Avalon is dying

I quite like the mix of music that Avalon does these days and the screens are a good addition for the busy acts but it does seem to have lost a little character with no Avalon Cafe.

The gates just past Mavericks were solidly shut every time I thought about swinging by from the T&C fields. Was that the case all weekend?

Yeah, that caught me out! I actually didn't go to see an act there because of that. It didn't seem to be for any particular reason either

It was because those gates would have opened into what's now part of the Avalon backstage area.

Don't go there very often, but went this year to see Go! Team.  They were excellent and I had a great time.

I'm afraid as is often the case with discussions pining for what has been removed, I'm often too distracted to have noticed it in the first place 😉

Nah, I don't think we're thinking of the same gates. They were actually open once during the weekend, then they closed them again.

I went there for The Go Team and BabyQueen this year.. both were good fun, didn’t spend as much time in the Avalon inn as I’d like, there was just too much to do this year..

I spent far too much time in it. If I think about it, probably c. 12-14 hours. Most of them Friday night……

Plenty of stages in the Green Fields doing folky acoustic stuff.

i spent loads of time in the GFF area, loved it. unfortunately it was very very busy every night that i was there. I'm not sure the scale or infrastucture of GFF is ready to cope with even a fraction of the avalon field crowds

I did the same Sunday afternoon. And caught a bit of The Cat Empire after those two before wandering through the gate between the stage and the inn directly into the SEC.

I think they were open Wednesday / Thursday only? We went through and then couldn’t during the fri-sun

Probably true.

First time in 16 years of going I spent anytime there, The Inn on Thursday night and Go Team on Sunday afternoon.

Certainly seems to take up a lot of space for what is actually there.

Total guess but do the areas not get assigned a budget and tis up to them how to spend it? Perhaps the Avalon team leant more towards booking bigger names than developing the area.

It’s not the fact that it hasn’t been developed more that the area had an identity before but it’s all been stripped out to leave a barren field.
It might be by design so that the field can now hold more people

The marquee increased in size at some point recently (want to say 2022 but can’t recall) which meant less space for other stuff and less grass outside. Given that was due to peak demand I wouldn’t say it’s dying, just evolving. The helter skelter was fun and all, but you can’t make the field bigger, something has to give.
