2007 and 2009.

Feels longer. Still over a decade ago and the super bowl is a bit different now.

When did the Janet Jackson issue happen? I know that after that they were very careful with what they allowed popstars to do. Looking back at how they dealt with it, it’s actually awful how they blamed Janet for something that Justin actually did.

That was '04.

Yes, the blaming of the black woman, rather than the white man for something that was obviously planned and choreographed by everyone involved was disgusting.

I don’t think it was planned, I think Janet was the victim of a move that she had no idea about and then blamed for what would obviously happen if you try hard to rip a woman’s bra off.

I think you have to mime the halftime show. I did read this somewhere.

Pretty sure Gaga mentioned (in her doc maybe?) that she trained a lot so that she could do all the dancing for her super bowl gig and still be able to sing without breathing too heavily

I think it’s not an authoritative “you must mime” but they prefer it. It’s live TV and they want it to be absolutely perfect with lots of choreography and stage production.

Of course it was planned. It was part of the routine. Jackson was wearing nipple jewelry and just prior to the incident, Timberlake sang: "I'm gonna have you naked by the end of this song"....

I think the controversy caught them off guard and they had to walk back the incident afterwards, and try and convince  the world it was an error.

Interesting that. How awful is it that it was Janet that got the worst of it. They say it pretty much killed her career for a few years while Justin’s soared.

If someone, anyone, had physically ripped Janet Jackson's tit out onstage without prior agreement, something tells me that there might have been some fallout on said perpetrator beyond a slapped wrist for pre-watershed nudity.

Yes. I think the fact she had to issue an apology to the world was the worst part.

I'm not sure how badly it hit her career, but there was certainly some result, as the superbowl is the biggest gig of the year and a major boost to any artist that plays it, and as you say JT certainly benefited from it.

I must be missing something about Physical.

Previously the only Dua song I really loved was Be The One, but I've been listening to Don't Start Now non stop. Physical just hasn't grabbed me yet.

I totally agree. Now I am a fan of Dua and have taken a keen interest since Be The One won me over. Yet Physical is imo a pretty average tune. There is nothinv at all that makes it stand out. It is just pop by numbers and will have been totally forgot about within 2 months.

I do like it, but I think it stands out at the moment because everything's a bit dull and dreary and January outside, and this slice of 80s callback pop lands and cheers everyone up a bit.  Just seems to stand out a bit at the moment to my mind.

You're not the only one. Sounds like a poor man's Halsey to me.

Not sure you've really heard much Halsey if that's so? ... it's definitely a nod to many things wouldn't say her. Taylor will be doing a great Halsey impression Sunday night with Miss Americana. Ladyhawke is a great shout for inspo for Physical though.
