Split opinions here. I'm pro Floyd on this one. One act would have stepped aside.

Thats different. One act (Kings of Leon) should have stepped aside or taken 2nd last on. Then they could have started the music earlier in the morning etc and had a full Floyd gig. But Glasto HQ telling KOL to fuck off is a no no.

It is sad though that the list of bands below all played on the Pyramid that day. And Pink Floyd couldn't get a gig!

Although it was a Waterless Pink Floyd. Pink Floyd lite.

Fuck me there is some unspeakable dross on that list.

Well if i was in Kings of Leon there is no way I'd have stepped aside. What an absurd suggestion.

I would have, out of respect for Pink Floyd and Richard Wright. They still could have been billed as headliners but played the slot before Floyd, who'd be billed as Special Guests.

Same goes for the other two headliners, but I am sure that I've heard from somewhere that it would have been KoL who'd make the step down.

You are sounding like an ass

Dying wishes as hogwash? FFS

No I think I'm being realistic. How am I an ass for questioning the legitimacy of someone wanting to do the festival when the band had been in a position to do so for the majority of the festival's lifespan, and for which they'd been asked a number of times? They have no right to be angry about it not coming together when they asked a month before the festival.

In all fairness, I think he was grieving over the death of his friend when he came out and openly criticised the festival. If he has done since, he hasn't really got a right to be pissy.

And I've have been insulted to be asked. Eavis was looking after his reputation as a booker. And mentioning the other bands playing is pretty irrelevant - it's not as if they were offering to play 3rd from the top or to play a secret set in Stonebridge. They were asking the festival to break all their agreements and install them as a last minute headliner.

It occasionally comes up that Eavis turned down RHCP one year, pretty much the same situation, the festival was approached once all the bands that size were already booked. Michael doesn't turn popular acts on a whim! Don't forget, this isn't a few mates coming round for a jam night, there will likely have been actual contracts in place. I think Michael was right to not get mired in all that. Obviously a tough call, but on balance I can see why he did it.

Would I have rather seen Pink Floyd that Kings of Leon? Of course, but I still think they made the right call.

I agree with you entirely.

Step down, not aside. They still get to play. And Im sure theyd have wanted to see the gig themselves!

Yeah i know they would have got to play still. How true is this Floyd thing? If say KOL said "well we'll step aside but in 2 years when we have a new album out we want the headline slot." That would have been a good solution.

Mind, that would have been grim because that was KOL's great dark period.

Well thats the question. Gilmour said "we" as in him and Rick, not Pink Floyd.

So maybe it was just a Gilmour gig with Rick on keys?

Either way Eavis seemed to have turned them down as 08 was the "appealing to the youth again" year. And Gilmour warbling away to tunes that his missus wrote for him won't get the kids in.

Indeed, I can't believe none of the 3 acts, even Jay Z wouldn't have seen it for what it was and been willing to step down a slot. Maybe even have got them a guest slot during Pink Flyod, said they could headline properly on their next album in a few years.

The publicity for the band doing that would have been unreal, at least worthy of dropping from the headline slot!

The thing is that the three headliners are supposed to be equal - Kings of Leon would have a right to ask why they were the ones that had to stand down instead of Jay-Z and The Verve. In 2008 I bet Kings of Leon were more popular and their albums sold better than Jay-Z's.

ME: "Pink Floyd reformation gig?

DG: "No, me, solo"

ME: "So no Roger?"

DG: "No"

ME: "But lots of Floyd stuff?"

DG: "Some, but mainly my solo stuff with a few MOR stinkers from Momentary Lapse and Division Bell thrown in"

ME: "Err.... sorry Dave going through a tunnel.........."

2008 is the only year I've missed since I started going to Glastonbury. Looking at that lineup I didn't miss much.

Unfortunately I'm with the festival on this one. Doesn't matter who it is, you can't just call the festival in early June looking for a headline slot!

BrrrBrrr...BrrrBrrr...

ME: Hello...Worthy Farm

JP: Hi Michael...Jimmy Page here....errrrmm me and the lads were wondering if you could fit us in on Sunday night this year....headline obviously....it's just that we reckon we could give it one last hurrah before we all give it up for good, and we reckoned the farm would be the place to do it? What d'ya reckon?

ME:........hmm.....sounds a great idea...it's just....

JP: Look Michael I know it's a difficult decision and you must have other bookings in place....but it's a once in lifetime offer...Isle of Wight are next on the list to call....tell you what we do it for a monkey and a few beers, can't say fairer eh?

ME:......mmmm....mmmm....it's very tempting Jimmy...but I'm going to have to pass....I've got Florence in that slot already and I know the punters are gagging to see her....sorry. how about I give you a call for 2016.....?

Click.....brrrrrrrrrr

ME: Jimmy....Jimmy....?

    • Considering how popular of a booking Scooter have been I think they'd go down well
    • I mean I think unless you are camped in a particular bit which apparently you just get no sleep i feel it would be better setup to travel in from a hotel each day and back. Ah there is so many downfalls to it for me, I think the Download main stage area is so much better and that's coming from me. If you're camped in green to go round all the time and out for lidl and even water is stupid!
    • Did you camp or go for a hotel? I looked into it briefly and seems easy enough to get back to Nuremberg.
