Aye, and let's face it, that whole "Christmas is cancelled" thing has got everyone's backs up.

Its amazed me during covid that, despite continuing to vote Tory after all the heinous shit they've done, it was Cummings driving to Durham that really pissed off some voters (including my Dad and step Mum). This Christmas thing is another good example. Sure, it's shite, but they have objectively done far far worse things over the years!

I’ve said it before but the electorate in this country so take a long time to fully turn against a governing party. It took years to turn against the Tories last time round eventually after the poll tax was when it happened. Then with Labour it happened after years as Brown took too long to call an election and the crash happened. Brexit is the outlier in all of this but even then it’s not till we see the small things that really impact people like you’ve listed when an impact is made. I think people like your Mum and Dad are a really good example of voters turning against the Tories.

its not the tories getting blamed for it though, its the government, I imagine most tory voters would just turn around and say yeah but can you imagine if it was labour.

Diane Abbot is trending on twitter for no reason other than people not liking her, there's no last straw that'll see these people vote Labour any time soon.

Mildly off topic, but it really gets my goat how many of the same people who try and play the race card in response to any criticism of Priti Patel also use mocking Diane Abbott as some weird form of recreational activity

Yikes. Shouldn't we be doing a precautionary national lockdown now while we fathom out if this is due to the new strain or not, rather than wait for the new strain to spread to all areas (by which point we're f'ed!)

Dianne Abbot gets so much unjustified hate, when she seems like a really good MP and person. It’s horrible some of the stuff you see her get online.

I'll defend Diane Abbott more than most, but do admit she is a little gaff prone, and absolutely despise Priti Patel, but that's not the point I'm making.

I just find there to be a certain hypocrisy in trying to say that any criticism of a female asian MP is solely due to race and/or gender and then turn around and endlessly throw jibes at another female, ethnic minority MP.

Not that I’m a fan of either, both get far more shit for their actions than a white old Etonian would- and that’s gendered as much as it is racial.

100% this! Although it is also racial as well. If you do the job of a straight white rich man you are expected to be a million times better than them.

Case in point can you imagine either a black, asian or female of Donald Trump or Boris Johnson's character even being able to get elected??

Diane Abbott is no less gaffe prone than many Tory MPs but at least she cares about people other then herself and has principles.

Priti Patel is evil personified, as well as incompetent and thick to boot.

Bit of a false argument. If a member state persistently stopped travel from another member state outside of the pandemic, then there would sanctions from the EU. It's not like the UK could have closed its borders to certain member states whilst being in the EU

No arguments here- my point was more that it was both factors which does compound the issue.

Could level the exact same accusations at (for example) Dominic Raab, yet he never seems to get the same level of vitriol Patel does.

I don’t understand why he’d embellish it to use as political cover to cancel Christmas. If the new strain isn’t actually more transmissible then why would he want to cancel Christmas?

Because the tories have lost control of the virus by letting people in London get shitfaced eating tapas.

It's obviously subjective but I think Patel is by a country mile worse than Raab. She's also so damn pleased with herself at all times whereas Raab sometimes has the decency to look out of his depth.

I mean, she wanted the death penalty back FFS.

(post script: this doesn't mean I don't think Raab is a dickhead)

What sanctions?  Couldn't the UK have closed its borders if it wanted to?  The EU Commission has recommended, not ordered.

Happy to go on the record and say right now that I think Dominic Raab is a thick twat.
