Does anyone know how much Hop Farm paid?

they must've pissed away a LOT of money that year - The Eagles and Prince! no wonder they had to downscale significantly the following year

Theres nothing to say they've even spoken a word to the purple one or his people tbf thats a conclusion some people are jumping to.

Some acts understand they have to accept less, some wont.

aye it's all assumptions, but it definitely seems to point to it being him (unless they were after somebody like Madonna who's also fucked them around)

As an aside its a shame this thread has been mostly about headliners even though we know we arent getting it this week. I for one am happy to be (finally?) getting that first line up and the headliner is of little relevance to me, as someone who saw blur in 09 only the mac would appeal or i'll be elsewhere

I still can't believe that the people in charge of the festival leave it this late to finalise the headliners. So it seems there has been a pull out within the past week or so (likely to be Prince). Why don't they have a deadline of Christmas for example. If it's not all signed on the dotted line the move on to the next act.

It's the biggest and most famous festival in the world and any band/artist should be knocking on Eavis' door wanting to play. The festival shouldn't play second final to any ego maniacs and their demands.

Neil said that he had info that the headliners were already booked quite a while ago. either that was wrong (in which case last night's info could also be wrong?), or someone pulled out after signing up, which given that there'd be legal and financial implications for them doing so, would be unlikely without a good reason.

I am - and as I said, I find it hard to believe that artists can't play a one off Glastonbury gig for a reduced fee. If it's down to money with Prince (as I assume it must be) then they will never be able to pay him what he wants. In that case - thank you and move on.

Indeed, if they are ever going to pay over the odds for a headliner to do it, then pay The Eagles, not bloody Prince.

Why the assumption that any stumbling block with Prince would be all about money?

The man has spent years doing whatever he wants, regardless of money - in some cases such as the cancelled gig in Dublin it's cost him a huge amount.

Well if he plays at festivals which pay him large amounts of money .. But will not agree to play at a festival which will not give him a large amount of money - there is only one real assumption that can be made. I'm sure if Glastonbury offered him £2-3m to play, as other festivals have done in the past, he'd sign on the dotted line in a heartbeat. Edited by st dan

My point is..

The man came over here and played shows to 100 odd people making virtually no money, because he felt like it.

He cancelled a 80,000 capacity stadium show, costing himself about 2 million quid, because he felt like it.

If he wants to play somewhere, he will regardless of money. If he doesn't want to play somewhere, he won't regardless of money. Of course there'll be points in betweeen those 2 extremes, so money could be a factor in the case of him appearing at Glastonbury, but it could be one of a million other things such as whether it was raining when he woke up on a particular morning.

If that is the then, then assuming that they try for him every year (they must at least send the feelers out to his people) why do they persist in trying to book him? And risk leaving themselves in a situation like this.

If they pin their hopes on him playing and he might or he might not depending how he feels then it's time to move on. As mentioned, they managed to get The Rolling Stones to play, which is much more of a coup than Prince would ever be.

Having watched their full set for the umpteenth time earlier today, let's never forget this point. I doubt I'll ever see a night better than the Stones at Glastonbury.

yes, if it was the case, then i'm sure they would have stopped bothering quite a while ago.

it probably isn't the case though, and it's all a load of speculative bollocks on here that people are just making up, as seems to be the usual for talking abut Prince and what he allegedly does/has done.

Well firstly, we don't actually know that they do try to book him every year. Or even any year.

But in the event that your presumptions are correct - you ask why keep trying?

Surely the asnwer is pretty obvious - you mention the Stones, well reportedly (depending on what version you believe) GFL tried for years to book them, and one year it came off - and even then it wasn't certain until about 3 months before the festival. That decision could have gone another way and ended up with the Festival looking for a late replacement. But GFL kept asking, and eventually it came off.

U2 is another good example - I'm pretty confident (from a converaation I had with someone who worked closely with the band) that at one point U2 had agreed to headline the 2005 Festival, but pulled out. The festival kept asking, eventually it came off.

So why would they persist in trying to book Prince? Because maybe one day they'll succeed.

Did you not get there until Saturday then? You must have missed the emotionally charged masterpiece that was on the other stage the night before!

    • I've been attending Primavera every year since my first one in 2017 & it's always been my favourite week of the year, but I think things have changed.   Firstly, the site just feels too busy in this current set-up. I'm sure it was a lot easier back in 2017-19 to get between the stages & then a good spot for the next one, but now you increasingly have to sacrifice parts of a set or miss them out completely to plan for later on. I wish we still had the Bits area over the bridge to spread everyone out.   But the main issue is the talking, it's always been here but this year it's been relentless & I just can't tolerate it any more. It's at every stage, and everywhere from the front to the back, there is no escape. Not focusing on nationalities, but a major dynamic now seems to be groups of people who are only focusing on their own good time & aren't interested if this affects anyone else. It seems essential that all members of the group are together at the same time, so it's people making telephone calls, people on shoulders waving phone torches, people barging through. It's alright, I'm only trying to watch The Cure here.   I will have a year away to think about it. I thought might give up completely but yesterday was a bit of a classic day after two unenjoyable ones. Adding Olivia Rodrigo to Baxter Dury, Gelli Haha, The XX, Gorillaz & Kneecap shows how good it can be, but as with everything, it's always the people that have the biggest impact.
