In all honesty I think that would be the best time to do it, shops and restaraunts are naturally quieter at that time of year so it hopefully won't effect businesses too much, I do however think they won't strictly call it a lockdown, they'll just put everywhere in tier 4 or refer to it as tightened restrictions

They have to really do something, in a way they should probably do it now. But they won’t be doing that, so next week or Jan is the next best thing. We need to try to get on top of the virus now before things get much worse!

I think many people will be less inclined to fully support another lockdown until schools are closed again too.
Expecting people to sacrifice everything for a couple of months is one thing, but whilst schools remain open you still have millions of kids passing this on, and then back home to parents etc.
If they remain open, it’s just not going to have the desired effects that the lockdown is aiming for.

The issue is children need school, its absolutely essential for them. I work in one and it was really worrying to see how far the children had fallen since March with their ability when they returned in September. The most reasonable compromise I can think of is putting high schools to virtual learning (and cancelling GCSE/A Levels) and allowing Primary/Infant schools to open in some capacity

My appointment is 6th Jan (with the Barts team for any Londoners interested) - we should swap notes once we've had our first shots! Fingers crossed for the real deal...

I am on the 7th .........yep let’s compare notes, see who first grows the extra fingers  or gets an instruction from Bill Gates 🙄

A despicable collection of chancers and spivs.

https://www.gov.uk/government/ministers

Every single person listed on that website is either a complete non-entity, or actively fucking awful, and they're somehow, nominally at least, in charge of the country.

Great job everybody!

Oh I completely understand - I have a little one myself (albeit in nursery) and a number of younger family members all in school and can see first hard how vital they are, and the devastating impacts more closures would do.
I think closing them should be an absolute last resort - but I just don’t see how we can effectively contain a virus, whilst having such large numbers of pupils across every area of the country attending schools every day.
Your suggestion makes a lot of sense and would be a sensible compromise, which is why it probably won’t happen.

Well done mate. I signed up on the government website some time ago but I don't live anywhere near any of the test centres which is why I assume I haven't been called.

I signed up to the government one and the J&J one that @incident posted a while back but didn’t hear anything despite living close to a centre.

Cheers. Have you tried the J&J specific trial link? They seem pretty keen for volunteers and our  ‘demographic’ unsurprisingly is of interest 😊

This year has felt unbelievably abnormal. Normal life feels so far away right now. I had it in my mind that 2021 would see us moving back to normality but things just keep getting weirder and weirder.

There is still a part of me that goes towards it not going back to how it was. The goalposts keep moving and I fully expect some more "surprises" that prevent full lifting of lockdowns for some time to come.

I think this is the thing - trying to allow them back to fully normal all winter while pretending they don't pass this particular virus on (when they do pass all others on) was always crazy.

I feel for the vulnerable parents who have to gamble with their lives daily to send their kids to school under the threat of fines if they don't.

Yes I just got a call from them and have agreed to join after Christmas, and they said exactly this. If offered a vaccination they will unblind me and provide advice as to what is safe to do. The rapidness of the response suggests they are keen for volunteers. Go for it you know it makes sense!

for those near Manchester the trial centre is part of the MRI.

might do this too...

I can see that happening, but we'll see. They might just have year 11s and 13s going into school/college because Williamson is desperate to have GCSEs still go ahead.

I think Williamson will be replaced in the new year, and maybe they'll get someone in who actually cares.

I have a query for all you folk signing up for trials. You get the jab? Your then subject to the same rules as the rest of us, is it the vaccine working? Or is it restrictions working?

I think the decision in schools will actually be based on the science. If this new variant is actually more transmissible or worse for kids they will close the schools.

    • Another one from Sheffield DocFest this weekend, Earth Wind & Fire docu, directed by Questlove. Sensational archive footage, contributions from band members, family, plus a lot of very big fans (Stevie, Lionel, Flea, the Obamas) and a warts n all assessment of the genius / flawed human being that was Maurice White. Also, I never realised he started out as a jazz drummer with Ramsay Lewis. Well worth a watch.
