get to see them in a venue as small as Mountford Hall. A real movement is growing behind that band and I'm so happy I got to see them at this point.

Last gig of the year for me last night, Red Rum Club at Liverpool Olympia. 12th time seeing them now so you'd think I'd maybe start to get a little bored of them, but they always deliver and the stuff from the latest album sounded great.

Maybe 400 people there. Summoning the spirit of Mark Lanegan. 

 

And we bumped into The Edge a couple of times.

I went to the leeds gig. Loved it. 9th time seeing them and still as good as ever. Played Stop which was a total surprise looking at previous setlists. The crowd were generally behaved during most of the howl songs but at some point Robert told someone to "Shut the F*** up" 

The heavier stuff just epic. Hope they don't take as long to tour again.

I went to the late show, unbelievably good! Didn't bother with Brixton as I really didn't like the first album so this was the perfect setlist for me.

 

I thought they'd be fun but they absolutely bolted beyond my expectations.
