Live gigs - Who you've seen were they good, bad etc.

In terms of proxmity for where I am in West Yorkshire, it is the easiest venue for me to get to. But I can't say I've ever been too enamoured with it, and it likely comes down to the fact that a "capacity" show there always feels packt like sardines in a crushd tin box, to paraphrase.

Really good. Surprised they're down at venue sizes of that level, I must admit, but the new tunes slot seamlessly next to the old ones, and there was a few nice surprises.

 

A top-ten gig of the year for me, I'd be tempted to say, and I'm just over a dozen shy of a hundred for 2024.

the second edition of Roots on the Corner at Archives in Tottenham Hale last Friday.

 

it was a good session, but being totally honest it was not as good as last month (where Ras Muffet properly killed it).

 

RDK Hifi were fantastic - great selection and great sound, although i think they had some issues with the bins, still overall they were great.

 

Shere Khan was, unfortunately, a little disappointing - good selection, no complaints there, but the sound was not great - too much distortion - no idea if it was possible issues on the night, or if thats the way he always sounds??

 

still, it was a great night - its a really cool venue for these events, i hope they keep doing them there.

Amyl and the Sniffers last night in Birmingham were amazing. They played pretty much all of the new album and it went down really well. A lively crowd for a Sunday too. There looks to be big gaps in their schedule for next summer and the European festivals.

I've seen clips on YouTube of the Kasabian Birmingham NEC show and it sounded awesome. Made me wonder if I've been too hasty in writing them off having not really listened to them in years.

Yes, I think I decided they were done, and I saw them support LG at Knebworth and we were sort of listening, going to loo, getting drinks and it passed me by. Decided to see them last week at last notice, got decent priced tickets (£50) and it was really good. Stage show was really smart, a few sample intros using Sabbath, Beastie Boys and Faithless. Serge on a rising platform with laser beams from his hands etc. Band were very good with Rob Harvey making a difference and the trumpet player too. Reccomended.

If they're on the festival circuit next summer, I'd happily take them high up on the Park or maybe in a similar daytime slot on the Other that Soft Play occupied this year.

Saw them Saturday just gone at Rock City in Nottingham.  Fantastic setlist and "blistering" sums it up perfectly.  Even as a 50 year old I managed to stick it out in the pit for the whole gig, although I am quite bruised and struggling with headbang neck 3 days later.... #oldmanproblems

They were superb before LG at Knebworth. Watched them from the pit.

Obituary in London last night.

 

yeah, really rather good!

 

the sound for the support was terrible but this was sorted and Obituary sounded great. of course i would have loved to have heard more old stuff, but to be fair their new material is actually very good. we got a Chopped In Half / Turned Inside Out medley, and a great finale of Slowly We Rot.

 

Trevor is not a particularly great musician, but what he does have is one of the single greatest guitar tones of all time, and he sounded great.

 

John must be the Peter Pan of death metal - aside from something of a spare tyre he doesn't seem to age a day.. and he sounded fantastic... yeah ok, the vocal is processed to hell... but who cares, he was great!

 

no idea who the lead guitarist is these days, but he did an admirable job of channelling the classic Obituary / James Murphy lead sound.

 

one little criticism - if your set is only 40mins.. and you have decades of classic tunes... maybe don't waste 7 minutes of it just so John can have his dramatic stage entrance!   

 

its sort of terrifying to me to think that the first time i saw them was 33 years ago... it really feels like it was yesterday...

 

 

oh, also saw one of the dumbest things i have ever seen - some kid crowdsurfing and filming himself on his phone the whole way over and the whole way back round and back into the crowd... dude... just enjoy the show!

 

 

anyways, yeah great show 🙂

They're so groovy live - impossible not to move to. Saw em last year, and theyre at Bloodstock closing the festival on the second stage late slot, which is going to be a beautiful end to the week! I love a bit of Obituary 👍

Are you sure ‘groovy’ is the right choice of words?

Just had a very brief listen and they didn’t sound anything like funkadelic, to be honest they scared me and I ran away.
I knew a song called ‘chopped in half’ wouldn’t be my bag, now ‘Pappa’s got a brand new bag’ = groovy song.

Anyway just being silly- one person’s groove is another’s tripping hazard.

I’m now going to open my horizons and listen to the 1989 album ‘slowly we rot’ (I’m not really).

They’re quite different live to how they are on albums: it’s a sort of bass driven groove, a massive fat wide monolith that moves the crowd, it’s a doom stoner thing, it’s great! Slowly we rot is a banger, I got it as a kid and when you spend £11 on an album and that’s your month’s pocket money you squeeze every inch out of it you possibly can, and almost force yourself to love it dammit 😁  I didnt have to try too hard with that one, to be fair, them and cannibal corpse had me sorted for deathy things when I was about 14

Balaam And The Angel last night at The Garage, it's been years since I last saw them but still a top live outfit. They played quiet a few from The Greatest Story Ever Told (My Favourite) including Slow Down and She Knows back to back, pure bliss. Really need to make sure I don't leave it so long between gigs, however don't play London that often.

 

Just realised that most on here probably have no idea who Balaam are but the slightly more mature members may remember them.

 

It was a bit of a nostalgia trip for me as the first music scene I got in to was the lighter side of Goth, based around the The Mission, The Bolshoi, All About Eve, Rose of Avalanche, The Cult, The Damned, Balaam and of course The Cure.

Just seen France in Todmorden. At one point I actually got high using my ears. Never experienced anything quite like it. If that's drone then I'm fully invested.

Beans on Toast in Birkenhead last night, ably supported by Dillon Warneck. 

 

Exactly what you'd expect from Beans, always a good time, just him and Matt Millership accompanying him on piano.

 

Dillon is a singer songwriter from Nashville, some nice tunes, delivered with a country twang, his set included a great cover of You've Got A Friend In Me.

 

Disappointing number of talkers through both sets, not something I've experienced in that venue before.

I am slightly irritated with myself for missing out on Amyl & The Sniffers last Sunday in Brum, so I would love for them to make a Glasto appearance this year.  I would have gone if I hadn't already had tickets booked for UPSAHL on Monday who was  absolutely brilliant. Much smaller crowd than I was expecting, but absolutely into it.

 

Still relatively unknown over here, perhaps bigger stateside? Proper alt-pop/indie pop, right up my street. The set was 28 tracks over about 90 minutes. Staggering stamina and energy. Also great crowd interaction. Could go down a storm on Woodsies or perhaps Avalon, given how they were booking last year.

 

Ellie Dixon supporting was great too, would definitely go see a festival/headline set from here given the chance.

The Howl & The Hum in Leeds last night veered close to extraordinary at times. Obviously now a solo project, and the newer tunes don't quite have the emotional tenor on record, but the live band assembled to deliver them gave it some very E Street touches, which is basically a shortcut to make me like you.

I'd not heard of them before but I got interested when you said 'drone' so I hunted them out on spoifty.

I'm about quarter of the way through their one, 1hr+ live noisy drone track and I'm f**king smitten.
