Speaking of cheese, anyone like Dick Cheese & Lounge Against the Machine?

I used to have a mate who was really into them, he was a strange individual, some might have gone as far as to say he was a w*nker, which wasn't a completely unfair statement. He was definitely not the sort of person you'd come across too often, was very good in small doses, but long periods of time in his company were quite trying.

I remember a few years ago Green Day were briefly rumoured and a few people were certain that if they played they'd be Other Stage headliners. Green Day, one of the biggest bands in the world (at the time anyway).

Imagine thinking that The Stone Roses, one of the most seminal bands ever, would play any slot besides Pyramid headliner.

That is word for word how anyone who knows me would describe me. I am fond of cheese.

Yes, The Stone Roses, a band bigger than most headliners they've ever had, will play the Other Stage.

Will, that's just not true.

Christ, I think that the hype and 'declared popularity' for the Roses is bigger now than when they were around properly. They have managed, somehow, to develop a disproportionate level of nostalgic notoriety for reasons beyond me. Were they popular at their initial zenith...well, yes, a bit. But then Second Coming was such a trial for the band, and so universally panned, that they faded pretty quickly , if not not obscurity, certainly out of the common consciousness.

They hold a single, OK, album in their canon. They retain a fervent, mostly UK-based, fanbase amongst, in the main from a single demographic. The mystique surrounding the band has piqued the interest of indie kids of the subsequent generation to a point where they are often considered legends. But are they?

And, moreover, are they really a band bigger than most headliners GF has ever had. REALLY?

A very brief discussion with Dr Google, looking anti-chronologically for reference has created the following little list, just from the last few years. The Stone Roses...bigger than:

U2

Bruce Springsteen

Muse

The Rolling Stones

Metallica

The Who

Paul McCartney

Oasis

R.E.M.

Coldplay

Radiohead

Blur

I could go on.

I'm not denying the place the Roses hold in the hearts of many British music fans. I'm not saying they wouldn't be an enormously popular announcement for GF2015. But let's keep things in perspective...?

Ben

    • I don’t know what was going on with SEE tickets for Phoebe Bridgers this morning.. I had a presale code, got into the sale after queuing for 15mins with the green bars of doom.. but no map to choose seats from, just categories like “aisle seat” and “reserved seat” and sometimes a drop down of the section, but you had no idea where in the section the seat was… then you clicked through and either got “no tickets available” or a captcha which just kept looping no matter how well you selected the thing it was asking you to identify.. then eventually it spat you out to another “not enough tickets available” message.. I went through that loop SO many times.. I was doing captchas endlessly.. it was totally borked.    in the end I went back to the email with the presale code in, it then directed me to ticketmaster rather than see, still for Manchester, and I could then see the tickets on the map .. get them in my basket etc ..but there was only upper tier left.. so going to try my luck on ticketmaster for the main sale.. SEE was total garbage!
