They have to really do something, in a way they should probably do it now. But they won’t be doing that, so next week or Jan is the next best thing. We need to try to get on top of the virus now before things get much worse!

Expecting people to sacrifice everything for a couple of months is one thing, but whilst schools remain open you still have millions of kids passing this on, and then back home to parents etc.

The issue is children need school, its absolutely essential for them. I work in one and it was really worrying to see how far the children had fallen since March with their ability when they returned in September. The most reasonable compromise I can think of is putting high schools to virtual learning (and cancelling GCSE/A Levels) and allowing Primary/Infant schools to open in some capacity

Oh I completely understand - I have a little one myself (albeit in nursery) and a number of younger family members all in school and can see first hard how vital they are, and the devastating impacts more closures would do.
I think closing them should be an absolute last resort - but I just don’t see how we can effectively contain a virus, whilst having such large numbers of pupils across every area of the country attending schools every day. 
Your suggestion makes a lot of sense and would be a sensible compromise, which is why it probably won’t happen.

I signed up to the government one and the J&J one that @incident posted a while back but didn’t hear anything despite living close to a centre.

I think this is the thing - trying to allow them back to fully normal all winter while pretending they don't pass this particular virus on (when they do pass all others on) was always crazy.

I feel for the vulnerable parents who have to gamble with their lives daily to send their kids to school under the threat of fines if they don't.

I can see that happening, but we'll see. They might just have year 11s and 13s going into school/college because Williamson is desperate to have GCSEs still go ahead.

I think Williamson will be replaced in the new year, and maybe they'll get someone in who actually cares.

THey test blood i believe and can tell if there was elevated anitbody levels

I think the decision in schools will actually be based on the science. If this new variant is actually more transmissible or worse for kids they will close the schools.
