I was right at the top for Elton and it barely thinned out at all. Certainly no more than happens at every headline set.

I also didn’t enjoy it much personally as I was too far back and feeling rough. But I’m not going to waste time coming up with loads of spurious reasons as to why my subjective take on his set is any more valid than anyone else’s.

Pretty much the same experience.

But that's going to be true of every single act, particularly at headline time. Folk will peel off for all sorts of reason, often entirely unrelated to what's happening onstage.

The Cure's 2019 headline set saw the crowd thin noticeably sometime about 1/3 to 1/2 through the set.  It was one for the ages, but there were still plenty of people who turned up to check out a few tunes, weren't feeling it and wandered off for alternative entertainment.  The Who, last time they played, saw a big dip in crowd size in the same way.  To be honest I wished I'd wandered off for better entertainment that night myself, but grimly stuck with it out of some sunk cost fallacy in my head that things would pick up.

I legged it about 75% of the way through Jungle this year knowing I could make it to catch the end of Dua while the paths were clear.  It wasn't because Jungle were bad, but more a bit of FOMO meaning I thought the crescendo of Dua's set would be worth catching and it was just a 3 minute run away.

Seems like 1975 are nailed on for the Friday. Maybe call me crazy but any chance we could see Olivia Rodrigo but a sub-headliner for Gaga?

I know OR is a huge star but she does only have 2 albums (both very short in length) so feels like she might need a 3rd to be a Pyramid headliner.

Elton chat has been a good laugh, there were genuinely several folk on here a few years ago claiming Elton would be a Legend though.  Embarrassing!  Would also pull up whoever said Eminem "used" Elton when Elton's stock was lower.  I don't recall this low stock period at all.  He has been in the charts relentlessly.  Justin Timberlake played him in a video around the same time as "Stan".  Elton's never had anything other than massive pull.  I first (grudgingly, cos I thought I was too cool) saw him in 2008 in Las Vegas and was instantly converted into being a huge fan...

She's headlining BST, and they often share headliners with Glastonbury

Gaga would be a considerable coup given her fees these days, but unless they've been forced to axe Olivia Rodrigo or The 1975, it just doesn't pan out on the info we've had so far.

Agreed.  Shaky throwing his toys from the cot was the opening, but I think his reconsideration to grace us with his presence has effectively kicked Ms Germanotta onto the wayside for this year at least.... 😢

I love OR and think she has enough in the tank to fill a headline set, but you make a very good point.

Gaga is a legend, and her 2009 set being what it was it would be a hell of a coup to book her as an artist with a special history with the festival.  It does feel like a chance missed if we never see her headline the festival to me.

Several years back, when his stock was a lot lower, it was a reasonable enough viewpoint.

Can confirm that I was calling for exactly that about 10 years back.

Be careful what you wish for 😂 (assume you meant Blur but thought it was funny)

Having watched the Boy Band programmes on the BBC recently, I wouldn't mind Blue appearing somewhere, I reckon it would be good fun!  Not headlining obviously though!

As someone who was in the sparsely populated field at Bestival 2013 and also in the roadblocked Pyramid field with 100K + others in 2023, I would say there has definitely been an increase or resurgence in his stock in those 10 years.

Bestival (Sunday Best) now bankrupt, didn't have millions to pay headliners then either.

Was an absolute hoot wasn’t it, bar the ferry on the way home.

Crowd seemed busy for me at Elton there?

Yeah  I went every year - Elton was a coup for them at the time and he was superb - crowd was busy but no more so than the other main headliners I’ve seen there.

Back there were very few acts doing more than a single stadium show in a city (and much cheaper!) - nothing like how it is now. Plus last chance hype for Elton with his countless o2 dates etc.

Not sure where else he played that year - just checked and it was Itunes fest and a Leeds arena date (random!).

Think a huge part is that last chance hype

Given Young's tantrum last 2 days before his U-turn, my guess is that the Eavis' first plan was to try and persuade him to change his mind. A project that succeeded, clearly.

The ferry back from Bestival was awful - I remember coming back and 'My Heart Will Go On' playing on a loop, a very rough sea and a dirty hangover.

Otherwise, great festival.

Raye being on the menu for the forthcoming festival season is a positive.  Would she be back in the UK in time for Glasto or is she touring north america at the time?

not sure where she would fit in at glasto 2025, they're obv trying to push her but a lot of the big slots have solid rumours attached to them

I can see Raye headlining in a shocking move. She’s blown up as of late and has large industry backing (the brits show felt pointless to watch as they just handed her everything). I saw her at Parklife and thought she was fantastic but can’t help that in a few years time she’ll be looked at similarly to the likes of Paloma Faith.

    • The weather we have had whee i am in the last week or so has been.....  All the weather types in random order, wildly changing hour by hour.  Yesterday we had some beautiful semi warm sunshine - and also torrential downpours...   In summary - inconsistent
    • Warmduscher at ATN a couple of years back wins that one for me (or Christy Moore at Feile 92!). It wasn’t cold or windy though, so less unpleasant than it might have been. Hopefully it’ll stay dry for Nick Cave tomorrow!
    • Yeah.   Revisit in 2 weeks, then 👀
