Yeah that’s true, especially with how things were at the start of January we needed to be very careful and the forecasts probably reflected that.

Houston, we have a problem:

US health officials recommend an immediate halt to Johnson & Johnson vaccine administration. Six patients between the ages of 18 and 48 developed blood clots within two weeks of being vaccinated, the New York Times reports.

Almost seven million people in the United States have received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

It might sound bad but it’s precautionary whilst they look into the issue with blood clots. Hopefully they’ll find nothing wrong and they can resume using J&J again soon.

I'm so baffled by the continued pausing of vaccines. 6 in 7 million is an utterly irrelevant amount. If you vaccinated the entire world you would only have 6681 cases. The chances of blood clots with contraceptive is 9 out 10000 I read. 

All this is doing is creating vaccine hesitancy which will kill more lives.

Especially in the US which has... issues with lockdown compliance

Could be more of a general problem with the vector vaccines, the J&J quite similar to the AZ one. At least the reason seems to be solved: an international science team with some vienna specialists on blood clotting found out that the side effects are similar to a heparin therapy and the vaccination can have the result of a lack of platelets. So, after all, it seems to be a rather rare phenomenon.

That is something the UK scientists at the Downing Street briefings have got spot on this year I think. A very balanced, risk based approach rather than knee jerk reactions to pausing vaccines. The decision to use different vaccines for the under 30s due to clot risk, based on well analysed and explained case data has helped massively with public confidence in the vaccines here. The same cant be said by idiots like Macron who shouts his mouth off on something he clearly knows nothing about. Its a lesson I think Boris has learnt since the start of January lockdown (unfortunately not before that), he has stopped shouting his mouth off and seems to be following the scientific advice/data now

Our scientists seem to be making the right decisions now, based on the best available data, and the UK public I think largely support it. Vaccine hesitancy, including against the AZ vaccine, is really not a major issue here and hopefully we will see the benefits of that over the next few months as we have the past few weeks. Delaying the second dose and delaying each step for the releasing of lockdown are other examples where it seems we are getting it right

Nicola Sturgeon has brought forward relaxations to travel and outdoors meetings, saying Covid is “in retreat” in Scotland.

Announcing the changes which she said had been made with boosting mental health and wellbeing in mind, she said that from this Friday:

  • People will be all able to travel anywhere within Scotland for the purposes of outdoor socialising and exercise.
  • Up to six adults from up to six households can meet outdoors.
  • Island communities will align with rest of country so that travel to and from the islands can operate more normally.

She confirmed that, in a fortnight’s time from 26 April, there will be a significant relaxation, with shops fully reopening, pubs, cafes and restaurants opening fully outdoors with limited hospitality opening indoors, which she pointed out would be three weeks before England.

As of 26 April, travel restrictions to and from England and Wales will also be lifted – although Sturgeon added that it may be possible in future to re-introduce temporary travel restrictions.

Sturgeon also said people should be able to meet indoors again from the middle of May, albeit in limited numbers, and that she hoped to see a return to even greater normality, including hugging family and friends, by the summer.

I don't get it to be honest.  Wouldn't that mean there are more doses available for Europe, who can make up their own mind on whether clots are worth the risk.
